In the past, Batman and Robin get the call from the Commissioner on the Red Phone. Descending to the Batcave on the Batpoles, they race out into the night to take on Crazy Quilt, a demented villain who has sent them a clue of a painting with colored waves. Batman warns that the clue refers to waves of light and Crazy Quilt is going after a Stimulated Emission light Amplifier (SELA) at the Exposition Hall. The Dynamic Duo makes short work of Crazy Quilt’s three henchmen, Red, Blue, and Green. The Color Guard go down but Crazy Quilt activates the SLEA and fires at the heroes. They take cover and when Robin sees a beam bounce off of a lunar module’s solar panels, Robin gets an idea and uses a panel to reflect the beam back at the villain. Crazy Quilt is permanently blinded.
In the present, Solomon Grundy is robbing a bank in Bludhaven. The police are helpless but Robin, the now adult Boy Wonder, arrives to defeat Solomon Grundy. As he does so, he boasts of how he’s on his own and no longer has to take orders. As Robin departs, he sees a giant eye projected on the clouds. It blinks out a message in Morse code. Batman arrives and pulls up, and tells him it spells out an address. Batman warns that Robin doesn’t know as much about Crazy Quilt, and tells Robin to follow his lead.
They arrive at the address and an abandoned nightclub. Going inside, they find paper cut-outs of red fish. Batman concludes they refer to a blind artist who switched to paper cutouts. Color Quilt seemingly reveals himself and Robin charges at him despite Batman’s warning. The Color Guard attack and the heroes easily avoid them. Robin goes through the door and into the chamber, slamming into Crazy Quilt. However, it’s a dummy. Batman goes in and the door seals behind them. Crazy Quilt sends a transmission boasting that the entire chamber is a giant kaleidoscope and it starts rotating at high speed, threatening to crush the heroes.
Robin suggests cutting through the wall with a Batarang, but Batman insists that by then it will be too laser. He uses a Batlaser to destroy the light generator at the same time that Robin cuts through the wall. Batman figures Crazy Quilt is after something bigger. The villains destroyed Robin’s bike, so Batman offers him a ride on the Batcycle’s sidecar. Robin still wants to take Crazy Quilt down on his own. When he reveals that Crazy Quilt stole a Van Gogh painting of “Starry Night,” Robin concludes he’s heading for S.T.A.R. Lab. Batman, not hearing him, comes up with the same deduction a second later. They arrive at S.T.A.R. Labs and the guard is glad to see… Batman. The heroes go inside and attack Crazy Quilt and his Color Guard. Red takes a hostage and Crazy Quilt fires the SELA. The heroes take cover and Red heads for their getaway vehicle. Batman sends Robin after him, insisting that he’s good at capture henchmen. Outside, Red opens fire and Robin takes cover. Inside, Batman takes out Blue and Green, and Crazy Quilt explains he prepares to wire the device into his optic nerves. He opens fire, knocking Batman unconscious.
Outside, Robin takes down Red but Crazy Quilt and his other henchmen emerge on board the SELA. Crazy Quilt boasts that he’s going to turn them into carpets and then brings a wall down on Robin before departing. He takes Batman to an abandoned textile factory and strings him to a giant loom. Crazy Quilt prepares to destroy the entire city in Robin’s name. Back at the laboratory, Robin frees himself and deduces that Crazy Quilt will take Batman to a textile factory to make good his threat to turn him into a carpet. He knocks out Blue, standing guard, while complaining about how Batman doesn’t respect him, and then goes inside.
Inside the factory, Robin takes out Red and Green and finds Crazy Quilt’s twisted shrine of Robin paintings and news clippings. When he sees that Batman is tied up, Robin tells Batman what he thinks of him and how he can function on his own. Batman frees himself and thanks him for taking out the henchmen. Crazy Quilt smashes through the wall, now mentally wired directly into SELA. He opens fire on the heroes and uses his personal weaponry to dispose of Batman’s Batarangs. Batman tells Robin to take on Crazy Quilt, and Robin says he’s got it. As Crazy Quilt closes in, Batman draws his fire. Robin swings up to the rafters and drops a girder on the emitter cannon, destroying it. He then swings down and delivers the final blow to the villain, knocking him unconscious.
As the police haul Crazy Quilt away, Batman says he’s always had faith in Robin and trusted him to work Bludhaven solo. Robin admits he learned from the best. The Commissioner calls to tell them that Killer Moth is on the loose and Robin agrees to go with his mentor and partner.
