Death Race to Oblivion! - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
A class of students goes to the museum to see the dinosaur exhibition. One boy, Desmond, shoves past Billy Batson and goes for the Star of Bionya, an enormous diamond. However, Batman arrives and stops Desmond, warning him he’s been watching the boy since he broke into STAR Labs and stole chemicals. The crowd turns against Batman for seemingly picking on a harmless boy and Batman releases Desmond, but the boy drinks the chemicals and transforms into… the Blockbuster! Batman is badly outmatched but a heroic ally comes to his aid: Billy Batson. The boy speaks the magic word “Shazam!” and transforms into Captain Marvel. Together the two heroes defeat Blockbuster and than Captain Marvel runs off to see the dinosaurs.

Warmoon appears above Earth and uses its energy cannons to carve an enormous racecourse deep in the desert. Next, heroes and villains are teleported onto the course, along with their vehicles. Mongul descends from Warmoon and tells them that he has chosen them to participate in his game. Mongul explains that he can telepathically command Warmoon to destroy the planet if they attack him, and that they will race his champion, Steppenwolf. If Steppenwolf wins, Mongul destroys Earth. If any of the other participants win, Mongul will designate them the ruler of Earth on his behalf. As each one loses, the other participants will be teleported into a holding cell to await execution. When Green Arrow wonders what happens if they refuse to play, Mongul warns that they are free to drop out… but he will destroy their home cities.

The heroes and villains have no choice but to participate. Many of them prepare their vehicles, while Guy Gardner uses his power ring to create a car and Plastic Man shapeshifts into a car with his sidekick Woozy Winks driving. Green Arrow tries to talk to Batman, but the Caped Crusader is seemingly obsessed with protecting Gotham, and notes that the last time he raced Green Arrow in Monte Carlo, he won. When Huntress objects to Batman’s treatment, Batman ignores her.

Mongul starts the race and Plastic Man literally springs into an early leader. However, Steppenwolf’s war machine is equipped with advanced weapon and knocks him off the road. Plastic Man just manages to transform himself into a parachute and rescue Woozy, but the two of them are teleported to Warmoon and a forcefield cell.

Catwoman uses her Catmobile’s claws to try and rake Huntress off the road. Huntress uses a ledge to land on top of the Catmobile and sends it spinning out of control off the edge of the course. Green Arrow tells Batman to rescue the villainess before she falls, but Batman ignores her. However, Mongul teleports Catwoman to the villains’ cell on Warmoon just in time. Meanwhile, Black Manta, Joker, and Gentleman Ghost team up to drive the Batmobile off the course. Batman manages to snag the Black Manta’s war machine with cables, and then transforms the Batmobile into the Batplane. Black Manta cuts himself free but the Gentleman Ghost’s antique car is knocked off and the villain teleported away. The Joker uses a giant whoopee cushion to fire a blast of air at Black Manta, knocking his war machine off the course.

Mongul is impressed at Batman’s ruthless but reminds him that it’s a land race and orders him to land or be disqualified. Batman returns to the ground and Mongul warns Steppenwolf that he may soon be replaced.

Guy Gardner tries to take the lead and his power ring proves the match of Steppenwolf’s weaponry. He creates a pair of ear muffs to protect himself against Steppenwolf’s sonic attack and maintain his concentration, but the Joker distracts him with a jack-in-the-box and Guy goes tumbling to the ground as his power-ring car disappears on him. He’s teleported into a cell with Plastic Man and Woozy, and discovers that his power ring has been taken from him and placed in a nearby container.

Green Arrow and Mongul both realize that Batman will stop at nothing to win. Green Arrow tries to get an answer from Batman, but the Caped Crusader drives him off the road. Green Arrow jumps clear, using a pair of flame-retardant foam arrows to protect himself. Mongul teleports him to the heroes’ cell on Warmoon and places the Emerald Archer’s weaponry in a container near Guy’s power ring.

Batman and the Huntress go after the Joker, who uses a joker fish to shatter the Batmobile’s windshield. While Batman is distracted, the Clown Prince of Crime fires a burst of acid from a giant squirting flower at the Huntress’ cycle. She fires her crossbow at the Jokermobile’s tires, taking the Joker out of the race. Huntress’ cycle goes off the edge of the cliff. Aboard Warmoon, the heroes can only watch as Huntress seemingly plummets to her death. Green Arrow then removes an EMP generated from a hidden compartment in his boot. It can disrupt the forcefield for a brief second and let them get to their weaponry. However, they have nothing to launch through the forcefield… except Guy Gardner. Plastic Man transforms into a bow and Green Arrow shoots his fellow hero through the momentary gap. Guy gets his power ring, frees the other heroes, and they head for Warmoon’s power core.

When Steppenwolf fires at him, Batman separates the Batcycle from the Batmobile and gets ahead of Steppenwolf. Steppenwolf prepares to destroy the covered Batcycle, but someone pilots the Batmobile into his war machine from behind, knocking him off the road. The Batmobile crosses the finish line and Batman steps out: Huntress is driving the Batcycle.

Mongul arrives to offer his congratulations, but then double-crosses the hero and prepares to destroy Earth anyway. However, the Warmoon blows up and Guy Gardner brings everyone down. Mongul prepares to destroy them all but Batman transforms the Batmobile into its war machine form and knocks out the villain with one punch. As they take the villain away, Green Arrow explains that during Monte Carlo, they teamed up to defeat Clock King, so Batman’s comment was a signal to team up and defeat Mongul. As for Huntress, she refuses to say if she planned it all along.
