With Simon (possibly) going next year will American idol have the same power it has enjoyed over the last 8 seasons? Will viewers tune in ? Unless they improve the judges I think there's a possibility it could suffer.

No. Initially. Nothing can improve it.

I think it will hurt the show, but I think eventually they can find someone as good as Simon. There are plenty of clever, music-savvy people out there who have sass and can give the contestants an honest critique. And plenty who can provide the controversy that drives the tension between the judges. Probably they'll have to hire someone as a "transitional" judge for a season who will suck and who we'll all hate, then bring in someone who will look great in comparison.

I think the show will be OK without him. In the beginning, I feel like people watched the show just to hear what crazy comments Simon was going to make. However, that got pretty old after a few seasons, so I don't think the majority of those viewers even bother watching anymore.

I will miss Simon, though.

If what happened in the UK is anything to go on then when Simon quit Pop Idol to start the X Factor the show never returned. X Factor format is a 100% better than Pop Idol / American Idol.

I never watched the show on a regular basis, but I did enjoy the audition episodes specifically for Simon. The sad truth is, they should have either paid him an insane amount of money to keep him on, or cancelled the show along with his departure. Anyone that comes on to replace him will just be seen as a water downed Simon. The ratings were already taking a slight dip with Paula gone, now watch how far they'll dip with Simon gone.
