18 months after the end of last season, at an oil field in Mojave, California, job assignments are being handed out. Amongst the group of men is Jack who doesn't get any work today. The man handing out the assignments calls out to Frank, Jack's new name, and apologises for not giving him any work but Pump 7 went offline last night. It's okay, Jack will just try again tomorrow.
In Los Angeles, California, at Wayne Palmer's apartment, he and his brother are working on David's memoirs. David seems distant and Wayne asks him why. Whatever it is, he can tell him. David says it's alright, really. Wayne walks away and suggests they get back to work. David looks out of the window as he appears troubled by something. Wayne mentions a chapter, one where there'll be a lot of questions about Sherry. At that moment, there's a shot through the window and David Palmer collapses to the floor - he's been shot in the neck. Wayne screams at the Secret Service to get help.
At the Presidential retreat in Hidden Valley, California, there's a phone call which Mike takes. President Logan discusses his wife with Walt - she can't have one of her meltdowns today while he signs a treaty with the Russian president. Mike gets off the phone, he looks in shock. Logan asks him what's wrong. "David Palmer's been assassinated."
At CTU, Bill is running things and speaks with the President in a video conference. Palmer's killer hasn't been caught yet. Logan doesn't want protocols, he wants results. Bill tries to persuade the President to postpone the meeting with his Russian counterpart but he refuses.
Chloe wakes up and tells the man next to her, Spenser, to get out of her bed. It turns out he works for her at CTU and they slept together last night. Chloe receives a text message letting her know that President Palmer's been shot dead.
Jack watches the news about Palmer's assassination and sheds a tear. There's a knock on the door, it's a woman, Diane, who invites him to breakfast. She tells her son, Derek, that Frank will be joining them but he's not too happy about that. Derek shuns Jack who tries to give him a glass for his orange juice. Derek questions Jack about a rig he used to work on and mentions a friend's brother who works on that rig - that brother has never heard of a Frank Flynn. Jack counters saying it's a big rig and a lot of guys just use nicknames out there.
Michelle and Tony are watching the news at home. Michelle tries to call CTU but Tony insists they'll call if they're needed. They no longer work at CTU anymore, it's not their job plus they have a presentation to make in an hour. Michelle doesn't want to look back on today knowing that she could've helped and leaves. Tony makes a phonecall to say Michelle won't be at the meeting today then decides he won't either and will be joining Michelle. Suddenly, there's an explosion that shatters the glass window and throws Tony to the floor. Outside, the car is a blazing wreck and Michelle lies underneath a blown off car door. Tony holds her in his arms as another explosion takes place behind him.
Edgar calls Chloe to tell her Michelle's dead from a car bomb and Tony's not doing so good. Bill thinks it may be linked to Palmer's assassination. Chloe was about to put her key into her car when she pauses and looks around. A man steps out of a van watching her. Chloe starts to run and the man gives chase.
Jack offers to fix Diane's fence today seeing as he's not working. His cellphone rings - it's Chloe. She tells Jack about Michelle and Tony as the well as the man who was chasing her. She thinks it's all connected to Jack - four people knew he was still alive and now three of them are down. Jack tells Chloe to go dark and to meet up at an abandoned oil refinery as he gathers his things together from a secret compartment in the wall of his room.
Bill sets his CTU team to work. He's notified that the DoD liaison has arrived, it's Audrey. She tells Bill the President wants to make sure CTU's top priority is security for the summit.
President Logan is making a speech about David Palmer's assassination while his wife, Martha, is given the finishing touches to her appearance by her assistant, Evelyn. Martha thinks she looks like a wedding cake and dunks her face in water. Walt Cummings enters to inform Martha of Palmer's death. She's distraught but insists she has to talk to her husband immediately and runs off to find him. Walt tells Secret Service to not let her anywhere near the stage as President Logan is still making a speech to journalists.
A Secret Service agent blocks off Martha who starts to shout at him. Mike hears the commotion in the distance and intervenes. Walt manages to make the First Lady see sense and is told to have Logan speak to her when he's done.
Jack arrives at an oil refinery and knocks out a workman. He hears something behind him and discovers Derek has followed him. He can't let him leave now so he orders him to get in a nearby helicopter.
Tony is wheeled into surgery at CTU. Curtis tells Bill he may have found something in Tony's phone records. The last time Tony spoke to President Palmer was the day Jack was killed. Attempting to pull up the transcripts reveals only a corrupted file.
Derek tries to get an explanation from Jack who tells him he's someone that's not supposed to still be alive. Jack phones Diane and tells her to start driving towards Los Angeles where she can pick up Derek.
Martha apologises to her husband about her behaviour earlier. She thinks Palmer was killed because of something he was about to tell her. He wanted to arrange a meeting to talk about an issue concerning national security and involved President Logan. However, she doesn't think her husband believes her and insists she's not crazy. President Logan tells her he'll have Walt look into it. He leaves the room and tells Walt his wife thinks she in the middle of one of her conspiracy theories. Walt asks what they should do and Logan replies: "Nothing."
Edgar is worried about Chloe, it's been half an hour since he spoke to her and she should've arrived at CTU by now. He asks Spenser if he's seen her and whether she's okay or not. He learns that the two of them slept together last night.
Chloe arrives at the abandoned oil refinery whilst Jack lands nearby. She hugs him and asks what's happening. Why would anyone want to kill the people that know Jack's alive? Jack, Chloe and Derek get back into the helicopter but the people who were chasing Chloe have arrived at a gate in the distance. The helicopter blades are still spinning up, they're not going to be able to take off in time. Jack tells Chloe to take Derek and find a hiding place. He lets off a few smoke bombs to decrease visibility and draws his gun. The men separate to try and find Jack. Jack stabs one of the men in the back amidst the smoke. Another man drives a car around erratically and Jack steps out to shoot him dead. The remaining man, the one who shot David Palmer earlier, wanders about and finds Chloe and Derek. Just as he's about to kill them, Jack shoots him in the leg which alerts Chloe who shoots at the man. Jack questions him with the promise that he'll take the man to hospital and learns that Palmer was the primary target, the others were only diversions to lure out Jack and set him up as Palmer's assassinator. After talking, the man asks to be taken to hospital. Jack stands up and walks a short distance before turning around and shooting Palmer's assassinator dead with one shot.
