1930s private detective Miles Banyon (Robert Forster) takes on whatever case comes his way for $20 a day plus expenses. A secretarial school run by good friend Peggy Revere (Joan Blondell) is in the same building as Banyon's office and she keeps him supplied with pretty receptionists. Lt. Pete McNeill (Richard Jaeckel) was Banyon's contact on the LAPD and singer Abby Graham (Julie Gregg) was his sometime galpal.
