Finalists Compete - Recap

The show opens with the judges telling about how the proceeds of the downloads of tonight’s performances are going to be going to the tradgedy in Japan. Afterward, Ryan introduces the Top 12: Casey Abrams, Lauren Alaina, James Durbin, Thia Megia, Haley Reinhart, Karen Rodriguez, Pia Toscano, Jacob Lusk, Scotty McCreery, Paul McDonald, Stefano Langone and Naima Adedapo. All are up to show that they have what it takes to make it through to the next stage of the competition.

Naima Adedapo is up first and they take a look at her childhood. Tonight she is going to sing Tina Turner’s “What’s Love Got To Do With It”. She comes out and sings the song. It is not as powerful as it is supposed to be. Steven says that she did a great job to it. Jennifer says that last week she gave her a pass last week, but she has been pitchy through the song. Randy says that the vocals are all over the place and it needs to be improved. Naima says that the song felt good to her and respects the judges comments.

Paul McDonald is next and they talk about how he became to have his talent. He is going to be singing Elton John’s “I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues”. He comes out on stage and dances his signature dance moves. Jennifer says that she heard him struggling. Randy says that he was pitchy, but he has the talent to be better. Steven says that he loves the swagger and has the makings of a great performer.

Thia Megia is up next and she tells about how she wrote her first song at 6-years-old. She is going to sing Vanessa William’s “Colors of the Wind”. She comes out on stage and she is pitch perfect in her delivery. Randy says that it was alright and says that the problem is that Thia has been singing the ballads and there was nothing new. Steven says that she sang it beautiful and asks if it is who she is and Thia says that she is not just a ballad singer. Jennifer says that the songs are safe and she says that she has to push out of the box and kill it next week.

Next is James Durbin and they show a little bit of his life and he tells that he is going to be singing Bon Jovi’s “I’ll Be There For You”. He comes out on stage an is sporting the tail again. He shows off his high vocals and wows the judges and audience. Steven asks how he does that and tells him not to go too “Poppy” on him. James says that he is saving the Aerosmith for the Finale. Jennifer says that she loves it when he gets on the stage and it was good. Randy says that he did the song justice and loved it when he made it his own. Steven says that he will perform with James if he makes it through to the finals.

Haley Reinhart is up now and she talks about her childhood and talks about how her parents are wonderful musicians. Singing “I’m Your Baby Tonight”, Haley gets on stage and she shows her jazzy voice and does alright. Jennifer says that she looks beautiful and says that she hears an amazing voice, but she is still tense in her movements. She says that she needs to naturally move. Ryan goes up to Haley and helps her clean up the makeup. Randy says that he is not sure what type of performer she is and is confused. Steven says that it was sweet and tough and they want to hear more blues.

Next is Stefano Langone and he talks about how his grandfather started Langone’s Music and he is singing Simply Red’s “If You Don’t Know Me By Now”. He enters the stage and puts his own style to the song and hits the long note at the end. Randy says that he got the best performance of the night with hot vocals. Steven says that it was really wonderful and over the top. Jennifer says that he could take this thing if he connects more with the audience. Stefano gives his mom a hug before walking off the stage.

Pia Toscano is next and she tells that she gets her inspiration from her grandfather, who passed away. She tells that she has been singing for a while. Tonight she is going to sing “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” by Whitney Houston. She comes out gives an amazing performance as always. Steven says that she took the song over the top and it was great. Jennifer was glad to hear something upbeat. Randy says that she brings it every week and Pia is going to win it if the competition doesn’t pick up. Steven tells that she did a fantastic job with the song.

Scotty McCreery is up and his parents tell that he was a chubby baby and has always been singing and impersonating Elvis. Tonight he says that he is going to sing “Can I Trust You With My Heart” by Travis Tritt. He comes out and sticks to his deep voice singing, but changes it up when he holds the higher note for a while. Jennifer says that he pushed it out there and she says that he is growing. Randy says that he did Travis Tritt proud and loved it. Steven says that he is going to go places with what he is doing.

Karen Rodriquez is up now and she tells that she gets her music from her mother and she is going to sing “Love Will Leave You Back” tonight. She enters the stage and she sings and shows that she wants to stay in the competition. She mixes in Spanish toward the end of the song. Randy says that it started a little rough and says that it was better than last week. Steven says that she lets out her ethnic “Whatitisness” and loved it. Jennifer says that she sings beautifully and it was good.

Up next to sing is Casey Abrams and he tells that his parents had him late when his mom was 40 years old. He says that he is going to do a risky song and sing “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana. Jimmy tells him that no one has ever done Nirvana on the American Idol stage before. He comes out on stage and it is good. Steven says that he is so crazy and talented and he’s got it. Jennifer says that it was a risk and says that it was a little screechy. Randy says that he loves that he takes risks and says that it wasn’t his best, but it was good.

Lauren Alaina is next and she has the Flu. She gives Ryan a mask. They take a look at her childhood and her parents tell that she has always been the center of attention. Tonight she is going to be singing “I’m The Only One” by Mellissa Ethridge. She comes out on stage and despite having the flu, she is really good. Jennifer says that she made it her own and did a great job. Randy says that it was great and says that she should have a cold every week. Steven says that she did a great job.

Last up to perform is Jacob Lusk and his mom says that Jacob gets his music from her and Jacob tells that he doesn’t and that his mother cannot sing at all. Tonight he is going to sing “Alone” by Heart to change it up from the Gospel, but still give it his “Lusky Stank” on it. He comes out and performs it really well. Randy says that it was a very nice performance. He loved the end and says that he is in it to win it. Randy says that Jacob’s mom gave him the confidence. Jennifer says that it was so amazing and they say that they have a hot competition. The performers have done what they can. Who will survive the cut?
