87th Precinct

Show FAQ
I see the name Even Hunter frequently in the credits of this guide. Who is he and what connection does he have with the show?
Evan Hunter was an author who wrote a total of 53 novels under the pen name Ed McBain about the detectives operating out of the fictional 87th Precinct in the fictional city of Isola. It was these novels on which the series was based.
Why was the series cancelled after only one season?
According to Norman Fell, the show got the axe from NBC when executive producer Hubbell Robinson took a consulting job with the programming department of network rival CBS. Since NBC didn't want to continue putting money into the pockets of someone who worked for a rival network they decided to cancel the series after only one season despite good reviews and decent ratings.
Why did Gena Rowlands appear in only four episodes?
Ms. Rowlands wanted a recurring contract so that she could be free to take other roles in Hollywood as well as take care of her children. Thus, she only made four appearances despite a public letter writing campaign to have her appear more often.
The name Gregory Walcott sounds familiar to me. Didn't he have something to do with Ed Wood?
Gregory Walcott was the hero of Ed Wood's notorious classic stink bomb, Plan 9 from Outer Space. Seemingly alone among the actors in that film, it did not destroy his career as he continued to find work for over three decades afterwards. Walcott made a cameo appearance in the 1994 film Ed Wood.
Is the series available on DVD?
Yes, the series was recently (2012) released in its entirety on DVD. It is available from many sources so check it out if you can.
How many of the 87 Precinct actors are still alive today?
Gregory Walcott, Ron Harper, and Gena Rowlands are still alive to the best of the editor's knowledge. Robert Lansing died in 1994 and Norman Fell passed away in 1998.
