Arrested Development: The One Where They Build a House

As Michael's legal troubles continue, G.O.B. agrees to be the head of the company until Michael is in the clear. While Michael is pulling the strings in background, as G.O.B. and Michael planned, he begins to go crazy when G.O.B.'s ridiculous ideas impress the board. Meanwhile, the identity mishaps between George, Sr. and Oscar continue when George, Sr. is arrested in Mexico for a crime that Oscar committed, and Oscar takes George, Sr.'s place in a way that no one saw coming.

Episode Notes
On The Next Arrested Development Gag: Lindsay finds out the true identity of her homeless man, and even though Lindsay didn’t know who that was, hearing that he wasn’t homeless was good enough for her, and Lindsay, crushed and alone, for the first time missed her husband Tobias.

This episode is the first to feature the running gag of the Bluth family not being able to remember Ann's name. In this episode they call her "Egg".

Episode Quotes
Lucille: I want you out of the house.
Oscar: Oh, I want you everywhere.

Lucille: You're building a house. I want you to give it to him.
Michael: It's not a real house.
Lucille: Perfect, he's not a real man.

Buster: They're taking me in the army. They didn't think there was enough wrong with me.
Lucille: Well, did they check everything?
Buster: Yes! They even touched my Charlie Browns.

Michael: Okay, we’ve all made some sacrifices to be here, but we all want the same thing.
Oscar: I want to live here.
George Michael: I want to buy Ann some diamond dust.
Buster: I’m just hoping to get mildly injured so I can get out of the Army.
Michael: Bottom line is, we’ve got two weeks to build a house. Doesn’t have to be good, just has to look good.
Tom Jane: I just want my kids back.

George Michael: Oh, wow. Hey, can I bring Ann?
Michael: Who?
George Michael: Ann. You know, she’s ... she’s the girl I’m kind of hanging out with.
Michael: I haven’t met Ann.
George Michael: Yes, you have.
Narrator: Michael had met Ann.
George Michael: You let her in. See, that’s ... that’s her right over there.
Michael: Oh, Ann. Yes, yes, yes, yes. I know Ann. Hey, you! She’s got a little hard-boiled egg going there?
George Michael: Oh, it’s so cute. She sometimes takes a little pack of mayonnaise, and she’ll squirt it in her mouth all over, and then she’ll take an egg and kind of ... mmm! She calls it a “mayonegg.” Are you okay?

Tobias: It is not a competition, Lindsay. We are doing this to save our marriage. But I should be telling you that I have been meeting more than my fair share of groupies. Or should I say “blue-pies”?

Michael: George Michael, I’m sure that Egg is a very nice person. I just don’t want you spending all your money --
George Michael: Ann.
Michael: -- getting her all glittered up for Easter, you know?

Michael: (to G.O.B.) Get rid of the Seaward.
Lucille: I’ll leave when I’m good and ready.

Buster: Mother? Mother, what’s going...? I heard zoo noises.

Buster: ...hole in my heart. I’ve never opened my eyes underwater. My, um ... (whispers) genital area ... (normal voice) is shaped like a ... (whispers) lobster tail, ... (normal voice) but without its shell. Uh, oh, I guess I have the panic attacks under control. Oh, and I’m legally blind at night.
Narrator: But Buster had miscalculated the Army’s current need for personnel.
Army Doctor: Okay, then, let’s get you fitted for a uniform.
Buster: What? (panicked whimper)

Episode Goofs
The photograph of George, Sr. at the unveiling of the banana stand is from 1963. However, in the "Pilot", it is said that the banana stand opened in 1953.

The narrator states that the Bluth Company is gearing up for Phase Two. However, in "Staff Infection", the Bluth Company was getting ready for Phase Three.

A photograph of George, Sr. at the the completion of the Orange County Prison in 1983 is shown, but in several previous episodes, 1903 is shown as the completion date of the Orange County Prison.

Cultural References
Episode Title: The One Where They Build a House

Like the previous episode, the episode title is a reference to Friends where every episode title begins with "The One Where/With/..."

G.O.B. yelling in the meeting is a reference to Howard Dean's campaign speech during the 2004 presidential primaries.

Visual: The house falling on Buster

The house falling on Buster is a reference to the movie Steamboat Bill, Jr.

Visual: G.O.B. unfurling a "Mission Accomplished" banner

G.O.B. rolling out his Mission Accomplished banner is a reference to President George W. Bush doing a similar thing in reference to winning the Iraqi war.

Episode References
Lindsay: (to Tom Jane) You’re gross.

Lindsay's line is a callback to "Key Decisions" when she tells Johnny Bark the same thing.

G.O.B.: I bleeped the business model.

G.O.B. "bleeping" the business model is a reference to "Visiting Ours" where G.O.B. states that he "bleeped Kitty".

G.O.B. thinks that George, Sr. is in Portugal, in South America, paralleling "In God We Trust" where G.O.B. thinks Portugal is in South America.

Visual: Tom Jane’s movie poster for Junk

Tom Jane’s movie poster for Junk reads that it’s “From the directors of Dangerous Cousins". Dangerous Cousins (Les cousins dangereux in French) was the movie that George Michael and Maeby snuck into in "My Mother The Car".

Buster: Uh, oh, I guess I have the panic attacks under control.

Buster's frequent panic attacks were first seen in the "Pilot".

Buster: ...hole in my heart.

Buster lists the hole in his heart while talking with the Army recruiter. The hole in his heart was first mentioned in "Storming the Castle" by Lucille and later in "Missing Kitty" by Michael.

Starla mispronounces G.O.B. much like the announcer did in "Pier Pressure" and Trisha Thoon did in the "Pilot".

Visual: Tobias blending into the Cloud Mir advertisement

The Cloud Mir vodka was first seen in "Public Relations".

(about his affair with Kitty)
George, Sr.: I've made a huge mistake.

The phrase "I made a huge mistake" was first used in "Key Decisions" by G.O.B. after he realizes what committing to Marta meant.

Visual: Kitty's Señor Tadpole’s shirt

Kitty's Señor Tadpole’s shirt is a reference to "Missing Kitty" when Kitty goes to Señor Tadpole’s for spring break.

During the episode, George, Sr. can't remember the word for brother in Spanish so he uses "brothero" instead, much like G.O.B. did in "Marta Complex".

G.O.B can't use the speakerphone paralleling his troubles with the intercom in "The One Where Michael Leaves".
