Episode Notes

Quentin Tarantino is reportedly a hardcore fan of Alias. Rumors have it that he wanted to pay just to be on the show.

Originally, "The Box" was to be a single episode, but it was realized that it was going to be too long for one episode so extra material was added to fill out two episodes. Interestingly, something similar would later happen with Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill.

Sydney suggests she and Vaughn should go see the L.A Kings who "are in town next week" are playing the New York Islanders. This episode was aired January 20th 2002 and the Kings actually played the Islanders one night before this episode aired.

Episode Quotes

Weiss: (to Vaughn) You really want some space, or you and I are gonna get drunk? 'Cause there's this bar, you won't even remember it tomorrow.

McKenas Cole: But another part that sucks is seeing guys you worked with, guys you thought were tougher than deer jerky... tortured to death. That's no good.

McKenas Cole: You still got that room downstairs, right? The "conversation room"? But that's what you used to call it, right? The torture room's like you really got to admit what the hell it is you're going down there. So, Arvin. Let's go to the "conversation room"!

Sydney: I can't believe, of all things, we're saving SD-6.

McKenas Cole: Yyou give us the codes, I won't have to open the box which will be really excellent for you.
Sloane: I can't be the first person to have difficulty taking you seriously, can I?

McKenas Cole: (holding one 'needles of fire') Each one is like you took a bag of red jalapenos, threw them in a blender, and used them for an enema. And Arvin, you're about to get to know them.

Cultural References

Visual: "McTiernan Air Conditioning" van

The fake name on the van Cole and his men use is "McTiernan Air Conditioning", which is an in-joke reference to director John McTiernan, whose movie Die Hard shares a number of plot elements with this episode.

Sydney: (to Vaughn) You like hockey, right? With the Kings?

The Los Angeles Kings are a National Hockey League team Founded in 1967 and are based in Los Angeles, California.

Sydney: (refering to the Kings) They're playing the Islanders next week. We should go.

The New York Islanders are another National Hockey League team, founded between 1972-1973 and based in Uniondale, New York.

McKenas Cole: ...and I told them, "I'm just a kid from Redondo Beach running black ops for Uncle Sam! Get it? I'm an American citizen."

Uncle Sam is a synonym for America, particularly the United States government. It was originally the name of a cartoon character that was created in the early 1800s to represent the United States. There are several stories regarding its origin, but most believe that his name comes from a play on the abbreviation "U.S.".

Marshall: As luck would have it, I'm feeling kind of a-- a Stockholm Syndrome thing happening--

The Stockholm syndrome is a psychological state in which the victims of a kidnapping, or prisoners, develop a relationship with their captors and end up helping them to achieve their goals. This syndrome gained its named after the famous Norrmalmstorg robbery of Kreditbanken at Norrmalmstorg, Stockholm in 1973.
