	Cate Egan Hennessy, played by Katey Sagal Cate Hennessy is married to Paul and has her fair share with her three kids. When Paul dies, she must raise the kids alone until her father and cousin come in to help. She also has a few relationships towards the end of Season 2, and in Season 3, mainly with her childrens' principal, Ed Gibb.


	Grandpa Jim Egan [Episodes 40-76; special guest before that, 2004-05], played by James Garner Jim Egan is the father of Cate, and first appeared on the show after Paul passed away. Jim moves in full time to help Cate around the house and help her continue to raise her three children, and deal with their development to adulthood.


	Paul Hennessy [Episodes 1-31], played by John Ritter Paul Hennessy is the father of three and a columnist for the local paper. He was a sports columnist, but when his wife went back to work, he decided to stay home with the kids and write the Life Section. Paul loves his kids and his wife and keeps his family first...in most cases. Sadly, Paul died in Season 2 when he had a heart attack in a grocery store.
