When the Walsh family moves from Minnesota to Beverly Hills, California they experience a dramatic culture shock when they are exposed to the glamor, wealth, and privilege of their new home town. While parents Jim and Cindy try to become used to their new faster-paced lives, twins Brenda and Brandon learn that the student body at West Beverly High is completely different than the friends they left behind.
In the original pilot, Jackie Taylor was played by Pamela Galloway instead of Ann Gillespie; and Jim Walsh was played by Lyman Ward instead of James Eckhouse.

Steve: Hey, get off it. I'm the guy who taught you how to work that clutch.
Kelly: I drive an automatic, thank you very much.
Brandon: First day of school. Strange city, new house, no friends. I'm psyched.
Steve: (about Kelly) She's lousy in bed, she's got a nasty personality.
David: I could live with that.
Steve: Who are you?
Brenda: Everyone here looks like they stepped out of a music video. I don't even have the right hair.
Brenda: Nobody knows me here. I could be anybody. I could be somebody.
Andrea: There are better ways to get popular then advertising your sexual conquests.
The exterior of the Walsh house is different in this episode than the rest of the series.
In this episode, Brenda has a driver's license; however, in later episodes, it is a recurring theme that Brenda does not have a driver's license and has to learn to drive.
