Episode Notes

In the episode ‘The Dogs Of De Vil’, it is revealed that the Dearlys call Two-Tone by the name of Tone in some instances in order to shorten how much they have to say; the same principles apply to writing as well, as Tone was written on the side of her picnic basket, rather than her full name.

In the episode ‘Dog’s Best Friend’, it is revealed that Lucky considers Rolly to be his best friend out of all the animals he knows.

Episode Quotes

(Cadpig and Spot are watching a soap-opera on television)
Gwendolyn: (on TV) Oh, Reginald, finally some time off together.
Reginald: (on TV) Just you, me, my hotdogs, your poupon.
Lucky: (running towards the TV, to Cadpig and Spot) Come on you guys, it’s time for the picnic!
Cadpig: Shush! We’re watching our favorite soap-opera: Veterinary Hospital!
Spot: It’s almost over!

Pongo: Well, thanks to Anita, today certainly turned out to be no picnic.
Perdita: What do you mean?
Pongo: She should stay here with her family.
Perdita: (disappointed) Oh, you are always on Roger’s side.

Anita: I’m leaving, Roger.
Roger: But.
Perdita: And I’m going with her, Pongo.
Pongo: But.
Cadpig: (gasping) Just like in Veterinary Hospital!
Rolly: Does this mean there’s no picnic?
Lucky: No picnic? She’s taking her clothes! We might not have a family anymore!
Cadpig: (sadly) I see a lot of therapy in our future. (happily) Won’t it be great?

(Lucky and Cadpig emerge from some clothes; they’re colored green due to being seasick)
Lucky: Oh, I don’t feel so hot; I think I’m getting seasick.
Cadpig: My center is definitely moving.

Perdita: Pongo!
Lucky: Uh-oh, here comes another fight!
Perdita: Are you hurt?
Pongo: I’m fine. Listen, Perdy, about this morning.
Perdita: I know Pongo; you’re on my side and I’m on yours.
Cadpig: (crying) There goes therapy!

Pongo: All right, kids, you have some explaining to do.
Lucky: Well, see, Rolly fell asleep in the car, and…
Pongo: (interrupting) Lucky.
Lucky: Okay. We thought mom and Anita were leaving forever.
Rolly: And we were really scared.
Perdita: So, you wanted to keep the family together?
Lucky, Rolly, Cadpig, Spot: Uh-huh.
Pongo: You know, you guys, just because we have a little disagreement…
Perdita: (continuing Pongo’s sentence) …doesn’t mean we’d leave each other.
Pongo: Yeah, looks like you’re stuck with us!
Cadpig: Well, this just goes to show you, family life isn’t always a picnic!
Rolly: Yeah! Sometimes it’s just a big food fight!

Cadpig: (giggling) So, you’re a world hunk, er, traveler, huh?
Blaze: Well, part of the world anyway. I’ve been camel herding in Egypt, running with the bulls in Spain, even searching for the yeti in the Himalayas.

Rolly: (eating corn-fritters) Ah, leave me alone.
Cadpig: Rolly, feelings are like the table of pies. If you eat every single one, eventually you’re gonna puke! I’m asking you to share your pie before you toss your cookies.
Rolly: Lucky and I were supposed to raid trash-cans today, but he never showed up! He’s with his new friend!
Cadpig: Now, now; it’s not like they’re spending every minute together/
(Lucky and Blaze come walking by)
Lucky: Blaze, it’s been great spending every minute together.

Rolly: And so, Blaze didn’t tear your picture of Thunderbolt; I did. It was a accident, but, I shoulda said something.
Lucky: Rolly; you’re supposed to be my friend!
Rolly: Well, see, that was the problem. I was afraid I wasn’t your friend anymore. You seemed to like Blaze a lot more than you ever liked me.
Lucky: Aw, Rolly, look, just because you get a new friend doesn’t mean you lose your old ones. You’re still my best friend.
Rolly: You mean that?!
Lucky: Of course! But you still owe me a Thunderbolt picture.

Roger: He’s right over here, Mr. Swanson. Hey Blaze, guess who’s here?
(Blaze runs and jumps into Mr. Swanson’s arms)
Mr. Swanson: Hey there, big fella! (to Roger) Yeah, I was so worried he’d get lost; you know, he’s never been out of Stiffle.
(Lucky, Rolly, Cadpig and Spot are glance at Blaze)
Blaze: (embarrassed) You know you can, you can learn an awful lot from cartoons.

Episode Goofs

In the episode ‘The Dogs Of De Vil’, when Anita opens up the cabinet to retrieve the dog-dishes, there are several errors in the sense. Patch has two dog-dishes in the cabinet, despite the fact that he is only supposed to have one; Rolly also has the same problem, though one of his dishes states his name is Roly, which is an incorrect spelling of his name.

In the episode ‘The Dogs Of De Vil’, when Perdita takes offense to Pongo’s comments, as she believes he always takes Roger’s side, both of their collars are on the wrong Dalmatian. Perdita’s collar is seen as red, despite the fact that she is supposed to have a blue collar, while Pongo’s collar is seen as blue, despite the fact that he’s supposed to have a red collar.

In the episode ‘The Dogs Of De Vil’, Spot lost all of her feathers and Cadpig put them all in a bag so she could put them back on. The next scene shows Spot with all of her feathers back and she looks normal, however, in a later scene, Roger runs over the same bag and Spot’s feathers are still inside of it. If Spot used her feathers to put them back on her body, the bag should have been empty and Roger shouldn’t have been capable of driving over the feather-filled bag, though if Spot didn’t use the feathers, Spot should have still been featherless in the later scenes.

In the episode ‘He Followed Me Home’, Cruella told the Dearlys that they made a contractual agreement where they could not keep any additional animals on the farm. However, in the episode ‘Dog’s Best Friend’, the Dearlys keep Blaze on the farm and there was no mention of their contract and nobody seemed to care of the said event.

In the episode ‘Dog’s Best Friend’, when Lucky corrects Rolly on what an anaconda is, he refers to blaze as a female, despite the fact that he is a male dog.

Cultural References

Cadpig: We’re watching our favorite soap-opera, Veterinary Hospital!

This is a reference to the real soap-opera that debuted in 1962, General Hospital, which is the one of the longest running soap-operas in the world, as new episodes are still in production. The series was responsible for setting many trends that have since been used in many different soap-operas on television. The reference takes place in the episode ‘The Dogs Of De Vil’, when Cadpig and Spot are watching television at the beginning of the episode.

Reginald: Just you, me, my hotdogs, your poupon.

This is a reference to the Dijon Mustard that is produced by Kraft Foods, Grey Poupon. The mustard became famous due to a commercial that involved a limousine driver pulling up to another limousine and asks the person inside if they had any Grey Poupon, which helped secure the mustard as a cultural icon in the United States of America. The reference is made in the episode ‘The Dogs of De Vil’, during the soap opera that Cadpig and Spot are watching at the beginning of the episode.

Cruella: How many times do I have to tell you? No more wire hangers!

This is a reference to the 1981 film entitled Mommie Dearest, which starred Faye Dunaway and Diana Scarwid. It was directed by Frank Perry and its plot focused on the relationship between actress Joan Crawford and her adopted daughter. The movie is often held in a lighter tone than it was intended, mostly due to a scene involving Joan Crawford becoming upset over wire hangers being used in her daughter’s closet. The reference is made in the episode ‘The Dogs of De Vil’, when Cruella becomes angry over the fact that Anita’s designs are being supported by wire hangers.

Blaze: You are all wrong! I am a genetic cyber-dog sent to destroy your puny world!

This is a reference to the 1984 action film entitled The Terminator, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film was directed by James Cameron and its plot focused on a woman who must elude a cyborg that was sent back in time to kill her, so that her child will never be born and won’t be capable of preventing a machine take-over of the world. The reference is made in the episode ‘Dog’s Best Friend’, when Blaze jokingly introduces himself to the Dalmatians as they’re questioning who he is.

Blaze: Running with the bulls in Spain.

This is a reference to the festival of San Fermin, which takes place in the city of Pamplona, which includes a festivity known as the running of the bulls. The festivity involves bulls running through a closed section of the city, in which anybody who wants to participate can run from the bulls in an attempt to get away from them. The reference is made in the episode ‘Dog’s Best Friend’, when Blaze tells the Dalmatians all of the things he’s done around the world.

Episode References

In the episode ‘Dog’s Best Friend’, Blaze told Lucky that Thunderbolt doesn’t do his own stunts, though Lucky expressed that he’s still the greatest. This was a reference to the episode ‘Watch For Falling Idols’, where Lucky discovered that fact for himself and came to terms with it.

Analysis

Rolly’s Secret Stash

In the episode ‘Dog's Best Friend’, Rolly’s secret stash of food that he hides from his friends is seen once again, in which Cadpig expresses in this episode that Rolly often breaks into his secret stash when he is depressed. Since Rolly is the most sensitive out of all the Dalmatians, he often becomes easily distraught, typically in spite of his friends’ attempts to help him out; though since he loves to eat, the fact that he gorges himself every time he gets depressed likely contributes to his being overweight. Rolly’s favorite food that he keeps in the stash are corn fritters, which plays a part in several episode plots throughout the series, as nearly everyone on the farm loves them.

Television Program

In the episode ‘The Dogs Of De Vil’, the television program that Cadpig and Spot were watching was first seen in the episode ‘Swine Song’. However, in that episode, Spot wasn’t a fan of the series and she was just as bored as Lucky and Rolly were with it, despite the fact that Cadpig loved the series. Despite this, in this episode, Cadpig and Spot seem to love the series just as much as one another and they both cry at the end of the episode due to its sentimental nature. If one assumes that this wasn’t a mistake on the part of the writers, it can safely be assumed that Cadpig had persuaded Spot to check the series out, in which she became a fan of the series, despite the fact that she was bored to tears by it in the past.
