The gang gets new Fire Nation clothes in order to blend in, but Aang is mistaken for a student and gets enrolled in a local school. He uses this opportunity to learn more about the secrets of the Fire Nation, but soon realizes that Fire Nation traditions are much different than that of the Air Nomads, and decides to throw a dance party in order to help the kids there lighten up. Meanwhile he bonds with a girl from his class, making Katara a bit jealous. Elsewhere, Zuko confronts Iroh in jail, but doesn't get the response he was looking for.

Episode Notes

The Fire Nation Oath:
My life I give to my country,
With my hands I fight for Fire Lord Ozai,
And our forefathers before him,
And with my mind I seek ways to better my country,
And with my feet may our march to civilization continue-

Zuko hires a "bounty hunter" at the end of episode to hunt down the Avatar. Later nicknamed "Sparky Sparky Boom Man" by Sokka and officially "The Combustion Man" by the gang shortly after that. The Combustion Man has a metal prosthetic arm and leg.

Aang notes that the Air Nomads had no official military, so the Fire Nation must have ambushed them in order to defeat them.

Accidentally, this episode was leaked onto TurboNick the Wednesday before it aired. It was quickly taken off the next day.

It is stated that Toph punches the soles out of her shoes as they impair her sight.

Aang mentions 2 dances the Fire Nation had before the war began, named "The Phoenix Flight and The Camillipant Strike".

When asked in school Aang says that his name is "Kuzon". Kuzon was the name of Aang's friend from before the war, whom he mentioned in "The Blue Spirit". Aang also states that Kuzon used to live in the town the gang visits in this episode.

Instruments in the Fire Nation school band include the Flute, the Morin Khuur, the Oud, the Percussion Drum, and the Sungi Horn.

Fire Nation folks apparently use steam from small volcanic holes in order to "steam clean" their clothes.

In order to hide Appa from being seen while flying Aang and Katara use a combination of air and water bending to bend a cloud around him.

Episode Quotes

Katara: Sokka, we're safe. You can take off the fake mustache.
Sokka: No, I can't. It's permanently glued to my skin.

Aang: Sorry buddy. You should probably wait out back.
(Appa moans)
Aang: I know. You've got fancier feet then anybody, and six of 'em!

Aang: I already have a picture of Fire Lord Ozai, and here's one that I made out of noodles!

Aang: I guess we'll never find out about the secret river then. It goes right to the Fire Lord's palace. We were supposed to learn about it in class tomorrow.
Sokka: Hmmm, I am a fan of secret rivers.

Music Teacher: Kuzon!
Aang (Kuzon): I Know, I'm a terrible Sunghi Hornist.
Music Teacher: No child, that holabaloo going on with your feet. Is that a nervous disorder?

Mai: Orange is such an awful color.
Zuko: You're so beautiful when you hate the world.
Mai: I don't hate you.
Zuko: I don't hate you too.

Sokka: Great job with the cloud camo, but next time let's disguise ourselves as the kind of cloud who knows how to keep its mouth shut.
Toph: Yeah, we wouldn't want a bird to hear us chatting up there and turn us in.
Sokka: Hey, we're in enemy territory. Those are enemy birds!

Katara: Aang, everyone's watching.
Aang: Don't worry about them. It's you and me right now.

Sokka: I can't believe we're having a dance party. It seems so silly.
Aang: Don't think of it as a dance party, but as a cultural event celebrating the art of fancy footwork.

Cultural References

"Flameo"

A new Fire Nation term is introduced, "Flameo", which seems to be used as a greeting much like the British term "Cheerio".

Saturday Night Fever

The final move the boy doing freestyle does seems to be an homage to a dance move John Travolta does in the movie Saturday Night Fever. Another student appears to be doing a more modern dance move known as "The Sprinkler".
