When the Walsh family moves from Minnesota to Beverly Hills, California they experience a dramatic culture shock when they are exposed to the glamor, wealth, and privilege of their new home town. While parents Jim and Cindy try to become used to their new faster-paced lives, twins Brenda and Brandon learn that the student body at West Beverly High is completely different than the friends they left behind.
Brandon is given an assignment to write about his experience as a transfer student and later helps out a younger student who is being the victim of bullying. When Brandon goes surfing with Dylan, he meets Sara, who he later must save when she is involved in an accident. Meanwhile, Brenda has an argument with her new friends.
When Brenda goes shopping with Kelly and Tiffany, she is shocked to learn Tiffany is a shoplifter, but nonetheless lets Tiffany pressure her into letting her stash her stolen goods at Brenda’s house. When Brenda and Tiffany are later arrested for stealing, Cindy begins to think that moving to Beverly Hills changed her daughter for the worst. Meanwhile, with some help from Dylan, Brandon is hired at the Peach Pit.
Sheryl, Brandon’s girlfriend from Minnesota, makes a surprise visit to Beverly Hills and stays with the Walsh family for a few days. However, despite spending the night together for the first time, Sheryl flirts with Dylan which leads to an explosive fight between Brandon and Dylan. Meanwhile, Brenda develops a crush on one of her teachers and offers to babysit for him.
Brandon decides to try out for the basketball team and is asked by Andrea to look into the rumor that the school recruits students from out-of-district schools in order to boost their stats. Meanwhile, Brenda takes driver’s education, but fails twice and ends up losing Brandon’s car when trying to pick Kelly up from a bad date.
When Steve gets an A in history – a class that everyone else has a hard time in because of a steep grading curve – Brandon studies with him and learns that Steve has been stealing exams before the test. Meanwhile, Brenda tries to catch Dylan’s eye by dying her hair blond, but thing do not go as planned.
For the 15th Annual West Beverly High Fashion Show, the gang is in high form. Andrea goes with Cindy and Kelly ends up kissing David after he gives her a tape of the show. There, Brenda meets Kelly’s mother, who she thinks is the perfect mother, but Kelly becomes upset with her mother after she discovers she did cocaine and drank at the fashion show.
It’s Jim and Cindy’s 17th wedding anniversary and things are stirred up when Cindy’s high school boyfriend, Glen Evans, comes to Beverly Hills to tell her he still has feelings for her, leading them to kiss. When Brandon and Brenda become convinced that Cindy is having an affair, Kelly talks to Brenda about divorce. Meanwhile, David, Steve and Donna try out to be the new school DJ and Brenda and Brandon participate in a twin study.
Dylan talks to Brandon about sex when a 14 year old has a crush on him, but Brandon has a crush on Nina … until he meets her husband. David is crowned the next West Beverly Hill High DJ, much to Steve and Donna’s chagrin. Brenda, through the new teen help line, helps Bonnie through a rape. Meanwhile, Andrea helps a boy with a problem though the help line and Brenda learns Kelly lost her virginity in the 7th grade.
Brenda comes home to find Dylan in the shower, she catches him in only a towel. As they decide to go out on a date, Jim worries about a possible relationship forming between the two. Meanwhile, Dylan decides to take an AIDS test after the gang attends an AIDS seminar at school.
When Donna’s parents go to Cabo San Lucas for the week, she throws a party where Kelly and Steve hook up. The next weekend when Jim and Cindy are out of town, Brenda throws a party and the cops end up paying her a visit. After Brandon kisses Andrea and upsets her, he goes driving where he crashes his car and his arrested for drunk driving. Dylan comes to his rescue and brings him to an AA meeting.
Brandon goes on a date with Melissa, a single mother, and he learns the “joys” of parenthood. Meanwhile, Kelly and Brenda enter a radio contest where the prize is a trip where they get to go skydiving.
Brenda invites Kelly, Donna and Andrea over for a slumber party, but when Amanda, Kelly’s rude friend, shows up, things take a bad turn. Meanwhile, Brandon and Steve go out with two girls who end up stealing Brandon’s car.
The Walshes let Carla, their maid’s daughter, use their address so she can attend West Beverly High and Brandon begins to develop a crush on her. Meanwhile, Jim hosts a party for his new client, a sportswear designer; and David tries to get MC Hammer to perform at the school dance.
Thinking that his grandparents are on a cruise, David has Steve, Kelly and Donna come over for the weekend at his grandparent’s home in Palm Springs. There, Brenda gets lost trying to find Dylan’s hotel and ends up seeing him flirt with another girl. Back in Beverly Hills, Brandon makes friends with a young boy until he catches him stealing.
Brandon is given the chance to play an extra on a popular teen soap, Keep it Together, where he makes friends with the show’s main star, Lydia Leeds, who tries to get him a recurring guest role on the series. Meanwhile, Brenda takes over for Brandon at the Peach Pit.
Andrea and Kelly have Brandon run for class president. Meanwhile, Brenda moves out of the Walsh home to live with her new friend, Sky, in her small apartment.
Steve and Andrea stress over their upcoming SAT testing and decide to study for the test together, but they don’t too a whole lot of studying. Brenda, after reading an article about self-exams, finds a lump in her breast and Brandon misses the SAT exam to go with Brenda to learn the results of the biopsy.
Brandon is assigned to write a senior profile for a classmate, Roger Azarian, who is writing a disturbing screenplay. Meanwhile, Donna decides to cut class in order to put forth a “bad girl” persona after learning she did poorly on the SATs; and Brenda and Brandon are upset when they get the same score on the SATs.
Brandon and Steve coach Jim’s little league team when Jim hurts his back and cannot coach. When Brandon becomes worried about all of the pressure the young boys are under to succeed, Andrea helps Brandon by bringing in a female celebrity to give a motivational speech to the team.
Kelly becomes preoccupied with being named Spring Queen at the upcoming school dance and ends up hurting Steve when she asks Brandon to go with her instead. Steve, upset over not going with Kelly, gets drunk at the dance and lashes out at everyone. Meanwhile, Dylan books a room at the hotel in which the dance is taking place and Brenda decides to join him; and David learns a contest that wins him the first dance with the Spring Queen.
Jim tells Brandon and Brenda that the Walsh family is moving back to Minneapolis after he gets a job offer in their home state. Saddened over the news, Brandon and Brenda think that everyone is ignoring them until they walk in on their surprise going away party.
With school out for the summer, Brandon is working to earn enough money to buy a 1965 Mustang convertible. To do so, he quits working at the Peach Pit and sets out to find a higher paying job. He is later hired as a cabana boy at the Beverly Hills Beach Club. Meanwhile, after taking a home pregnancy test, Kelly takes Brenda to the gynecologist where the truth as to whether or not she is pregnant is decided once and for all, but the results mean the end for Brenda and Dylan.
While working at the Beverly Hills Beach Club, Brandon meets Jerry Ratinger who hires him as a driver for his wife. However, when Brandon meets and kisses a girl, he is upset to learn from Jerry's wife that she is Jerry's mistress. Meanwhile, David, Andrea, Brenda, and Donna go to their acting class.
When Jack McKay is indicted on income tax evasion, Dylan goes out surfing in dangerous waters and is injured in the storm. The Walsh family take him to the hospital, but Jim is upset when he catches Brenda kissing Dylan. Meanwhile, Andrea, Donna, David and Brenda continue their acting class with Donna as Romeo and David as Juliet.
The boys convince Brenda and Donna to be babes for a poker game at the Beverly Hills Beach Club. There, David wins big while Dylan comes out broke.
Andrea has Brandon mentor young Felix from the Euclid Apartments. As doing so, Brandon soon learns that Felix is being abused at home. Meanwhile, when Jackie breaks a tooth, she goes to Mel Silver to fix it and the two subsequently go out on a date.
After having a fight over Chris Suiter, Brenda and Andrea end up fighting while acting in a scene in "Turning Point." Brandon is finally able to buy his 1965 Mustang convertible, but is disappointed when it breaks down soon after. Meanwhile, Dylan returns home from Hawaii.
The gang drives out to Yosemite National Park to go camping. There, they help a young couple deal with a surprise pregnancy. Later, Dylan saves Brandon when he almost falls off of a cliff; and the gang discuss their respective parent's divorces.
It's the first day of school and the gang meets the new girl at school, Emily Valentine. Steve immediately falls for her, and both Brandon and Dylan go out on a date and kiss her. Meanwhile, Andrea joins the school paper and Scott returns from Oklahoma.
The Walsh family installs a new home alarm system, but the wiring is off, causing all sorts of problems with the alarm system. At school, Brandon meets Robinson Ash, III, the photographer for the school newspaper, and ends up dating his sister, Cherice. However, when Cherice's boyfriend, Devo, learns about Brandon, he is not happy.
Dylan's mother, Iris McKay, arrives in Beverly Hills and her arrival sends Dylan down a path of destruction: he ditches school, loses over 800 dollars at a pool hall, drinks and winds up in a fight.
A Walsh cousin arrives to stay with the Walshes, and he quickly catches Kelly's eye. Meanwhile, Brenda gets her driver's licence, but is afraid of driving alone.
Andrea's recent success in the writing competition reveals the fact that she may not be living within the Beverly Hills district. Meanwhile, Steve's new girlfriend proves to be more interested in his money than in him.
While out on a walk with Emily and her two younger cousins, Brandon and Emily get lost. Meanwhile, as David and Scott contemplate having an egg fight, Kelly finds herself in a scary situation.
During Scott's surprise party, a devistating accident turns fatal. Meanwhile, Andrea becomes jealous of Brandon and Emily.
The gang heads to an underground club where Emily gets Brandon mixed up with drugs.
Emily has a hard time accepting her and Brandon's breakup. Meanwhile, Brenda and Dylan decide to go to a classical music concert.
Steve's adoptive mother asks him to be friends with Chuckie, her old co-star. However, after being suspended from school, Steve decides to find his birth parents.
It's Christmastime and Steve heads to Albuquerque to find his grandfather in order to find out why his mother put him up for adoption. Meanwhile, Dylan visits his father in prison; and later, Samantha, Kelly, Jackie, Andrea, David, Mel, Donna, Dylan and Steve head to the Walsh house for Christmas dinner.
Brandon, Steve and Dylan join a hockey team coached by Jim. There, Brandon meets Trisha, a figure skater and the two hit it off. However, her coach is not happy with their new relationship when it begins to interfere with her practicing. Meanwhile, when Deidre steals Brenda's big commission, Brenda sets out to get back at her.
When Brandon joins the school track team, the coach removes Steve from the relay in favor of Brandon. Things get complicated at practice when rumors of steriod use get to the coach.
Andrea becomes angry when the school does not allow students to take part in a health survey because it has questions about sex. She decides to take her issue in front of the school board and lobbies for a program to distribute condoms at West Beverly Hills High.

Brandon becomes involved with Marcie St. Claire, the newest student at West Beverly. Marcie's father, Dixon, happens to be Jim's newest client who wants to tear down the Peach Pit in order to build a shopping center.
While at the Peach Pit late at night, Brenda is held up at gun point by a robber, which causes her to suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder following the incident.
David convinces Brenda, Kelly and Donna to go with him to the Bel Aire Hotel in order to meet the band Color Me Badd while they are in town on tour. Meanwhile, Brandon, Dylan and Steve hire an exotic dancer while Brandon has the house to himself.
After missing her curfew several times while staying out late with Dylan, Brenda is grounded and not allowed to go with him to Mexico for the weekend. However, Brenda decides to sneak away and go to Mexico and asks Kelly and Brandon to cover for her while she is away.
Following Brenda sneaking out to go to Mexico with Dylan, Brenda's father forbids her from seeing Dylan, which creates a large rift between Brenda and her parents.
Brandon spends the summer working for the Beverly Hills Beach Club where Andrea is also working as a child-care supervisor. Meanwhile, Brenda continues to see Dylan in secret against her parent's wishes, and ends up running away when her parents run into Brenda with Dylan at the beach club.
Brenda and Dylan find out the hard way that living together is harder than expected, but both are too stubborn to admit they're not happy. Kelly opts to stay home with her new sister instead of spending the summer in Paris, leading Jim to decide to send Brenda in her place in order to get her away from Dylan.
Brenda and Donna adjust to life in Paris, and quickly find their French isn't as good as they thought it was. Meanwhile, Andrea is camp counselor to a deaf child; Dylan and Kelly become closer; and Brandon becomes jealous when Andrea gets a new boyfriend.
Donna begins to feel jealous of Brenda and her classmates when she finds that they can all speak French better than she can. Back in Beverly Hills, Steve finds the perfect girl, Kelly and Dylan are paired up for the volleyball tournament; and David meets a young girl.
Kelly and Dylan spend the afternoon together jet skiing at Paradise Cove, while Brenda begins to fall for Rick who mistakes her for a French native. Meanwhile, Brandon helps a homeless war veteran; David hires Steve to help him with his musical career; and Andrea panics when Cameron, her deaf camper, is missing.
Brenda and Donna return from Paris and the gang throw them a welcome home party. Brandon's relationship with Brooke becomes strained when she continually makes racist comments; and Steve convinces the club to let David perform.
Brandon decides to quit The Blaze and Andrea asks the new English teacher to help her convince Brandon to change his mind about quitting. David's summer crush ends up enrolling at West Beverly High, but she soon sets her sights on Brandon instead. Meanwhile, the seniors are all assigned freshman buddies, and Brenda is paired with a girl trying to cope with her brother's death.
Beth Nielson, a reporter from the tabloid show Back Story, asks Brenda for help in making a documentary about life at West Beverly High. Brenda agrees, but is horrified when the show takes her comments out of context. Meanwhile, Steve gets a "legacy key" to West Beverly High.
With graduation nearing, the gang begins to stress over where they will be going to college in the next year. Brandon and Brenda's parents inform them that they can only afford to send one of them to an out-of-state college, causing a fight between the twins.
When two students from Shaw High, West Beverly High's arch rival, are shot by gang members during a football game, West Beverly opts to forfeit their game against Shaw. Meanwhile, Sue Scanlon develops a crush on David, much to Donna's dismay; and Dylan and Kelly go to the dance together.
Sue Scanlon claims that Gil Meyers sexually abused her, which leads to his suspension; however, Andrea soon finds there is more to the story than Sue is willing to admit. Meanwhile, Dylan sets out on a mission to clean up the bay after he contracts an infection while in the water.
Brenda has a chance run-in with Rick, her fling from Paris, and agrees to go out with him behind Dylan's back. Meanwhile, Andrea is injured in a hit-and-run accident; Nikki and Brandon are interviewed during an AIDS benefit by Rosie O'Donnell; David and Donna contemplate having sex; and Steve continues to misuse the legacy key.
Brenda tells Dylan he can date whoever he wants, but becomes jealous when she runs into Dylan and Kelly while out with Rick. Meanwhile, the police look into Steve's actions at West Beverly; and Andrea is released from the hospital but is confined to a wheelchair.
When Dylan’s car breaks down, the owner of a near-by ranch takes him to her house to use the phone, and surprises him when she offers him a permanent home on the ranch. After a terrible performance, David fires Steve for letting him go on without a sound check. Meanwhile, Steve worries that the janitor will turn him in for the break-in at the school and Brenda and Kelly make up after their fight.

The gang comes together to help Brandon make the choice that his best for him and his career. Valerie’s confession leads to serious consequences with her mother and goes to Matt for legal advice. Meanwhile, Noah has a sobering realization after blacking out from drinking and later thinking he was the drunk driver in a hit-and-run accident. Steve and Janet further their new relationship while Donna attempts to get Kelly and Matt together. Later, Valerie gives a heartfelt goodbye to the gang as she leaves Beverly Hills.
While the gang tries to find out where Dylan has been for three years and the reasons behind his return, Dylan helps David who is arrested. Meanwhile, Kelly learns her grandfather is terminally ill and has to go up against her mother in order to make a life-or-death decision. Matt and Dylan square off when both try to comfort Kelly in her time of need; Gina pretends to be acting in her cousin’s best interest, but has a secret motive: tearing Donna and Noah apart; and Steve learns about a secret his mother has been keeping.
Kelly’s grandfather passes away from emphysema and becomes angry at Matt when he agrees to work on behalf of a tobacco company, which leads to her being torn between her feelings for Matt and Dylan. Donna becomes friends with a young girl trying to escape her life in a gang while Gina finds a man to set her sights on. Meanwhile, Noah and Dylan clash when Steve’s mother comes out on David’s radio show.
Holiday spirit is in the air as the gang heads to a dance marathon for an AIDS charity. When Steve pledges more money than he can afford, he goes to all lengths, no matter how ridiculous, to stop anyone from winning the contest. Meanwhile, Gina’s jealous side shows when Noah asks her for help in throwing Donna a surprise birthday party; Kelly continues to be torn between Matt and Dylan; Donna’s store is robbed and her young former gang member friend is blamed; and Dylan battles with old demons.
