Auditions #4: New Orleans - Recap

The auditions continue in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Judges Randy Jackson, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and Mariah Carrey come in and talk to the contestants waiting. It is good to be back into his hometown. Mariah gives him a make-up touch-up.

The first contestant is Megan Miller, 22, from Ethel, LA. She is Miss Greater Baton Rouge and she got into an accident 3 days ago. She needs to have surgery and told the doctors that she can’t miss her audition. She sings and afterward, Randy says that she is a natural and says that she can sing. Nicki says that she is a superstar. She says that this condition didn’t affect her. Mariah says that she has a great quality to her. Keith says that she went at it and says that it was great. They vote with a yes around the table.

Next up is Charlie Askew, 17, from Little Rock, AR. He says that he is not popular, but singing has helped him communicate and says that it is a great outlet. He sings and the judges are surprised. Nicki says that she was pleasantly surprise. Nicki says that she likes his spirit. Randy says that he is seemingly dark and says that it is interesting. Keith says that he loves his voice and says that it is his own thing. Mariah says that she can identify with him on how he uses music as an escape and says that he has an incredible voice. They vote and he makes it through to Hollywood.

Up next is another nominee from a relative. Maddie Assel, 17, from Centreville, VA gets her ticket from Randy and the next day, she comes into the audition. She sings and afterward, Keith says that she has a style and says that she doesn’t sound like anyone and he likes it. Nicki says that she has some power in her voice. Mariah says that she likes her confidence up there. The judges vote and she gets her golden ticket.

After a round of bad auditions, next to hopefully turn things around is Paul Jolley, 22, from Palmersville, TN. He says that his Grandpa passed away recently and says that he taught him to give back. He comes up to the judges and sings. Afterward, Nicki says that his voice is really pretty and says that he has a clear ability to play with the voice. Mariah says that she liked it and says that it felt effortless. Keith says that it was a great, honest performance. They vote and Paul makes it into Hollywood.

Next up is Chris “Mushroom” Barthel, 24, from Metairie, LA. He says that he is there to bring the fun into the competition. He sings and it is not good vocally, but the judges laugh at his personality. Keith says that he is a fun guy, He says that he doesn’t think that singing is his thing. Mariah says that she agrees with Keith. Nicki asks to run her fingers through his hair. It is a no for him to Hollywood, but he is happy.

Up next is Dr. Calvin Peters, 27, from Fort Worth, TX. He is a medical doctor working at the VA Hospital. He says that he rediscovered his love for music. He sings and the judges like it. Mariah says that he is handsome and that it is unique that he is a singing doctor. Keith says that he loves his vibe. Nicki says that he has a lot more technique than those put through to Hollywood. They vote and he gets through to the next round of the competition.

The talent keeps coming as Michelle Montezeri, 19, from Orlando, FL, Breanna Steer, 18, from Laplace, LA and Brandy Hotard, 26, from Port Allen, LA show off their pipes and they get their tickets to the next round in Hollywood. They celebrate with their families.

Next up is Dustin Watts, 27, from Albany, LA. He is a fireman. He says that he wants to have this work out. He comes up and sings. Afterward, Mariah says that she liked him and says that it was great. Keith says that he liked it and says that it was really good. Nicki says that she really liked him and says that she loved his voice. They give him his ticket to Hollywood. He goes to the fire station and tells the rest of the firemen.

The last up for the night is Burnell Taylor, 19, from New Orleans, LA. He says that he grew up in a musical home. He says that he discovered his voice after Katrina. He sings and the judges give him a standing ovation. Mariah says that he made her cry and says that the tone is amazing. She says that she felt every word he sang. Nicki says that is what they came for and says that she is happy that he did that. Randy says that was an amazing voice. Keith says that was a killer voice. They give him his ticket to Hollywood. That is it for Louisiana. In total, 34 tickets were handed out in Louisiana. Next stop, San Antonio, Texas!
