Episode Recap

Annie is busy at home making brownies for Sam, David and Eric when they come home. Eric is a little annoyed, saying he was mistaken for their grandfather by their teacher; and although they have all met with the teacher he can’t figure out where she got that idea. Annie points out that she and Eric are old enough to be the twins’ grandparents but it’s still kind of funny he’d be called “Grandpa.” He doesn’t, however. She insists that if they stood side by side, they’d look exactly the same age – it is perhaps the fact he was alone and not with her that led to the confusion. After the twins grab some brownies and head upstairs, claiming they don’t have any homework, Annie suggests to Eric they have sex. He wonders where she’s getting the energy for that. His wife replies that since there are only two kids left in the house she has a lot more spare time and not so many chores to do. The twins come back downstairs with Happy and say they’re going over to the Kinkirks so they can play with Sampson and Delilah. Annie and Eric say they’re okay with that and wish them a good time. The twins leave and say goodbye – and mutter “Grandpa” under their breaths.

In the evening, Annie is microwaving leftovers and humming “When the Saints Go Marching In” and calls Eric down to dinner. As he comes down, Sam and David come in with Happy; as well as Kevin and Savannah. But Lucy’s absent. Kevin says that Lucy has been going door to door with the congregants apologizing for what she said about the family. However, she’s not doing that. Instead, she’s been going to the movies. She’s a little perturbed that the movie house hasn’t brought in a new movie for Friday, has been the same movie for weeks and in fact is already out on DVD. The ticket agent says that’s common with a lot of movies these days, then says he knows who she is, even though he doesn’t attend her church, and that the entire city is still talking about Lucy’s sermon. And, for what it’s worth, he doesn’t think Kevin is all that hot. Lucy is annoyed at this and wonders if he’s coming on to her. The agent insists he’s over eighteen, and offers to get her pizza when the movie is over.

Martin shows up at Sandy’s apartment, unexpectedly. Sandy’s upset that he didn’t even bother to knock, but Martin quickly offers to make dinner saying it’s the least he can do. Sandy agrees, as long as it doesn’t mean any commitment. Meanwhile, Kevin tells Eric that Lucy’s been cold to him lately and doesn’t want to get intimate. Eric half dozes through this, and then finally admits he’s tired because of his and Annie’s “session” that afternoon; and he can’t help himself because she’s been too caring as of late. Kevin is pretty sure he doesn’t want to hear about that and makes his leave. On the way out, he stops in the kitchen and sees Annie, saying he has totally lost control over what happened to Lucy and just wishes she’d snap out of it. He can’t understand how he and she are handling it so differently. Annie says Lucy’s breakdown at the church is probably going to be as bad as it gets.

Lucy leaves the theatre, and the mystery man runs into her. Suggesting the rest of her family has probably already eaten and given up on her coming home any time soon, he again offers pizza, bargaining it down to just a slice. She agrees – as long as it’s him that needs someone to talk to.

Martin and Sandy finish dinner – chicken picatta. He says he’s starting to feel more comfortable around her, and she replies that she feels the same way. He then offers to clean up. Lucy tells her new friend she’s always been an emotional person, and after months of coping with what she had to go through, she finally just lost it. She lied to Kevin about wanting to apologize to her congregants because she just didn’t want to talk to anyone and get out of the house so she could get in touch with her feelings. She says she’s still not sure how she feels about it. Eric is asleep on the couch when Annie wants him to go back to bed. He says he’s too tired. Annie’s upset and storms out of the living room. After a moment, he gets up, but Annie says “good night” and he falls right back into the couch.

Martin calls Kevin and thanks him for the advice, thinking it might be the key to getting back into bed with Sandy. Kevin is horrified and says that’s not what he had in mind that he should just try to be nice to Sandy for the sake of Aaron. Martin says that Kevin never made that clear and he wants to have a sexual relationship with Sandy again. It’s only then he realizes there’s a baby monitor on the desk and, panicking, asks Kevin if they’re one or two way. Too late, for Sandy is standing in the doorway of her bedroom, furious. Martin hangs up, says good night to Sandy, and runs out.

Lucy, still talking to her younger friend, named T-Bone that she’s sick and tired of pleasing everyone; and has to start pleasing herself. Kevin’s been trying to please her so much that he cooks almost every night; recently, it’s been chicken picatta, pork etofée and beef bourguignon. T-Bone says that no normal man cooks that, is supposed to cook that, and offers her a grilled cheese sandwich instead. He insists it’s just a sandwich and for what it’s worth, he’s eighteen and she’s twenty-five. She thanks him but says no and leaves. As she does, her cell phone rings. It’s Sandy, who’s fuming over what happened that night. She tells Lucy she has to talk to Martin because Kevin told him if he cooked for her she might want to sleep with Martin. Lucy’s shocked, and hangs up.

Kevin is reading a gun magazine at home, when Lucy comes in. She says she hasn’t apologized to anyone and has just been out, and wonders why her husband hasn’t been cooking lately. He replies that since she’s been out so much there was no point in cooking just for himself and Savannah. For the record, he insists he never told Martin to try to seduce Sandy but just to be nice to her – and yes, he did share his recipe for the picatta. Lucy is upset that people seem to think that the way to the heart – and body – of a member of the opposite sex is through food; and withholding from cooking is a sign they don’t want to have sex. She then says she doesn’t just want to be intimate with Kevin anymore, and admits she’s been to the movies. When he asks her if she was with anyone, Lucy just walks away.

Sam and David see their father sleeping on the couch. They wonder if their father is really sleeping, and from what he’s really “tired” from, and both deny they told their teacher he was their “grandfather.” As they walk away, Eric wakes up, feeling just a bit annoyed at what he’s heard.

The next day, Eric is busy making lunches for the boys and a pot of coffee for himself and Annie. Kevin walks in and says that he and his wife had an argument. He’s shocked to see the way Eric’s dressed: He’s wearing a Ramones T-shirt, and his baseball hat is on backwards. Kevin says that Lucy admitted she had a “date” with the ticket seller. Sam and David say they’ll wait for their father outside. When they step out, Kevin says he doesn’t know why he married into a family of ministers; that he’s in the “religious Twilight Zone.” Lucy is on the phone talking to Sandy about the previous night. She’s still upset with Martin and wonders if Lucy is upset with her. Lucy says that she doesn’t want anyone to make mistakes. A bit perturbed by this, Sandy hangs up. Lucy calls right back and says she never meant that Aaron was an “accident,” but rather meant to say that some people who want kids never have them, while others who don’t, do. She then admits she’s a bit mad at Sandy for wanting to be a minister and cutting into her turf.

Kevin then shows up at home, carrying a full breakfast that he made over at the Camdens. Lucy’s also been cooking – potato pancakes. Eric comes into the school, still dressed down and carrying the lunches that Sam and David forgot. The teacher, named Margo, and him talk a bit about their common interest with the Ramones and what happened to them; then says he’s the boys’ father and all seven kids are his. Margo apologizes, thinking they were part of a blended family, and then says the boys told her he was their grandfather. She suspects it was because they didn’t want their father to be fooling around or to be tempted to do so, but admits sheepishly he looks too good to be a minister.

Later, Sam and David come in with their father as Annie’s doing the laundry. Annie asks if he was dressed like that all day. He says he was but only talked to people on the phone or to visually impaired people so they wouldn’t be the wiser. They then talk about how Mary called them. Annie’s been invited to spend two weeks babysitting Charlie and his twin sisters, while Mary begins her stint as a basketball coach. Eric wishes he was invited but Annie says that might wait for another time. Annie then mentions it’s just Lucy who’s coming to dinner tonight, not Kevin.

Meanwhile, Kevin confronts T-Bone at the movie house. Saying he could have him arrested for conspiring to engage in statutory rape, he demands ID. T-Bone shows him a fake one, then admits he’s not eighteen but only fifteen. He apologizes, saying he’s been having some problems of his own and just wanted someone to talk to, and Lucy just happened to be available and desperate as well. Kevin doesn’t want T-Bone talking to the minister again, but is distracted by the George Foreman grill in the back of the booth. T-Bone says that he was hoping to share a cheese sandwich with Lucy. Kevin asks what kind of cheese. T-Bone says Longhorn cheddar. Kevin says he’s hungry and wants to talk some more.

Lucy shows up at the parsonage with Savannah. She wants to talk to her father about what happened at church. She apologizes for avoiding him at the office, the times she actually felt like showing up for work; as well as for what she said, and says she wanted to get back into the pulpit because she wanted to get over it but realized afterward she really had not. He says that she shouldn’t make such a big deal over her blowup but should try to move on, realizing what happened to her was just a step in her life and that it’s not the only thing that will ever happen to her. When Eric asks her about T-Bone, Lucy admits she did talk to him but he actually made her feel better, and admitted his real age to her. She thought it was funny that someone younger than her would lift her spirits. Eric then talks about his sons having fun with him, and the fact their teacher thinks he’s handsome made him feel better too. They sit down and have dinner.
