Australian Idol

Australian Idol

Australian Idol is the latest search for a musical superstar. Australian Idol is a 17-week reality program which seeks to find Australia's next singing star. Over 50,000 people had auditioned for the program during the recent auditions in capital cities. Australian Idol 6 will follow the landslide success of the first five series in Australia. Five years ago, the first Australian Idol launched the careers of Guy Sebastian and Shannon Noll. The year after that, the second series, launched the careers of Casey Donovan, Anthony Callea, and Ricki-Lee. This year, who knows who will be transformed into a nationally known superstar! Season 6 sees auditions in London for Aussies Who live there as well as all the state capitals. New elements will be added to this years Idol show including a Live audience for the Sydney Top 100 round and instruments will still be prominent in the auditions.

While Australian's are no stranger to popular reality doco-soap Popstars, with four series having been screened on Channel Seven, Australian Idol program differs by allowing viewers the chance to decide who will receive a record deal and contracts with SonyBMG based on live weekly shows and a national phone vote similar to Big Brother evictions. Despite the previous success of Popstars, Network Ten is convinced that the Idol phenomenon is a winning formula, "The key difference is that Australian Idol is predominantly studio-based, it's predominantly live and it's 100 percent about talent."

Judges Marcia Hines, radio personality Kyle Sandilands and former BMG executive Ian "Dicko" Dickson are responsible for choosing the 24 finalists from a field of around 100 of the best from the national auditions, before Australians vote for their favourite contestant in a series of rounds.

The 24 finalists will be narrowed to 12 as the show progresses. These 12 contestants will each perform various songs live to a national audience each week. The group may also perform a song together which is not judged. Contestants compete for the major prize with viewers determining the winner through telephone voting and possibly through other media such as- SMS and Internet voting. The three Judges also play a part in determining the winner in each round. The finalist with the least votes is eliminated each week until two contestants are left. The final contestant left standing will be crown the Australian Idol and will receive a recording contract with SonyBMG.

6x5: Sydney Auditions pt1 recap: Finally the judges get to Sydney to see what the harbour city has to offer, Unfortunately Kyle has pneumonia and can't join Marcia and Dicko for this round of Auditions. Reduced to 2 judges it now takes a unanimous verdict to get through to the top 100. As is customary the first audition shown is woeful. Marcia seems to have taken it upon herself to be the bearer of bad news in Kyle's absence. Bring in Roshani Priddis singing a John Legend number and the tide appears to have turned. After a few more bad entry's Matt Parson's a Baker Plays Digerridoo and guitar, wows marcia and dicko with his vocals singing an original followed by a Goo goo dolls number and "Home" by Michael Buble. A bit of fun ensues when Ricki-Lee Hides behind a contestant and sings for the, and then it get serious again with a returning contestant get knocked back at the first hurdle this time. Rounding out this episode and day 1 of the Sydney Auditions is Wes Car a 25yo sydney Pub performer, He gets through with flying colours singing Jimmy Hendrix's Holding on to the Watchtower. 6x4: Adelaide and London Auditions recap: Clearly not much was expected from Adelaide this year as the idol judges went to the nearby Barossa Valley Winery and only took about 2 bus loads of auditionees with them - the first three to audition were woeful in the extreme and the judges didn't waste any time saying no. Enter 16yo Tom Williams singing "waiting on the world to change" 3 yes votes later and he's through. With the hosts James and Andrew content to try the Red Wine, the judges had other things to numb their brains. In comes James Butto With his music book and an auditon that has Marcia in stiches. So Adelaide sent just 6 singers through to Sydney... read more.

6x3: Brisbane Audtions recap: For the third of the audition episodes, Idol heads up to sunny Brisbane. After a the scariest rendition of ACDC's Thunderstruck, things are looking grim for the sunshine state. After discovering that most of the auditionees aren't from Brisbane but from the way more glamorous Gold Coast, a few get through. The Steele Brothers from far north Queensland have a mixed decision with one through and one not, a couple of mothers of contestants get irate that their kids have been told the truth, and just when you think its all over a contestant who doesn't know if he can sing or not gets through. A further 18 in total get through to the Top 100 Round in Sydney... read more.

6x2: Perth Auditions recap: Episode 2 takes us to Perth, and as ususal it's slim pickings ... at first.
