The scene opens back in the sixties; where a man called Guy Hastings is shown working as one of the head guards on Alcatraz. Not only is he shown working as a guard, but he is also responsible for training all of the new guards who come to work on the island, he shown to be pretty proficient with his job and is thus entrusted with such a responsibility. He is shown to have a comfortable life with his wife and daughter living in the guard's apartments on the island. His wife is shown talking about how perfect their life is, which means that something terrible is about to happen, as they all seem too happy and content. Hastings then is shown meeting up with his new recruits, one of whom is Ray Archer. We then jump to present day and see Hastings in his old apartment all alone sans his family. ..

Cultural References
The medal that Diego Soto was fingering of Guy Hastings', as he described him as one of the "good guys", is the Navy Cross, 2nd highest military award for heroism in combat (awarded to US Navy, Coast Guard and United States Marine Corps personnel).
