Cultural References
Visual: Haley ripping the book Superfudge in half.

“Superfudge” is a book by Judy Blume (1938-) first published in 1980.
It is a direct sequel to her book “Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing”.

Visual: Haley climbing the model Empire State Building.

This is a reference to the classic 1933 movie (& 2005 remake), “King Kong”, complete with the biplanes and a small doll representing the character “Ann Darrow” (played by Fay Wray (1907-2004) in the '33 version & Naomi Watts (1968-) in the '05 version).

Steve: “...Here's a Katie, and this must be Tom. You're crazy! Let her have a cell phone!”

This is a reference to Katie Holmes (1978-) & Tom Cruise (1962-) and their 2006 marriage.
It's a running joke in comedy circles he's very controlling and doesn't let Katie have any freedoms.
