I didn't watch the first season, so I still feel a little lost on the backstory, etc., but I'm getting a feel for it, I think.
I'd been wondering what kind of religious background Margene had. Apparently, Catholic? And she hasn't really given it up. Interesting.
The Wayne storyline focused partly on one thing that fascinates me about the family - the mechanics of their "public" life. Bill can't publicly acknowledge his children with Nicki or Margene–unless they're far enough away for it to not be a threat. Nicki introduced herself as "Mrs. Henrickson" and I believe Wayne was referred to as Wayne Henrickson, but they can't actually have Bill's last name or else it would be suspicious, right? I don't know.
So 28-year-old Scott (Sarah's boyfriend) can date a high schooler, but he can't harbor a 16-year-old runaway without his cousin there. I do see that the latter is worse than the former, but it seemed like he was focused more on the lack of a chaperone considering her age than the harboring a manipulative religious freak underage runaway part.
One thing I love about the show is how sincere the characters are when they're in ridiculous situations. Bill: "Then get your wife to stop poisoning people!"* Joey: "I'm trying!"* And when Lois matter-of-factly and offhandedly answered her son's question about where his wife was with, "I had her committed to a mental institution."*
Another quote that doesn't qualify above but amused me nonetheless was Nicki: "Mama's mad at the necklace."*
* All quotes from memory, so probably not accurate. |
