Why is the series so much different than the movies based on the same franchise?: 101 Dalmatians: The Series was based more on Dodie Smith’s original 1956 children’s novel, The Hundred and One Dalmatians, which is what Disney’s animated and live-action movies were loosely based off of. However, Disney’s movies took many creative liberties that differed from the book, such as changing names and adding characters; though this animated series returns to the franchise’s roots and it’s handled in a more traditional fashion. | How come the series mostly focuses on three dogs and a chicken, and where are the other Dalmatians?: The series was initially going to star five Dalmatians: Lucky, Rolly, Cadpig, Patch and Penny. However, Patch and Penny were ultimately cut because the individuals behind the series decided that it would have been impractical to focus on so many characters in each episode; though Spot was planned to be a character from the very beginning. While the other ninety-six Dalmatian puppies do appear as background characters, only a few of them are unique and they’re mostly used as plot devices. | Why is Cruella De Vil no longer trying to use the Dalmatians’ coats in her fashion designs?: Disney’s standards and practices felt that it wouldn’t be proper to have a Saturday morning children’s cartoon that focused on such grim issues. However, Cruella De Vil still openly expresses hatred towards the Dalmatians, in which several of the characters make references throughout the series that directly mentions her prior desire to kidnap the dogs and turn them into clothing. |
