  Episode Notes
We find out that Ursa's grandfather was killed by Ozai's grandfather, and at one point when they were younger they were best friends.

In a flashback we see Gyatso use his air glider in a form not previously seen on the show. This form involves balancing yourself while standing on top of the glider. Aang referred to it as "Sky Surfing".

We find out that Avatar Roku was friends with Monk Gyatso when they were younger. The two met while Avatar Roku was training at the Southern Air Temple.

While Aang is in the spirit world, he appears as he looked prior to season three. For instance he is back in his air nomad clothes and has no hair.

We are shown that both Avatar Roku and Firelord Sozin owned dragons during their lifetime. Knowing this reveals that you don't have to be the current avatar, or the avatar at all for that manner, to own a dragon. It also reveals that while one has never been seen on the show, with the exception of in flashbacks and in the spirit world, dragons may be another creature common to the avatar world.

Roku tells Aang that it took him 12 years to master all four elements.

At the end of the episode we find out that Iroh had been the one leaving the scrolls for Zuko to find. This means that Iroh knows a way out of jail, and that he has been escaping and coming back without the guards knowledge.

Through Roku's past we find out that he had trouble mastering water bending because he was naturally a firebender, similar to how Aang had trouble mastering earth bending because he is naturally an air bender.

We find out that Roku was married during his lifetime, and that Sozin was the best man at his wedding.

Avatar Roku's dragon is/was named "Fang".

In this episode we see Aang being born. This happens immediately after Avatar Roku and Fang are killed by the volcano.

Iroh reveals to Zuko that Ursa's grandfather was Avatar Roku, which makes Avatar Roku Zuko and Azula's great grandfather.

Iroh speaks for the first time this season during this episode. With the exception of "Bending Battle", this also is the first time Iroh is voiced by Greg Baldwin.

The events of this episode occur on the Summer Solstice, which would place it exactly six months after the Winter Solstice (Book 1, Chapter 8: "Winter Solstice Part 2 (Avatar Roku)").

This episode reveals that Avatar Roku and Firelord Sozin shared the same birthday.

Apparently, fire benders have the ability to transfer and remove heat, as demonstrated by Roku when he removes heat from the lava.

  Episode Quotes
Iroh: Understanding the struggle between your two great-grandfathers can help you better understand the battle within yourself. Evil and good are always at war inside you, Zuko, it is your nature, your legacy. But, there is a bright side. What happened generations ago can be resolved now, by you. Because of your legacy, you alone can cleanse the sins of our family, and the Fire Nation. Born in you, along with all strife, is the power to restore balance to the world.

Roku: I've seen the colonies Sozin. How dare you occupy Earth Kingdom territory!
Sozin: How dare you, a citizen of the Fire Nation, address your Firelord this way! Your loyalty is to our nation first, anything less makes you a traitor
Roku: Don't do this Sozin. Don't challenge me. It will only end badly.

Roku: Sozin, it's my wedding! Have a cookie! Dance with someone!

Roku: Love's hard when you're young.
Aang: You don't have to tell me.
Roku: Don't worry; it gets better.

Roku: I'm letting you go, Sozin. I'm letting you go as a tribute to our past friendship, but I warn you, one more step out of line will result in your permanent end.

Aang: You were friends with Fire Lord Sozin?
Roku: Back then he was just Prince Sozin, and he was my best friend.

  Episode Goofs
In order to dodge Azulon's fire blast, Roku burrows himself into the ground using earth bending. Doing this involves tearing apart the ground below you. When Roku does this, he is standing above a carpet. After the ground above him closes, the carpet is still intact. In theory, earth bending himself into the ground while standing on a carpet should have ripped the carpet, or made the move impossible.

  Episode References
Katara: Do they have bathrooms in the Spirit World?
Sokka: As a matter of fact, they do not.

Sokka is referring to the knowledge he gained from his trip to the Spirit World in "Winter Solstice Part 1 (The Spirit World)".
