Ask This Old House: Replace a Closet Flange; Repairing Plaster Wall

Rich Trethewey helps a homeowner with a very cramped bathroom correct a rocking toilet. The problem is that the closet flange to which the toilet bolts has failed; Rich explains how to replace it. The team tries to identify a gizmo with a hydraulic jack, safety chain and four small wheels. Tom Silva visits a home with several severely cracked walls, and demonstrates a new system for reattaching plaster to lathe using a special glue and screws, then demonstrates sealing the cracks with joint compound. Finally, the team presents a viewer's tip: a way to easily see how far you've dug with a post hole digger.

The device featured during "What Is It?" helps the plumber lift a toilet. After detaching the flange bolts, he slides the device around the toilet and fastens the safety chain, then uses the hydraulic jack to lift the toilet from the floor and move it aside.
