It now seems likely that the most recent series of "24" will be the last(although there is talk of a "24" movie, with Kiefer Sutherland in the title role of anti-hero Jack Bauer of course).
I for my part, will be overjoyed to see the permanent departure of this series for although its premise is original- each episode represents an hour in the life of CTU agent Jack Bauer- its ethical approach sucks( to use American slang). I refer of course to those instances when Jack either threatens or uses torture on recalcitrant terror suspects, justifying it with the "ticking time bomb "scenario.
It is NOT good enough to say breezily -"relax, it's just a TV series"- not when real life Administration figures justify "enhanced interrogation techniques" ( ie. torture) such as "waterboarding" by pointing to the"ticking time bomb" argument used by Jack. Such is the show's popularity amongst US troops that the military has officially protested to the show that they are indirectly condoning brutality- "if torture's okay for Jack Bauer then why NOT in real life?" which arguably led to the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal and "Gitmo".

Previous law enforcement officers in movies or TV may have played fast and loose with ethics such as "Dirty Harry" and "Kojak", but they were at least local policemen( San Francisco and New York)- for Jack Bauer, a Federal of the(admittedly fictional) Counter Terrorist Unit to use torture with never a hint of reprimand far less prosecution carries the not so subtle hint that such conduct is not only tacitly endorsed by his superiors but ultimately America's highest elected official- The President Of The United States.

"Kids-DON'T try this at home" was the message of shows like "Batman" and "Superman" in the 1950s and 60s in case the tots were impressionable enough to try to imitate the feats of the Caped Crusader or The Man of Steel- how depressing that adults have to be reminded of the same thing in the 21st century.

Good bye "24" and good riddance!

Terry

I only breezed through this rant, but where did you get the idea that this show's ending? It's doing fairly well in the airings...

Here's the latest article I've read about 24 ending after this season. No idea about its accuracy.

I thought they had said it was to end last season, but the writer's strike and Kiefer's imprisonment forced them to skip all of last season and move the final season to 2009? Although a Newsweek article says that Kiefer will decide when this season ends if this was the final season or if the will do just one more.

This is so funny that people make a big deal about this on 24 and they either ignore or choose to ignore the obvious:

1) Torture has been around for a long time and has been accepted yes even by the military before 24 . 2) If U.S. troops like the show and military protest what they see then they should obviously make a lesson of pointing the wrongs of such use and not too mention not allow torture in real life. It's that simple. I hear Stargate SG-1 is popular among the military tell me are they building Stargates all over the world? If so I really want to visit the Asgards.

I heard it was renewed for AT LEAST seasons 7 and 8 when season 6 ended, (take note that this article came before the writer's strike, and obviously before season 7 was delayed a year, so now the show should be on until at least 2010) and they didn't skip a season. Season 7 was postponed a year due to the writer's strike, and FOX wanted it to air as a non stop season like they've been doing since season four. I highly doubt this will be the last season. The show does quite well in the ratings, especially for FOX. 24's one of FOX's best series in terms of ratings and critical reception. They would've notified us by now, or at least advertise it as the "final season" if this were truly the end. I'll believe it when I see a more reliable source.

Yeah, he signed on to season 8!!!! Plus, since there was the writers strike, his "imprisonment" hardly effected the overall stance of the delay of this season.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

i wish i could put into words how, in my opinion, ridiculous this statement is.

at least preface this by saying, "i know my country was the world's tyrant long,... long before the land the United States rests upon was even known to exist by the 'scholarly world', but...".

a wise man once told me to "never underestimate the stupidity of morons".
