Counter Terrorist Unit agent Jack Bauer is assigned to protect presidential candidate David Palmer from a potential assassination attempt. Unfortunately, his daughter has disappeared and someone within CTU may be involved. Mandy seduces Martin Belkin, a photographer headed for a meeting with the Senator.
Jack rushes to the aid of CTU Director Richard Walsh who comes into possession of a keycard and ends up in a shootout. Gaines encounters trouble acquiring Martin Belkin's ID from Mandy. Elsewhere, Kim realises the gravity of her situation.
As Kim and Janet temporarily escape their captors, Senator Palmer learns that his son may have been involved in the death of his daughter's rapist 7 years ago. Gaines finally gets Belkin's ID from Mandy, while Jack delivers the keycard to CTU.
Jamey extracts an address from the keycard and Jack pursues it. Teri and Alan York are pulled over for speeding and Alan complicates the situation. District Director George Mason returns to lockdown CTU. Janet gets picked up by an ambulance.
Jack skirts Mason in order to break a cop-killer out of jail. Teri and Alan track Janet down at St. Mark's Hospital. Kim's kidnappers deliver to Gaines. Palmer confronts his son about the death of Lyle Gibson.
Kim and Rick bury the murdered Dan, Janet is moved out of ICU and the truth about "Alan York" is revealed. Jack finds Teri at St. Mark's, but their reunion is short-lived as Gaines uses his leverage against Jack.
Gaines orders Jack to switch the keycard that Milo is decrypting with a decoy. Teri learns Alan York's true identity; Rick resolves to help Kim escape.
Gaines orders Jack to a Los Angeles nuclear power plant where Senator Palmer is giving a public address, which Jonathan also attends as Martin Belkin. At CTU, Nina and Tony deal with Jamey, who is revealed as the mole. Teri is delivered by Kevin Carroll, formerly Alan York, to Gaines' facility, where she is reunited with Kim.
Jack escapes Secret Service custody and takes a waitress hostage. Tony and Nina threaten to bring Jamey's son in if she doesn't cooperate. Teri makes a difficult sacrifice to protect Kim. Sherry persuades Maureen Kingsley not to go public with the Lyle Gibson murder story.
Jamey dies after slitting her wrists. Jack requires Nina's help to escape a police perimeter in downtown Los Angeles. Teri and Kim secure a cellphone and call CTU. Drazen informs Gaines of a Plan B that may not involve him. Carl takes care of the evidence against Keith.
Jack poses as a limo driver to meet with a possible suspect. Rick gives Teri and Kim an advantage. A new acting director is brought in to take over the CTU. Drazen's Plan B is set into motion, eliminating the need for Jack's family. Teri suffers from abdominal pains.
Jack meets Kevin Carroll again and dragoons him into taking him to his family. Rick helps Teri and Kim escape as Gaines' men evacuate the compound. Nina and Tony are interrogated by Alberta Green as to Jack's whereabouts. Palmer learns the fate of George Farragamo.
In a hasty escape, Jack instructs Teri and Kim to go ahead to a safespot where he will meet them. Gaines and Carroll stalk Jack and Rick through the woods outside the compound. Palmer demands to make a public statement to the DA. Nina and Tony question Jamey's mother.
Another assassin makes quick work of cleaning up the mess of Gaines' operation. Teri and Kim are taken to a hospital for examination. Palmer learns that planted evidence can implicate Keith in Farragamo's death. Regional Director Ryan Chappelle comes in to take Jack's statement.
Palmer visits Jack at CTU and their connection is finally revealed. Nina supervises the transportation of Teri and Kim to the CTU safehouse. Someone inside Palmer's campaign is connected to the hitman. Jack and Palmer find a third target with information on the assassins.
Elizabeth Nash is brought into CTU for questioning. Jack finds his resources at work severely cut due to his probationary status. The safehouse is attacked after Nina leaves and Teri and Kim barely escape. Jack and Mason devise a plan that may give them an advantage against the assassins.
Jack and Mason implement a delicate operation attempting to place a tracker on assassin Alexis Drazen. Teri, still without her memory, runs across a familiar restaurant where she meets a man from her past, Dr. Phil Parslow. Kim contacts CTU, but refuses to disclose her whereabouts, turning instead to Rick. Keith procures proof of Carl's involvement in Farragamo's death.
Jack is forced to the work with Teddy Hanlin, the ex-partner of one of the agents Jack busted, when he poses as Alexis Drazen to contact a man with information on the remainder of the assassination plot. Tony questions Mason's ethics dealing with the disappearance of Jack's family. Dr. Parslow diagnoses Teri before taking her home. Kim and Rick meet Dan's brother, Frank.
Teri returns home in an effort to jog her memory. Mason and Jack investigate a lead at a wildlife preserve in Sargus, obtained by Palmer. Frank gets nervous after learning of Dan's death, because the lack of money puts a kink in his planned drug deal.
Jack continues his search of an apparently deserted area, finding a Class III detention facility run by Mark DeSalvo, who knows why the Drazens want the power cut. Mason heads back to interrogate Alexis Drazen. Rick tells Kim what to tell the cops. The country responds to Palmer's press conference regarding Keith.
Andre Drazen leads an incursion team to break out his father, the very-much-alive Victor Drazen. Teri returns to the CTU. Jack ends up on the wrong side of a hostage situation. Kim is interrogated and stands up to Melanie in prison. Mason, Nina and Tony run a rescue operation. Palmer wins the 11 primary states in an advance poll, and learns of his speechwriter's secret affections for him.
Victor offers a deal to the Feds. Palmer makes his own deal in order to help Jack after learning the elder Drazen is alive. CTU learns the latest on Kim.
Jack is forced to do the Drazen's bidding. CTU uncovers a lead on a second traitor. Kim witnesses the reunion of Victor and Alexis. Palmer deals with the advances of his affectionate speechwriter.

The third season opens three years after President Palmer's palm peril, with Jack Bauer back onboard at CTU for the latest L.A. crisis - a lethal virus. While taut situations define the series, what stands out in this commercial-free opener are the telltale tensions among the personalities. The president's impatient brother is his new chief of staff; a more mature Kim Bauer is a new CTU techie who has a strangely testy co-worker; and lone ranger Jack is now paired with an edgy new partner, Chase.
Jack and Chase visit the last address of the infected body; Palmer suggests cancelling the debate, but Wayne disagrees, hinting at a vulnerability in their opponent; Hector's location is narrowed down.
Jack and Nicole Duncan invade the Singer's home, and soon realize that the virus is out. They quarantine the place, but the powder turns out to be uncontaminated, and Jack pieces together that Kyle is infected with the virus. Chase is still angry that Jack sidelined him because of his relationship with Kim.
Kyle escapes the sting at the mall while Tony is critically wounded; Kyle and his girlfriend are later captured by Salazar's men. Palmer must refuse to negotiate so Jack turns "rogue" to break Salazar out of prison so the virus isn't released, but Chase gets in the way. And despite the advice of his brother, Palmer eventually decides not to pay off Anne's ex-husband.
Jack's "rescue" of Salazar goes awry when they get caught in the eye of the prison riot; Chloe unwittingly discovers Jack's heroin addiction; during the debate, Palmer is grilled by his opponent; Kyle tries to hang himself, only to have him and his girlfriend rescued. CTU finds Kyle Singer. Jack and Salazar get in a chopper and leave. Just as they're taking off Chase gets a call that Singer has been taken into custody, but he can't get a hold of Jack.
Jack's chopper is forced to land in Downtown LA. He and Salazar steal a car and make for the airport to get Salazar out of the country. Kyle Singer is brought into the LA Health Unit; several tests reveal that he is, in fact, not infected. Tony gets out of surgery, and will make a full recovery. Kim learns that Gael is a Mole when she finds his laptop containing surveilance data on Jack and Kyle and is held captive.
Aboard Salazar's plane, his men have a hard time restraining him from killing Jack, now their hostage; Bauer manages to turn the tables on his captors and hold Ramon at gunpoint until the plane lands.
Anne meets with her ex-husband to pick up letters that will prove her innocence, but things get out of hand; Hector fills Ramon in the reasons for their new alliance with Jack Bauer and assures him that once they buy the virus, they will kill him; Claudia reveals her true nature when she tells Jack how angry she is with him for leaving her behind when his operation ended; Chase arrives in Mexico, and compromises Jack's cover.
The President briefs the nation on why he ended the debate early. He tells a reporter that Anne is innocent, and that they have proof. A high ranking campaign donor insists that Palmer fire Wayne over an affair he had with his wife; Jack makes contact again with Claudia and tells her the plan. He asks for her help in keeping Chase alive and in helping them to escape once the deal is done. The deal goes sour when Nina Myers shows up to buy the virus, outbidding the Salazar's. Jack, Hecter and Ramon plot to steal the virus back from her. What is initially percieved as Tony having memory problems is starting to look like its Kim who is making mistakes.
With Jack still undercover, the Salazars torture Chase looking for information about CTUís plans to seize the virus. Meanwhile, Palmerís presidency is being sabotaged by a onetime supporter who wants Wayne fired. To combat this, Palmer turns to a surprising source of help.
Jack forces Nina to work with him in order to get the virus from Amador. Palmer meets with Sherry and convinces her to help him deal with Milliken. Chase remains in Mexico to help with the capture of the virus. Ramon and Hector quarrel when Hector wants to pull out of the deal.
Tensions escalate at CTU with the arrival of a cocky systems analyst and a question about Chloe's baby; Sherry gets the goods on Milliken, but Palmer balks at the price.
Sherry goes to drastic measures to keep Milliken quiet for good. Nina still needs to complete her objective and she uses new tactics in order to try and secure the virus. A friend of Nina Myers enters the plot. At CTU problems arise and Chloe's skills are needed but she and Angela have left, Chloe comes back to CTU and will soon use her skills to ensure the safety of Los Angeles.
After confronting Jack about his drug use, Chappelle considers pulling him from active duty. Meanwhile, Chase faces a secret he's been keeping from CTU; and Sherry creates a dangerous lie to cover her connection to Alan Milliken.
Chappelle threatens to pull Jack from the investigation for killing a material witness, but Jack persuades him to hold off when they find a fresh lead on Amador's whereabouts. Amador and Alvers meet with the man who is planning to unleash the virus in LA within the hour. Michelle and Gael locate the target area, but things really hit the fan when they attempt to capture Alvers in the process of releasing the virus. Wayne argues with Sherry over the consequences of Milliken's death as the police turn up the heat on Julia.
Jack and Chase track Amador in the hopes that he can lead them to the man behind the virus attack. Michelle faces a mob riot when the hotel is quarantined. Sherry extorts Palmer, forcing him to manufacture her alibi for the police.
Saunders begins making demands on the President. He forces Palmer to hold a strange press conference and then orders the death of the CTU agent who can trace him. Jack learns of a woman who can lead him to Saunders, but a surprise attack shifts the balance of power. As Gael's symptoms get worse, Michelle devises a way to relieve the suffering of the victims at the hotel.
Jack and Chase race against time to capture Saunders before the deadline, while Chappelle plans an escape. Michelle begins a frantic search when she learns that an infected hotel guest may have slipped through her fingers.
Jack urges caution with a new lead and it comes back to bite him; Cole seeks help for his nose; Palmer convenes the cabinet before hearing Saunders' next demand, and ultimate goal.
The President is ordered to leave L.A., and asks the press to help maximize public safety; Jack gives Jane a crash course on her father; the virus affects another CTU operative.
Jane and Kim head back to Los Angeles in the CTU motorcade. President Palmer must make a decision regarding Saunders newest demand. Sherry approaches Palmer's political opponent with a unique offer. CTU gets intel on Saunders location but soon realize he has a new asset.
Jack is about 100 miles outside of Los Angeles. He makes his way to the coast of the city of Santa Barbara. He gets a lead on the bio-terrorists and goes to Cal State Santa Barbara University. He engages in a fierce chase and firefight and recovering Kim from the hands of the terrorists is his primary objective. Jack's secondary objective is the remaining vials.
In the city of Santa Barbera Jack will interview a gunshot victim at Marriot City Park. The victim is a white male about 6'3. Jack asks him some questions as he is going into an ambulance. Jack calls someone on his cell and relays some intel. Jack sees Kim sitting down on a bench near the command post and he walks over to her and they talk, at the end of the conversation Jack kisses Kim on the forehead. A black CTU SWAT team van will be there and two local Santa Barbera cops will arrive in patrol cars. Jane Saunders gets taken out of the CTU field operations command post. Kim, a black CTU agent and a white CTU agent take Jane into a awaiting car. Jane is asked a few questions by another unknown female agent then Kim and Jane leave in the beige CTU car.
Palmer's White House woes escalate when Saunders demands that he dissolve the U.S. military. Jack finds a chink in The Evil British Guy's armor. Gun-toting Kim stays busy in the field. Tony could face the death penalty for failing to maintain national security. Says co-executive producer Evan Katz: "We're ending the story with a bunch of big events that are extremely surprising."
Eighteen months have elapsed since the conclusion of Day 3. A commuter train bound for Los Angeles explodes. A man steals a suitcase from a passenger in the wreckage and then kills him. Jack has been dismissed from CTU and now works for Secretary of Defense James Heller. Jack is involved with Heller's daughter, Audrey, and their relationship is growing serious. Jack is in LA for a meeting with CTU Director Erin Driscoll, who fired him a year ago, but he finds himself alienated at CTU by Driscoll and the new staff when reports of a possible terrorist strike come in. A young computer hacker named Andrew Paige sees something that he shouldn't on the Internet. Suddenly, he finds himself running for his life as he is pursued by terrorists. Luckily, he is able to warn Chloe O'Brian before its too late. The Turkish Araz family are not what they seem and it becomes clear that they are heavily involved with the day's events. Meanwhile, Heller has a confrontation with his estranged son. Jack finds that Chloe is his only ally as he tries to prove that the train explosion is merely a diversionary target.
Jack pushes Driscoll to reinstate him in the wake of Heller's kidnapping. He finds himself working as a subordinate when the Field Ops team goes to pick up Andrew. Behrooz finds himself torn between his loyalty to his parents and his feelings for his girlfriend as he is sent on his first assignment. Heller tries to comfort his daughter as his captors broadcast their intensions on the Internet.
Jack tracks Kalil with Chloe's aid, but is forced to watch helplessly as Andrew is tortured for information. Behrooz pleads with his parents when they order him to bring Debbie to their home for questioning. Curtis uses harsh methods to interrogate Heller's son as Driscoll continues to search for Jack.
Jack acts as a bandit and takes hostages to buy Chloe more time to get satellite surveillance. Meanwhile, Chloe must confide in Edgar for help when Driscoll becomes suspicious. Behrooz discovers just how far his mother is willing to go to insure that their secret mission is successful. Heller and Audrey attempt to escape from Omar, while Driscoll uses her influence to deal with a personal crisis.
Jack and Driscoll agree to work together when the police make a critical error in dealing with Kalil. Heller and Audrey take drastic action in the hopes of avoiding the impending trial. Driscoll makes a deal with Chloe to get her out of the way, while the Araz family faces another problem in their cover-up.
Jack initiates a fierce gun battle with the terrorists as he races to rescue Heller and Audrey before the military strike begins. Dina questions her own dedication to their cause when her husband reveals his plans for Behrooz. Driscoll and Curtis uncover new evidence that points to an even bigger attack by the terrorists. Audrey has an awkward meeting with her husband, and Heller butts heads once again with his son.
Jack takes Audrey to ID the man she recognized at the compound, but the terrorists get there soon after and pin them down. Jack must call on an old friend to help him escape. Heller puts Edgar in charge of dealing with the nuclear override, while Driscoll's daughter takes a turn for the worse. Dina is wounded when she helps Behrooz flee from Navi. Navi's boss orders him to kill his wife and son before the day is over.
Jack and Audrey hide out with an embittered Tony as Audrey makes a positive ID of the man from the kidnapping. Marianne successfully diverts suspicion from herself, leading Driscoll to torture the wrong person for information. Behrooz takes Dina to a hospital for medical attention, but the doctor becomes suspicious of her gunshot wound and phones the police.
Jack and Tony are able to trace Dina's location, but Behrooz slips through their fingers. Dina demands a full pardon for her son in exchange for information on the override device. Edgar wrestles with his emotions when his mother is trapped in the path of the nuclear fall-out. Behrooz turns to his uncle for help, but Navi closes in on him before he can get away.
Audrey places herself in a compromising position when she and Jack learn of her husband's possible involvement with the terrorists. Marianne offers Curtis information on the location of the override device in exchange for a lighter sentence, but the tables soon turn and Curtis discovers that there's another player in the game. Sarah bargains for a stronger position at CTU, while Tony takes charge of the interrogation of Dina and Behrooz.
Jack and Curtis finally learn the location of the override device. They try to trap the architect of the terrorist strike before the remaining nuclear plants go critical. Tony pushes Dina to reveal more of her knowledge of Marwan, while Driscoll faces another personal crisis with her daughter.
Jack and Paul visit the defense contractor who employed Marwan, but the company executives put their own interests ahead of CTU's and take major steps to destroy evidence. After a grief-stricken Driscoll relinquishes her command, Heller appoints Tony as interim director to oversee the latest crisis.
Jack and Paul are hunted down by soldiers after an electromagnetic pulse bomb wipes out every electrical device for miles. Meanwhile, Michelle Dessler takes over at CTU.
Jack learns the identity of a man who may be able to lead him to Marwan. He forces Dina to help him in a mock hostage situation that will get him close to the suspect. As international delegates reconvene at the United Nations, President Taylor's goodwill comes into question and CTU races against time to assist with the mission.
The Bazhaev abduct Jack and attempt to torture him into revealing who he really works for. Meanwhile, Renee is taken to CTU and debriefed on the death of Vladimir Laitanan, President Taylor demands results from Hastings, and Omar continues to ignore his daughter and put pressure on dissidents in his homeland.

When the Russians threaten to back out of the peace process, Taylor is forced to call upon former President Logan for help. Meanwhile, Jack finds a few minutes of happiness, only to have his world come crashing down upon him. And Chloe assumes new responsibilities in the aftermath of the mole's infiltration of CTU.
In the aftermath of a close friend's death, Jack must deal with betrayal by the President, who will do anything to preserve the peace treaty.

President Taylor prepares to sign the treaty, while Logan gives the order to have Jack disposed of,. Meanwhile, Chloe and Ortiz are taken into custody to prevent the evidence against the Russians from being released. Only one person's conscience can prevent the conspiracy from emerging triumphant.
