Unfrozen from a 100-year inprisonment in an iceberg, Aang is the current Avatar, able to master all the elements. He is only 12 years old, and doesn't exactly fit the mold of wise old saviour. Rather, he's cocky, innocent, and fun-loving. Nevertheless, he is the only one capable of ending the war. Aang needs to master all four elements and defeat the Fire Nation in order to bring peace to the world.

Katara the only waterbender of the sothern water tribe is one of Aang's companions on his journey. She is a capable waterbender, though she is constantly on the lookout for a true master who can teach her greater skills. Katara is one of Aang's greatest friends, and her waterbending skills can come in handy.

Sokka is Katara's brother, and another member of the southern water tribe. He may seem like a bonehead at times, and other times he just is, but don't be fooled, Sokka is a loyal friend. He is also a good fighter, and very useful, despite the fact he can't bend.

Appa is Aang's flying bison, who was also frozen in the iceberg that trapped Aang. The bison is Aang's main method of transportation, allowing him to traveling quickly and across any terrain. Despite his size, Appa is really very gentle and loving.

Momo is Aang's pet flying lemur. The curious rodent was found in "The Southern Air Temple", hanging around outside. Sokka tried to eat him. Momo frequently does little annoying things, mostly to Sokka, marked by a honking tune.

Princess Azula is the Fire Lord's daughter and Prince Zuko's bratty little sister. She's a Firebending prodigy, according to Zuko, and is daddy's favorite. She's as much of a princess as Sokka though, the girl knows how to fight, and can do many extrordinary things, such as bend lightning (not much unlike her Uncle). She was sent out by her father to capture her brother Zuko and her Uncle Iroh, and has also taken it upon herself to capture the Avatar.

Uncle Iroh is Zuko's uncle, and his main companion on his never-ending Avatar hunts. Zuko lashes out at Iroh occasionally, but overall seems to reagrd him as the closet thing he has to a parent. Iroh is a skilled fighter, a fact that some would not guess after hearing his easy going personality. In season two he is wanted for treason against the Fire Nation.

Toph is a twelve year old Earthbender who has been blind her whole life. She does not feel blind though, because she uses her powers of Earthbending to see, so it is like seeing with her feet. Her parents never knew how good of an earthbender she was, and always treated her like a helpless little child. After she met Aang, she found the courage to to tell her parents who she really was, and later joined Aang, Katara, and Sokka on their journey so she could teach Aang earthbending. Prince Zuko is the outcast prince of the Fire Nation. After failing his father, FIre Lord Ozai, Zuko lost his position, honor, and most importantly, his father's respect. Zuko, a capable firebender, believes that capturing the Avatar will regain him his former position. In season two, he is a refugee along with his uncle, on the run from the Fire Nation.
