Sydney has gone to Mount Subasio in Italy and, after scaling the mountain, defied the Rambaldi prophecy. Once she gets to the top she uses a satellite phone to call the FBI. She turns herself in.
When she returns to the US, Jack tells her that the CIA is still looking into the Prophecy, but they are also now searching for her mother, Laura Bristow. Jack confirms that a CIA investigation after Laura’s car crash concluded she escaped alive. Sloane was on the committee that investigated it and he had been keep the truth from Jack for many years.
Sydney is determined to find her mother. She meets with Sloane and asks for his help. She insists that she receive a leave of absence from SD-6. He agrees. The next day, to Sydney’s surprise, Sloane assigns her on a mission to retrieve information on Alexander Khasinau.
Sydney protests and says she was promised a leave of absence. Sloane explains that Khasinau was Laura Bristow’s superior in the KGB. Sydney is now looking forward to her mission, as it will bring her one step closer to finding her mother. She and Dixon are going to fly to Vienna to meet with a deep-cover agent who is stationed at the Russian embassy. The agent goes by the name Wexler and he has a microchip. The chip contains valuable information about Khasinau and his organization.
Sydney attends a masquerade ball wearing a mask. A masked man meets her; he whispers to her that Wexler is dead. They are both in jeopardy. They escape to a back room and take off their masks. The man is Noah Hicks, an SD-6 agent…whom Sydney dated when she first started at SD-6.
Together, they go to the basement and find Wexler’s body. Noah thinks he swallowed the microchip to make sure it stayed hidden. He cuts into Wexler’s stomach and takes the microchip from his body. The enemy agents are in pursuit of Noah and Sydney, so she and Dixon extract him from Vienna and escape back to the US.
On the flight back to the US, Sydney asks Noah why he left 5 years ago without saying good-bye to her. Their separation was a misunderstanding. Noah was being transferred and placed on a deep-cover assignment and wanted to meet with Sydney but she never got his message.
That night, Francie needs a coat so she borrows Sydney’s. She finds a plane ticket in the pocket…to Italy. Sydney told her she was flying to Seattle. She tells Will and they try to figure out what the ticket is for. Is she having an affair? Why would she lie to them? They decide to confront her about it when she returns home.
Jack, since learning that his wife is still alive, is furious, to say the least, that Sloane would keep the truth from him for such a long period of time. He goes to a local bar in the middle of the afternoon to try and drink away his problem, until Sydney finds him. She tells him that Devlin is ordering him to visit Dr. Barnett, the agency psychiatrist.
Unhappy but following his orders, Jack goes to see Dr. Barnett. She is very shrewd when judging Jack’s character. She doesn’t believe that he is being truthful to her…or himself. She decides they should meet once a week.
The microchip is analyzed at SD-6. Noah and Sydney are sent to the Arkhangelsk forest in Russia. There is an underground complex located below a ranger station. There is a computer with information about Khasinau’s organization. They are to break into the complex and steal the date-core from the computer. Sydney is going to use this opportunity to get background on her mother.
The data-core is kept in sub-zero conditions inside of a cryo-chamber. Sydney must put on a protective suit to obtain access to the core. During their attempt to steal the core, one of Khasinau’s men triggers a lever that activates a robotic arm inside the cryo-chamber. It knocks Sydney to the ground; the fall cracks her helmet. Noah must defeat the guard and get into the chamber before the sub-zero temperatures kill Sydney. Sydney and Noah barely make it out with the core and escape to a cabin. The cabin is an SD-6 safe house. They have a few hours before they will be rescued. During this time, Sydney and Noah realize that they have been apart for 5 years but their passion still lives…
