Episode Quotes |

(Horace and Jasper are watching television)
Robin Lunch: Hello, hello! I’m Robin Lunch, and welcome back to The Lifestyles of the Rich and Fatuous!
Horace: Boy, I love this show! It proves how the rich is just like us!
Jasper: ‘Cept for the fact that they got money.
Horace: Yeah, but I bet there’s not one of ‘em can eat popcorn with his feet.
(Horace then proceeds to eat popcorn with his feet) | (Cruella is on the phone, trying to secure an investment for her blubber popsicles)
Cruella: Mr. Kim, you can’t desert me now! What am I going to do with twenty tons of whale blubber?
(Mr. Kim says something to Cruella that is unintelligible to the viewers)
Cruella: That’s not an appropriate response, Mr. Kim. | (Colonel is telling Lucky, Rolly, Cadpig and Spot a story about his past)
Lucky: Aw, come on, Colonel, get to the good stuff! Did you walk on the wing, or jump between the planes? You know, do something heroic?
Colonel: Now, Lucky, you cannot simply leap into a dangerous situation. You gotta think! Plan ahead! That’s the mark of a true hero.
Cadpig: Lucky prefers the jump out of a plane and see if gravity is on duty approach. | (Cruella is ringing Roger and Anita’s doorbell in the middle of the night)
Roger: Cruella?
Cruella: Rumpert, dear boy, did I wake you?
Roger: No, I had to get up to answer the door. Now, is there something you want, or did you drop by to remind me that Halloween is coming? | Horace, Jasper: I’ve been working on the railroad, all the livelong day!
(Horace falls out of the door that the Dalmatians had opened)
Jasper: I’ve been working on the railroad, just to pass the time a… (realizing Horace fell) Hey! Horace, what are you doing?
Horace: (holding on the train) About fifty miles an hour! | Cruella: Memo to myself: Valentine blubber pulp! Ah, that’s it! I’d copy to read: if you love her, give her blubber!
Horace busts through the ceiling, landing on her desk)
Cruella: What are you doing in here?
Horace: Uh, I thought you might want to yell at someone?
Cruella: Why yes! How very thoughtful of you. | Colonel: As we reach the mountain top, we have to cut loose our car from the train. If we time it right, we’ll roll down the slope to the Stiffle train station, and freedom.
Rolly: But, what if Cruella sees what we’re doing? How do we stop her from coming after us?
Colonel: Oh, I have a plan for that, too. Remember, battles aren’t won by impulsive behavior, but by exploring every option. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll go send an S.O.S. to the Barking Chain.
Cadpig: (frightened) Colonel, that all sounds great, but what if your plan fails? What if we can’t cut the car lose?
Colonel: Then I fear we’ll reach the end of the line, in more ways than one. | Lucky: We’re almost at the top of the mountain!
Cadpig: What are we gonna do!
Colonel: Save that question for a rainy day, Cadpig.
Cadpig: Ah, the umbrella!
Colonel: Precisely! Cadet Spot, we need a diversion!
Spot: Finally, a place for my lounge act, and me without my back-up band! Oh well.
(Spot proceeds to cluck a song while dancing on and around Cruella’s head) | (Horace and Jasper emerge from the wrecked train; black and smoldering)
Horace: Hey, now, that wasn’t so bad.
Jasper: ‘Cept for the broken bones.
(Horace and Jasper pass out on top of one another) | Cruella: Radcliff, Anita, we can all be rich! This railway car is worth a fortune!
Billy Fences: Actually, it’s not! I wanted a 1912 Kimbo railway car, this is a 1915 model; I already have one of those. Thanks anyway, and, woo-woo!
(Cruella stomps on the railway car in frustration, causing it to fall apart; she lands on the ground)
Cruella: Next time I’ll take a bus. |

Episode Goofs |
| |
Cruella’s wealth in this episode seems to be lower than what it is typically portrayed as throughout the course of the series. When Cruella’s business deal goes bad, she expresses that she’ll be in financial ruin over a loss of ten million dollars. However, Cruella has spent much more money than that throughout the course of the series, not even considering the money she had spent on her failed endeavor to steal the Dalmatians in the works the series was based off of. Forbes magazine had even placed Cruella De Vil in their top fifteen richest fictional characters of all time, so one would assume that Cruella De Vil wouldn’t be anywhere near financial ruin over a mere ten million dollars. |

Cultural References |
| |
Robin Lunch: Hello, hello; I’m Robin Lunch and welcome back to the Lifestyles of the Rich and Fatuous!
This is a reference to the real television series that debuted in 1984 that was hosted by Robin Leach, Lifestyles of the Rich and Fabulous, which involved the host documenting the extravagant lifestyles lived by celebrities. This reference takes place at the beginning of the episode, when Horace and Jasper are watching the program on television. | Robin Lunch: Our next guest is young Bill Fences, he made a fortune in computers!
This is a reference to Bill Gates, who created Microsoft in 1978, which later went on to revolutionize the role of computers in the world. Bill Gates went on to become one of the world’s richest men, due to the success of the Microsoft Corporation. This reference takes place towards the beginning of the episode, when the television program Horace and Jasper are watching shows a segment on the character in question. | Horace, Jasper: I’ve been working on the railroad, all the livelong day!
This is a reference to the American folk song that is believed to have been derived from an old Irish hymn. It has often been used in various media, though due to this, the tune is well known throughout the world. This reference takes place when the Dalmatians are attempting to sabotage the movement of the train, in which Horace and Jasper are seen singing the song. | Cruella: Radcliffe, Anita, we can all be rich!
This is a reference to the 1961 animated film entitled One Hundred and One Dalmatians, which is the work that the series was partly based on. In the animated film, which contained many of the characters used in the series, Roger and Anita’s last name was Radcliffe, but it was changed to Dearly for the sake of the series, since Dearly was used in the original novel by Dodie Smith. The reference is made towards the end of the episode, when Cruella De Vil confronts Roger and Anita about her plan to sell their railway car to make an easy fortune. |

Analysis |

Humans and Animals
Throughout this episode, Cruella takes notice of the fact that the Dalmatians are behaving abnormally. She first discovers them working together to try to unhitch Colonel’s railway car from the train, though later in the episode, she discovers Rolly was responsible for causing the train to change tracks, since he changed the railroad switch. At that scene, Cruella looks at Rolly and she expresses that the dogs couldn’t have done what they did to her on purpose, since they’re just dogs; this is because in the realm of 101 Dalmatians: The Series, despite the fact that all animals can communicate with one another and they’re quite intelligent, their gifts and abilities are unknown to humans. However, Cruella De Vil took notice of their human-like behavior in this episode, and the way they coordinated their efforts, though she convinced herself that it was all a coincidence and she didn’t delve further into the issue. | Viewer Safety
During the scene where Lucky, Rolly, Cadpig, Spot and Colonel are placing the bag over the top of the train’s smoke stack, Colonel looks towards the screen and reminds the viewers that they should never do this sort of thing at home. This is one of the few instances in the series where the characters went out of their way to ensure the safety of the viewers at home. Since the show’s target audience is children, who are more impressionable than other audiences, it can be safely assumed that the statement in this episode was included as a means of setting a good example, and to prevent any potential incidents involving the content of the episode. Similar statements occur in additional episodes of the series, typically when a dangerous stunt or act is being performed, though the instance in this episode was the first of its kind in the series. |
