Season 5 begins 18 months after the end of season 4.
Former guest stars Mary Lynn Rajskub, Gregory Itzin, James Morrison, Roger Cross and Louis Lombardi are now credited in the main cast list at the start of the show. Newcomer Jean Smart joins them whilst Carlos Bernard is reinstated after his stint as a special guest star during season 4.
Reiko Aylesworth is credited as a special guest star whilst Dennis Haysbert is credited with special guest appearance.
Audrey Raines returns to CTU as a liaison for the DoD.
