Top 10 Male Semifinalists Perform Live - Recap

The LIVE shows continue as the Top 10 Males perform tonight as the judges Randy Jackson, Nicki Minaj, Keith Urban and Mariah Carey are only sitting as critics. They talk about the night before and Randy says that they are professionals and have to call it how they see it. Keith says that the real artist will not take what they hear about someone else. Performing tonight are: Elijah Liu, Cortez Shaw, Charlie Askew, Nick Boddington, Burnell Taylor, Paul Jolley, Lazaro Arbos, Curtis Finch, JR., Devin Velez and Vincent Powell. With only 5 spots remaining in the Top 10, the night begins.

Elijah Liu is up first for the night and says that he needs to put his heart into it and says that he is single and available. He comes out and sings. Afterward, Keith says that first of all, he loved the song and it showed really good control. Nicki says that she’d be willing to stay and says that she liked it. She says that she likes how he stayed committed. Randy says that he is current and marketable, but it stayed in first gear and didn’t go anywhere. Mariah says that this was one of his better performances. She says that it didn’t get explosive in the end, but she says that his relevancy is the selling point.

Cortez Shaw is next. He says that last week was great, but he could have done better. He says that he needs to tap into the emotion this time. He comes out and sings. Afterward, Keith says that he loves his voice and says that he loved the spirit, but it didn’t fit him. Nicki says that he enjoyed it, but whoever is styling Elijah should style him. She says that his charisma came out, but says that it felt like he was straining. Randy says that it did sound like he was straining and was not sure if he is there yet. Mariah says she was like it was good to hear an up-tempo song. She says that it should have been brought down a bit though.

Charlie Askew is up next. He says that he got lost in the show and says that he has been growing a mustache for a year. He says that tonight is going to be the night. He comes out and sings. Afterward, Keith says that he wish I knew what people are saying now. He says that he has a huge range and he says that he sees him in a band. He says that it felt the most disconnected. Nicki says that she doesn’t know what happened. She wants her cute cuddly Charlie back. Randy says that he is worried for him because the song was terrible and the end of it was a scream. Mariah says that it seems that he likes the Classic Rock songs and says that he adds diversity of the group. Charlie says that he smiles all the time because he feels that he has to.

Nick Boddington is next. He says that he had no idea that he was going to make it or not and says that he needs to connect to the music. He wants to impress. He comes out and sings. Afterward, Keith says that was a perfect song choice and says that this moment there were some issues, but he heard him through that. He says that it was beautiful. Nicki says that she wanted to hear the original a bit more. She says that the piano is his comfort zone and says that it was still good. Randy says that he doesn’t know if it is his strongest, but it was still good. He says that it was a good solid performance. Mariah says that it was sort of unfair because he really kicked in at the end. She says that there were so many other performances were better.

Burnell Taylor in up next. He says that he felt that he did an amazing job last week and says that he is going to pull everything out and not hold back. He comes out and sings. Afterward, Keith gives him a standing ovation and says that when he says that he is thankful, he believes it. He says that his voice is unique and strong. Nicki says that she loves him and says that he is one of a kind and was born to do this. She says that people vote for him. Randy says that he loved when he first sang, the urgency in the voice caught him. Mariah says that it was a tearful moment because she was waiting to hear that emotion again.

Paul Jolley is next up and he says that he thought that he was going home until Jimmy saved him. He says that he is going out and having a great time. He comes out and sings. Afterward, Keith asks him what his wheelhouse is and he says that it is Country Rock. Keith says that for him, he still uses theatricals to mix in there. He says that he has the ability to lay back. Nicki says that was an odd comment. She says that it was a solid performance and says that she loves hearing Keith critique and says that he should pay attention to him. Randy says that the beginning was amazing, but when he got to the sweet spot, he changes his tone. Mariah says that it is interesting and says that he has a strong voice and says that she agrees that Keith is the expert on the genre. She say that the crowd enjoyed it.

Lazaro Arbos is up next. He says that there are a lot of kids reaching out to him and he says that it is always good to be yourself in this moment. He comes out and sings. Afterward, Keith says that was really good tonight and says that everyone connects with him. Nicki says that she loved it and loves him. She says that it was a strong vocal. Randy says that he is in it to win it and says that was great. Mariah says that she is always impressed how he throws himself in the song and says that people are going to love him and who he represents. The song was a bit too low for him though.

Curtis Finch, JR. is next. He says that his Sudden Death round was epic and amazing. He says that he is ready to keep running. He comes out and sings. Afterward, he gets a standing ovation. Keith says that he believe he can fly and says that he just oozes everything great. Nicki says that the bar is raised every time and says that it is bigger than Idol. She says that he has a calling in his life and hopes that he makes that kind of album. Randy says that was an amazing song and says that the competition started now. Mariah says that she needs to thank him for that and says that she needed.

Devin Velez is up next. He says that his last performance was great and says that she feels like he is back to his roots when he sings in Spanish. He comes out and sings. Afterward, Keith says that the very beginning was shaky, but once he found his zone, he is such a good singer. Nicki says that it was great and says congratulations for stepping into his own. Randy says that his tone is one that he really likes and says that it is effortless. Mariah says that performance was incredible and says that this is pretty much new to him and he is doing it effortlessly. He can reach an International audience too.

Vincent Powell is last up for the night. He says that he loved the judges comments last week and says that he needs to bring it tonight. He comes out and sings. Afterward, Keith says that nerves got on top of his talent tonight. Nicki says that he wasn’t sitting on it tonight and says that it was a great voice, but the song choice wasn’t good. Randy says that it was still good, even though he wasn’t right on. Mariah says that for her, it was beyond and wants America to vote for him. That’s it for the performances! Tomorrow the Top 10 will be revealed.
