Angel, played by David Boreanaz

Angel, portrayed by David Boreanaz, is a vampire cursed with a soul by gypsies during the 1800s in Romania. Beforehand, he was Liam, a drunkard to his father and turned into a vampire by Darla in the 1700's. Then, he became Angelus, one of the worst vampires to walk the earth.

But now, Angel is in Los Angeles after being alongside his now ex-girlfriend Buffy in Sunnydale for three years. He came to make atonement for his past life by helping the helpless in Los Angeles. He formed Angel Investigations and tries to solve cases in the city.

Charles Gunn [S02-S05], played by J. August Richards

Charles Gunn portrayed by J August Richards is first introduced toward the end of season 1. We get the first impression that he will be different from the rest of the unified gang in that he has a past history in Los Angeles fighting for the good of his gang against the vampires that ravish his people.

Gunn is mostly a renegade vampire killer up until his character begins to mature with a relationship with Fred midway through season three. Their relationship is a prominent part of the series until they "both" kill a human man, which destroys their entire relationship. Gunn gets a makeover in season five when he gets an implant that gives him knowledge of the law and of demonic law. He goes from the casual man to the business man. This makeover proves deadly when his striving to be a different man ends up with him signing a paper to have Illyria brought to Wolfram & Hart that ultimately kills Fred. Gunn stands by Angel to the series finale where he is bleeding badly at the final battle scene.

Cordelia Chase [S01-S04], played by Charisma Carpenter

Cordelia, portrayed by Charisma Carpenter, is a quick witted character on Angel. She also comes to Los Angeles from Sunnydale after her disastrous graduation. She comes to be a better individual but soon finds Angel and becomes close to his mission in Los Angeles.

Her character grows from what we previously saw on Buffy the Vampire Slayer into a more mature character we see on Angel. She is similar to how she was on the sister show until her character matures as she learns more about the visions by the Powers-That-Be. Cordelia's body eventually starts to deteriorate in her brain as a human was not meant to bear the power of the visions. She agrees to keep the visions with being part demon in the meantime. She stands by Angel through it all and develops a small relationship with him in season three. The relationship was going to go to the next phase until the Powers intervened to take her to the Higher Plane and Angel was sent to the bottom of the sea by his own son.

Season four takes on a twist of its own when Cordelia returns with no memory of anything from the Higher Plane. She is seemingly herself despite having a illicit relationship with Angel's son and behaving slightly different than usual. It is discovered a higher being had hijacked Cordelia's body to use it as a vessel to "give birth to itself" allowing Jasmine to be born to make a kingdom on Earth. Cordelia goes in to a coma and is not seen again until the 100th episode where she wakes up to help Angel defeat Lindsey and get Angel back on track to who he really is instead of who he has become. Cordelia kisses Angel to pass the visions on to him then he gets a phone call from the hospital informing him that she had passed away.

Lorne [S02-S05], played by Andy Hallett

Lorne, played by Andy Hallett, first appeared on the series in Angel season two. He was the Host of a bar called Caritas. Humans and demons alike appeared to Lorne in his karaoke bar to sing so he could read their aura. Angel and others found this to be a great asset and came to Lorne to read more in to their futures.

Lorne's background unfolded toward the end of season two when they gang was sent to Pylea, Lorne's home dimension. Caritas was destroyed in season three, which brought Lorne into the Hyperion Hotel. Lorne tried several times to go out on his own but it always ended up in failure. Eventually, he was put in charge of the entertainment division of Wolfram & Hart. Lorne stood by the gang up until the final battle where he decided to call it quits.

Wesley Wyndham-Pryce, played by Alexis Denisof

Wesley, portrayed by Alexis Denisof, is a character we first met in the third season of Buffy. At that time, he was a clumsy watcher sent to replace Giles as Buffy's watcher.

In the first season of Angel, we first meet him and he has made a big change. He still has some of those clumsy traits, but tries to be more manly when it comes to fighting demons.

As the seasons progress, he matures as a character and becomes vital in the overall context of the series. He becomes more aggressive in season three after all his friends left him for not telling them about the Angel prophecy that he kept secret. With Wesley all alone, he develops a relationship with Lilah that ends in season four when Wesley returns to the team after they forgave him for his actions earlier.

Wesley gets a role in Wolfram & Hart which leads to him developing a relationship to Fred only to have her die at the hands of Illyria. Wesley mourns over Fred by standing with Illyria seemingly wanting Fred to come back to life. Wesley figures out that Angel had changed their memories not realizing it was involving Connor. Wesley assumes it has to do with Fred being dead so he shatters those memories releasing the past. Eventually, Wesley fights his last battle and dies in the series finale with the last scene being Wesley and "Fred" sharing a moment before he draws his last breath.

Winifred "Fred" Burkle/Illyria [S03-S05], played by Amy Acker

Fred portrayed by Amy Acker first appears at the end of Angel season two as someone who is completely disoriented because of her long existence in Pylea. When Angel and the gang bring her back to Los Angeles she becomes a part of the staff as the mathematical science mind of Angel Investigations throughout the continuation of the series.

Fred develops a relationship with Gunn in the later part of season three. This relationship is seemingly happy until Gunn kills a man for Fred when she really wanted to do it herself. Their relationship never repaired after that devastating moment. Fred continued to be a major part in the series through season four stepping up her role as a more leadership figure at times. Fred was the first one to realize Jasmine was not who she said she was in season five and almost died being the only one in the world knowing who Jasmine really was.

In season five, Fred is the head of the science department. She grows close to Spike at times trying to figure out how to help him. As the series progressed she grew close to Knox, which creates animosity with Wesley. Wesley and Fred eventually tie the knot and become a couple. Unknowing to them, Knox had helped bring Illyria here to infest Fred to kill her. There relationship was short lasting. As Illyria, she tries to be what she once was as an Old One, but can't only discovering her human vessel is about to destroy her. Wesley stops this by draining her power out enough to keep her alive. Illyria fights in the series finale alongside Angel.
