Franny hatches a plan to help her son Justin, an unpopular 16 year old high school student, find friends and improve his social status. The plan is to join the international exchange student program. The plan goes awry when the expected athletic Nordic teen fails to arrive and instead Raja Musharaff, a 16 year old Muslim from Pakistan joins the family.
Raja explains to a class that he's close to Justin, causing the entire school to tease them about being a couple. Horrified, Justin turns to Claire for help and she tells him to ignore Raja. But the strategy backfires when Raja befriends the geekiest kid at school, nicknamed "Small Paul," and Justin is completely alone. Meanwhile, when Claire decides to break up with Jeffrey, Gary gets involved.
When Franny has Raja join Justin's Rocket Club, Justin is forced to reveal to Raja that the club doesn't actually exist. Horrified to continue with the lie, Raja builds a rocket anyway, but when he tries to buy parts for it he's suspected of being a terrorist. Meanwhile, the cheerleading tryouts are not what Claire had expected.
Raja persuades a sexy girl in school to dress more modestly and concentrate on developing her mind. While working with Raja and the girl on a project, Justin begins to think she likes him. At home, Franny gives Gary a fashion makeover.
Gary, not wanting to tell his family that he was fired, tries to get the family to reduce spending. Raja, thinking he's a financial burden on the family, gets a job at a convenience store. Justin, Craig and Dooley visit Raja and learn that the parking lot at the store is where the cool kids hang out. However, things are disrupted when Raja doesn't sell alcohol to the kids with fake IDs.
It's Homecoming and Justin is serving on the Junior Float Committee since his idea for last year's float was a hit. However, when Raja questions Justin's idea for this year, the committee chooses Raja's idea instead. Meanwhile, Franny tries on Claire's dress and Gary finds the sight irresistible. But when he learns that the dress is Claire's, he forbids his daughter from wearing it.
Raja starts smoking due to stress from school exams. When Franny and Gary find out, it leads to them resuming their habit. Claire embarrasses Justin at school so he ignores her.
Claire talks Justin into becoming the school's mascot, but he experiences stage fright; Gary struggles to find work so spends his time at a local hardware store and even helps out the customers.
Justin and Raja feel guilty after carrying out the annual junior-class school prank. Meanwhile, Gary searches for a job, Franny sells things over the internet from the household and Claire feels a bond with a herd of alpaca after being left in charge of them.
Franny decides the Tolchuks should resume church services again after Raja has doubts about their spirituality over the Christmas holiday. Justin uses the power of prayer in an attempt to have sex with a pretty girl in his school.
Justin finds himself being preyed on by the school bully, Trey, and makes up a story about Franny being in a coma to win Trey's sympathy. Raja objects to the lie, until he finds himself a target of Trey's actions as well. Meanwhile, Franny has an automobile accident, and Gary has a little accident of his own.
Justin's lack of career direction leads him to decide to be a stay at home dad. Gary is troubled by this and decides to take Justin and Raja hunting in an attempt to sway Justin in a more macho direction. Franny and Claire's argument reaches a climax at a local nightclub.
Justin decides to try out for a part in a local play when he discovers a pretty girl has the starring role. Claire volunteers for a teen hotline and fails miserably, so Raja decides to call in to help her.
The Tolchuk's decide to go on vacation, but Raja's need to say his prayers at the airport leads to problems with security. Raja is upset with the Tolchuk's insensitive reaction to his plight, so he decides to seek new sponsors.
Raja befriends Mindy, a girl that is avoided by everyone in her class. Raja soon learns why however, when he learns she thinks she is in love with him, and he tries to let her down easy by playing the religion card. Gary and Franny meet their new neighbors who seem perfect, until they reveal some shocking news.
When Justin's class is assigned to read the book "Madame Bovery," his mother insists that all smutty books be banned from the schools. Also, Justin's parents learn of his new talent, drawing nude women.
Raja goes against tradition when he chooses Justin as his mock victim for the school's annual Students Against Drunk Driving campaign instead of the school's most popular student.
Raja's interest is a local Muslim girl brings out the matchmaker in Frannie. When Justin is made fun of as the last child to have a girlfriend, he decides to go out with a strange girl that worships him.
