Another round of auditions kicks off and this week they are in Chicago! Judges Randy Jackson, Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carrey and Keith Urban make their way to the judging seats. The contestants are excited to be able to perform in front of them. As the day starts, the contestants get restless.
First up for the day is Mackenzie Wasner, 17, from Leiper’s Fork, TN. She says that she has been singing since Kindergarten and that her father was a pianist for Vince Gill. She sings and the judges like her voice. Mariah says that she loved her voice and says that there is some star power there. Nicki says that she blew her mind and says that she is a star. Randy says that she has a huge road ahead of her. Keith says that she has a great tone to her voice. They vote and it is no question. She makes it through with all four judges saying yes to her.
After Audtin Earles, 19, from Lakeview, MI makes Mariah cringe at his version of one of her songs, the next contestant is Kiara Lanier, 21, from Chicago, IL. She says that she sang at President Obama’s Birthday fundraiser. She comes in and says that she is a fan of Mariah’s and that it is an honor to sing in front of her. The judges are really impressed with her voice. Nicki says that she has so much control. Randy says that he was really impressed. Mariah says that she loved how she went from loud to soft. Keith says that her runs were really great. They vote and it is a yes from everyone. She gets her golden ticket.
Stephanie Schimel, 20, from Milwaukee, WI, Mariah says that was a great choice of song and it was great. Keith says that he loved it and says that it is her whole light. Nicki says that nothing jumped out at her. Randy says that she is really talented and they vote her through to Hollywood. Nicki and Mariah bicker back and forth for a bit and Randy and Keith tell Stephanie to run. The bickering continues as contestants audition.
Next up is Melissa Bush, 27, from Grandville, MI. She is dressed in a superhero costume. She comes up to the judges and gives Randy a t-shirt that says “Get Down Dawg!”. She sings and the judges are not impressed with it. They are lost for words and it is clear that it is a no. They tell her that they are sorry, but it is going to have to be a no.
Up next is Gabe Brown, 21, from Marion, IA. He was chosen from the Idol Bus Tour. He comes in with cookies for the judges. He starts to sing and he impresses the judges. Mariah asks him if he can sing something mellower. Randy says that he is really great. Nicki says that the Rock voice is truthful. Keith says that he loved it and says that he doesn’t even need a microphone.
Next up is Kevin Nabity, 25, from Polk City, IA. He says that he loves “Ninja Rap” from the Ninja Turtles and that he knows martial arts. When he gets into the judges’ room, Nicky asks him to show them his moves and it is clear that they do not like it. He starts to sing fast and Randy says that he sounds like he was at an auction. Nicky tells him to sing another song and it is just as bad. They are sure that this is not good and tell him that he shouldn’t sing. They vote and he doesn’t get his ticket.
After the judges deliver the bad news to several contestants, the next up to perform is Isabelle Parell, 15, from Centerton, IN. She has Keith sing the refrain of the song she sings and the judges like it. Keith says that it was great and says that the note says a thank you to Keith and a smiley face. Mariah says that she has a sweet quality to her. Nicki says that she loved the tone and attitude. Keith says that he liked her. They vote and it is a yes from 3 of the 4 judges and is through to Hollywood.
Keith is absent in the next round of contestants and Nicki is a big flirt with them. The next contestant, Griffin Peterson, 22, from Oconomowoc, WI, comes in and Nicki asks him if he has a girlfriend and says that she doesn’t discriminate. He sings and the judges like it. Nicki says that he has a nice look and voice. Randy says that he doesn’t get it. Mariah says that she sees the potential and says that she likes him. He gets through to the next round of the competition.
Next up is Curtis Finch Jr., 24, from St. Louis, MO. He says that he wants this to go well for him. He sings and the judges are amazed by his voice. Nicki tells him that he is blessed. Randy says that it is easy for him. They vote and it is an easy yes.
Up next is Mariah Pulice, 19, from Darien, IL. She says that she is recovering from Anarexia and that she, since J.R. High, had a problem. However, now that she is better, she won’t allow this to beat her. She sings and the judges are touched. Nicki says that her spirit is coming out of her and says that she has a great voice. Randy says that she sounded great and he loved it. Mariah says that she touched her and says that she is proud of what she is doing. They vote and it is a yes from all the judges. Her family runs in and makes the judges get emotional.
The next day of the auditions kick off in Chicago and Keith is back. First up for the day is Brandy Neely, 17, from Louisville, KY. She says that she has been a fighter all her life and that she was adopted by her aunt when she was a baby. She comes up and sings. The judges are impressed. Keith says that was a great song choice and says that it was terrific. Nicki says that she loved it and says that she had so much control. Mariah says that she loved it too and says that it is nice to hear a good song. Randy says that it was great. They vote her through to the next round.
Next up is Josh Holiday, 24, from Celeste, TX. He sings and Randy says that he likes his voice and says that he has a lot going on there. Nicki says that the tone’s amazing and says that he is going to be able to do a lot with it. They vote and it is an easy yes from all four of the judges. The talent continues to impress as Courtney Williams, 18, from Greensville, MS and Andrew Jones, 28, from Chicago, IL show that they have what it takes and get their ticket to Hollywood.
Up next is Clifton Duffin, 22, from Country Club Hills, IL. He says that his family has never heard him sing before. His mom and dad watch as he sings. His singing impresses the judges. Nicki says that the singing was great and says that it was inspirational. Mariah says that she can relate because she sang away from people. Keith says that it is raw talent and says that it is great to see the relationship between him and his family. They vote and it is a yes from all the judges.
Next up is Ieisha Cotton, 19, from Chicago, IL. She says that Mariah is her Idol and that she is a professional dancer. Keith has her dance and she isn’t that bad. She sings and it is not as good as her dancing. Mariah says that she wants to stay with the dancing. Randy says that she is tone deaf and that the singing is not for her. They vote and it is a no from them.
Johnny Keyser, 23, from Pompano Beach, FL is next and he is a repeat contestant from Season 11. He sings and the judges like what they hear. Keith says that it was great and says that he liked it. Randy says that hopefully he has done what he needs to do to get further. Mariah says that she liked it and says that it was great. Nicki says that she liked it and says that he was great. They vote and he gets a second chance at Hollywood.
Next up is Kez Ban, 27, from Durham, NC. She is a fire performer and songwriter. She is particularly strange and sings “I’ve Got No Strings” from Pinocchio. She is odd, but the judges are impressed. Randy says that is really interesting. Mariah says that she could feel the realness in her and says that it was a great. Nicki says that she believes her and wants to pay to go to the show. Keith says that he likes her voice a lot. They vote and it is a yes.
Next up is Ashley Curry, 19, from Flossmoor, IL. She says that she has a twin sister and this is to separate her from her. She goes into the judges’ room and she tells them that she studies Musical Theater. She is totally over-singing it. Randy says that the sound was off. Nicki says that if she had the vocal cords, she could do more. She tries to sing again and Mariah walks away for a minute. Randy tells her that it is a no. They vote despite her trying to sing over them. They say no and she gets escorted out.
Last up for the night is Lazaro Arbos, 21, from Naples, FL. He comes in stuttering really bad. He says that he was stuttering from the age of six and it has affected his life. He starts to sing and the judges are amazed. Randy says that it was very pleasant and says that it is amazing that the stuttering doesn’t happen when he sings. Nicki says that he is amazing. Keith says that it is beautiful and says that it was his favorite song. Mariah says that she loved it. That is all for Chicago and in total, 46 contestants are going to Hollywood.
