With Paul Jolley out of the competition, the Top 8: Burnell Taylor, Devin Valez, Lazaro Arbos, Janelle Arthur, Candice Glover, Angie Miller, Amber Holcomb and Kree Harrison take to the stage. Tonight, they are singing the Songs of Detroit. Ryan Seacrest comes out and welcomes the judges and crowd. The idols got to meet Smokey Robinson with Jimmy.
First up is Candice Glover. She meets with Smokey Robinson and he tells her that her performance made him cry. She is going to sing “I Heard It Through The Grapevine” by Marvin Gaye. He likes the blues influence, but she needs to hit the beat a bit more. She comes out and sings. Afterwards, Keith says that was fantastic and says that he loved by the time she got the second verse, she brought it. The whole thing in the end was great too. Nicki says that her eyes were alive through the entire performance and says that it was great to show her Rocky Blusey side. Randy says that she was so confident and says that she has one of the best voices in the competition. Mariah says that she epidermises what this competition is. Tonight it was her giving the people the soulful blues.
Kree Harrison and Janelle Arthur come out for the first group performance of the night. They sing “Like A Prayer” by Madonna. Afterwards, Nicki says that she is excited that they did a song together, but says that Kree was calm and reserved while Janelle pushed too hard. Randy says that is a tough song to sing, but says that Janelle’s pitch was off. Mariah says that this was a Sisterhood moment and says that was admirable. Keith says that the song worked well and says that they both have different voices.
Next up is Lazaro Arbos. He meets with Smokey Robinson and he says that he is going to sing “For Once In My Life” by Stevie Wonder. Jimmy and Smokey tell him that it sounds like he is more comfortable with this one. He says that he likes this song. He comes out and sings. Afterwards, Randy says that he thinks that last week they were a little rough on him, but says that this was far better than last week. Mariah says that she agrees with the pitch problems, but says that the song was more in his register. She says that his courage was back and is happy for that. Keith says that Smokey’s advice about how it is good when it feels good. Nicki says that he is back and says that Smokey can be her Sugar Daddy and says that he did a great job not listening to Jimmy.
Up next is Janelle Arthur. She meets with Smokey Robinson and she says that she is going to sing “Keep Me Hanging On” by the Supremes. Smokey says that she needs to rise in the first part. Jimmy says that if she nails this, it will be good. She comes out and sings. Afterwards, Mariah says that was her at her finest and says that she just proved people wrong. Keith says that was beautiful and says that it was fearless. Nicki says that she shines when she has her guitar. She says that she is smiling more and says that her voice is not how it normally is. Randy says that he loved it and says that it was incredible. He says that she is in it to win it.
Next is Devin Velez. He meets with Smokey Robinson and says that he is going to sing “The Tracks Of My Tears” by The Miracles. Jimmy says that he is singing it behind the beat. He fixes it. He comes out and sings. Afterwards, Keith says that there were moments in that song where he relaxed into it. Nicki says that he is looking like a ripe banana and says that was an amazing job tonight. She says that it felt smooth. Randy says that he is back and says that this is one of his best performances. Mariah says that she was happy that he was going to sing this and says that it was flawless. Smokey tells him that he was awesome.
Candice Glover, Amber Holcomb and Angie Miller come out and sing “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” by the Supremes. Afterwards, they get a standing ovation. Mariah says that was so Pow and says that she loved it. She says that were moments and says that it was great.
Up next is Burnell Taylor. He meets with Smokey Robinson and tells him that he is singing “My Cherie Amour” by Stevie Wonder. Smokey says that he automatically has that soulful voice, but he strains in rehearsals. They have him pull back a bit. He comes out and sings. Afterwards, Nicki says that he reminded them of why they fell in love with his voice. He says that it is interesting and artsy to watch him. Randy says that he loves the choices and says that he doesn’t always have to do the runs. Mariah says that she loves to see him shinning and says that he did a great job with it. Keith says that he likes everything about that and says that he is so original.
Next is Angie Miller. She meets with Smokey Robinson and tells him that she is singing “Shop Around” by the Miracles. Smokey tells her that she can have fun for this and says that she doesn’t have to put that classical sound. She comes out and sings. Afterwards, Randy says that it was strange for him tonight and it is the first time it was a pitchy performance. Mariah says that she would have rather heard her at the piano and says that wants her to do the best she can. Keith says that he hears what Randy is saying and says that the melody kept pulling her down. However, her talent is undeniable. Nicki says that she thinks that she tried to show a different side of her that she shouldn’t be shown. She tells her that she does what she does great.
Up next is Amber Holcomb. She meets with Smokey Robinson and she tells him that she is singing “Lately” by Stevie Wonder. Smokey says that she needs to keep doing what she does. Smokey agrees that her being in the Bottom Three last week was ridiculous. She comes out and sings. Afterwards, she gets a standing ovation. Mariah says that was impeccable and says that she loved it. Keith says that she picked the right song and says that she felt it. He says that it was beautiful. Nicki says that was out of this world and says that it is really unmatched. Randy says that was the best vocal of the night.
Burnell Taylor, Devin Valez and Lazaro Arbos come out and sings “I Can’t Help Myself” by the Four Tops. Afterwards, Nicki says that it is a beautiful day in Hollywood Week and says that was horrible. They say that they didn’t know the words that well.
Last for the night is Kree Harrison. She meets with Smokey Robinson and she says that she is going to sing “Don’t Play That Song” by Aretha Franklin. She wants to bring some attitude. Smokey says that was the best for him. She comes out and sings. Afterwards, Randy says that she is one of the best in the competition. He says that she is here to stay. Mariah says that she commends her singing the song and says that she loves her. Keith says that she loves that she reminds the people of the blues and soul and says that it was great. Nicki says that she is always natural and organic. She says that she is a queen. That’s it for the performances!
