US pop group, formed in 1966 with members Davy Jones (1945– , vocals, guitar), Mike Nesmith (1942– , vocals, guitar), Peter Tork (1944– , vocals, keyboards, bass guitar), and Micky Dolenz (1946– , drums). Created by the producers of the successful television show of the same name, the music was originally played by session musicians. Their first single, ‘Last Train To Clarkesville’ (1966), reached US number 1, and their second, ‘I'm A Believer’ (1966), written by Neil Diamond, was a transatlantic number 1 hit. In 1967 Nesmith insisted that The Monkees be allowed to play on their own records. Success continued until they finally split up in 1970. The group performed in a revival tour in 1996.
