Finalists Compete - Recap

With Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo eliminated from the competition, Casey Abrams, Lauren Alaina, James Durbin, Haley Reinhart, Pia Toscano, Jacob Lusk, Scotty McCreery, Paul McDonald, and Stefano Langone sing tonight to show that they have what it takes to be the next American Idol. The show kicks off with Ryan coming out and says that it is Rock and Roll week. They show a video of Steven Tyler introducing what Rock and Roll means. The Top 9 come out with smiling faces. Jimmy Ivine and Will I.Am is helping out tonight to get them to where they need to be in the song.

Jacob Lusk is up and Jimmy and Will want him to sing “Let’s Get it On”, but Jacob says that is not him and that he is going to sing “Man in the Mirror” by Michael Jackson. He comes out and has some issue with his ear buds and removes them. This doesn’t hinder his performance and he sings the song great. Steven allows the backup singer, Sarita, to take a bow and says that she wrote that song originally. Steven says that it was beautiful and he loved it. Jennifer says that he makes everyone feel good. A catcall “I love you” screams out. Jennifer says that he is great. Randy appreciates that Jacob stood up for his morals and says that he was worried about the song, but says that it was hot.

Haley Reinhart is next and this week she is going to sing “Take another Piece of My Heart” by Janis Joplin. Jimmy and Will help her out and say that she was born to sing the song. She comes out and her growly voice is powerful throughout the song. Jennifer says that they are showing everyone that she is a contender and she says that if she keeps going on like that, she is going to be around. Randy says that she showed her bluesy side and it was great. Steven says that she nailed it and that she was great.

Casey is up and originally he was going to sing “Every Little Thing You Do is Magic”, but felt that he wanted more. He decide to sing “Have you ever Seen the Rain” by Creedence Clearwater Revival instead. He comes out with the Bass and it is amazing how he has improved. Randy says that he made CCR proud and did justice to the song and Casey is making Upright Bass cool. Steven says that he is a true musician and every time he sings, he brings something different. Jennifer says that she is paying top dollar to be in the front row. Ryan asks if he puts pressure on himself and he says that he feels that he has to bring 150% to the table to make the judges proud.

Up next is Lauren Alaina and she says that she wants to impress by singing “Natural Woman” by Aretha Franklin. She gets pointers by Will I.Am and Jimmy. She comes out and sings the song safely, but it had bite to it. Steven says that she has brought it up. Jennifer says that she is amazing. Randy says that Lauren has picked the hardest song. He says that she did a great job. Ryan asks if it felt natural to sing that and she says that it was fun on the stage and that it felt natural.

James Durbin is up and he is slowing things down despite what Jimmy and Will I.Am says. He is singing “While My Guitar Gentle Weeps”. He comes out and blows it out of the water. Jennifer says that it is nice seeing the other side and it worked. She says that she loved it. Randy says that he loved to see the sensitive side and says that in order to be an artist, he has to take the chances. He says that he won tonight. Steven says that it is a proud moment and that he showed his emotion. Ryan asks who he was thinking of and he tells that he was thinking of his family.

Next is Scotty McCreery and tonight he is going to sing “That’s Alright Mama” by Elvis Presley. He gets into the studio with Jimmy and Will and gets right into it. They tell that he is going to have fun with it. He comes out and he shows a different side of himself that he has been keeping hidden. After the song, a bunch of girls run up on stage and hug Scotty. Ryan asks what that was about. Randy says that it is a new Scotty and says that he is in it to win it. Steven says that he did it well and brought Elvis back. Jennifer says that she loves it and asks if he has been watching rap because he had flavor.

Pia Toscano is next and she is going to sing “River Deep Mountain High” by Tina Turner.
She comes out and proves that she can sing up tempo songs with ease. Steven says that she killed it and that there are a million guys in a million bars drinking to her. Jennifer says that she is going to push her more and says that she spectacular and tells that she needs to keep studying. Randy says that everyone is talented and says that she showed that he knew that she could do it and says that she is in it to win it.

Stefano Langone is up and he is going to be singing “When a Man Loves a Woman”. Jimmy and Will help him out and give him some pointers about pausing for a moment before delivering the other words. He comes out and has power in is voice. Jennifer says that she knew he had it in him and says that it was beautiful. She says that it had another layer in it. Randy says that he wasn’t jumping up and down because he can take his time, but he wanted to do more with it. Steven says that he liked the old timing and says that he has a great range and to keep playing with it. He says that he sang with a lot of passion.

Last of the night is Paul McDonald and he is singing “Fulsome Prison Blues”. In the studio, Jimmy and Will tell Paul that he is going to have to go crazy with the song because that was how Johnny Cash performed it. He comes out and gets the crowd involved and asks a little crazy on the stage. Randy says that he has three words. “I loved it!” he says. Steven says that he loved it too and says that he rocked the house. Jennifer says that he rocked it and it was amazing. The singers have sung and now it is up to America to put their favorites through for another week.
