History: Soifon was born Shaolin Fon (蜂 梢綾, Fon Shaolin) into the Fon house, one of the lower noble houses affiliated with the Shihouin noble house. The Fon house traditionally serves the Shihouin house by joining the special forces. Any member who doesn't pass the test to get into the special forces is immediately exiled from the family. Because of this, Shaolin has felt a lot of pressure to succeed since her youth. Though Shaolin and her five older brothers all got into the special forces, her first two brothers died on their first missions, her next two brothers died on their second missions, and her last brother died on his sixth mission. Upon her joining the special forces, she adopted her grandmother's codename: Soifon. In the anime, she did not adopt the name voluntarily — a family member gave her the name.

Soifon worked hard and was eventually promoted to become the head of the guard for the leader of the special forces at the time, Yoruichi Shihouin. Yoruichi took the young Soifon under her wing as her protégé, and they developed a close relationship. When Yoruichi eventually left Soul Society in disgrace to help her exiled friend Kisuke Urahara, she was stripped of all her titles. Soifon felt betrayed by Yoruichi's abandonment and the circumstances surrounding them. As a result, she trained herself in order to beat Yoruichi and take the titles she lost.

Soifon was promoted to the captaincy roughly 100 years prior to the start of the Bleach storyline, shortly after Yoruichi's departure from Soul Society.

Zanpakuto: Suzumebachi
Soifon's zanpakutō is Suzumebachi (雀蜂, lit. Hornet). In its sealed form, it resembles a wakizashi with a yellow hilt reminiscent of a Chinese dao. Unlike most shinigami, she wears it horizontally on her lower back. Its shikai is triggered by the command "Sting all enemies to death!" (尽敵螫殺, jinteki shakusetsu, Viz: "Spider enemy's killing strike", earlier translations: "Finish the enemy with your deadly sting!", "Kill instantly, exhaust quickly").

In its shikai, Suzumebachi shrinks into a stinger that is worn on the middle finger of Soifon's right hand. When Soifon stabs someone with Suzumebachi, a butterfly symbol called a hornet's crest (蜂紋華, hōmonka) spreads from the point of contact, its abdomen acting as the center. If Soifon stabs the same location again, her opponent dies, regardless of how powerful they may be. The crests are maintained by Soifon's will and are impossible to remove unless she wills it; when Yoruichi was still running the special forces, Soifon could only maintain the crests for half an hour.

In the anime's Bount arc, Soifon explains that Suzumebachi's ability is caused by a type of venom it secretes, which also acts as a handy counter-poison as well. The Bount arc also marks the first time she is seen killing someone with Suzumebachi. The Bount Mabashi manages to survive for slightly longer than two minutes when stabbed the second time, which can be attributed to Mabashi's enhanced power due to the large number of spirit particles in Soul Society.

He was banished from the Soul Society for creating an untraceable gigai, which also caused the spiritual power of the shinigami inside it to deteriorate. Also for Hōgyoku a decieve that can turn hollows into shinigami's or shinigami's into hollows.

He also made Tenshintai a doll for training for ban-kai.

Played shunpo tag with Byakuya Kuchiki when younger, and she is still the best at it. Also a master at hand-to-hand (hakuda) and demon arts (kid?). Made a technique is called shunk? (flash cry) and allows the user to concentrate high amounts of energy in different parts of their body and blast it at opponents.

Byakuya some time between that and marrying Hisana, became the 28th head of the Kuchiki clan. He married a commoner, and it was aganist the Kuchiki clan rules. 3 years later Hisana died of a mysterous diease. So ask Byakuya to take care of sister, and he takes another commoner into the Kuchiki clan to guard her and protect her no matter what. Thus breaking the rules again. A year later he found Rukia and took her into the Kuchiki clan.

He swore on his parents grave he would never break another rule no matter what happened. Even though he doesn't show it, he is very confused what to do, because he swore never to break a rule, but yet he would break his promise he made to Hisana.

History: Jūshirō is the eldest son from the low-class aristocratic Ukitake family. He has five brothers and two sisters, whom he essentially supports by himself. He, along with Shunsui Kyōraku, was one of the first graduates of Captain Yamamoto's academy. Furthermore, he was personally trained by Yamamoto. It is implied that he and Kyōraku are the oldest captains amongst the Gotei 13, with the exception of Yamamoto himself. Jūshirō, due to his illness, rarely played his role as captain on a regular basis, instead having Kaien fill the role under his guidance.

When a hollow possessed Kaien's wife, Miyako Shiba, Jūshirō and Kaien prevented the possessed Miyako from killing Rukia, and then chased her into the forest. The hollow discards her body before they catch up, and Kaien proceeded to battle the hollow alone. Jūshirō stopped Rukia from assisting, explaining that Kaien was fighting for his honor. The hollows abilities ultimately allow it to possess Kaien, and Jūshirō began to fight it, although his illness got in the way and allowed the hollow to attack Rukia. To both Jūshirō and Rukia's horror, Kaien took control and killed himself with Rukia's sword. The 13th Division has never been the same following Kaien's death, being without its well-loved lieutenant and Jūshirō having to rely on Kiyone Kotetsu and Sentarō Kotsubaki, which usually ends in disaster.

Jūshirō is a sickly looking man with long white hair. In volume 18 of the manga, it is revealed that the illness he suffers from is tuberculosis and his hair turned white three days after his illness surfaced. Although his body is weak, he often ingests a considerable amount of food, a classic symptom of tuberculosis. Jūshirō's favorite food is umeboshi-chazuke, and there are no foods he dislikes.

Jūshirō is respected by many, especially by his subordinates, for his honesty, loyalty, and personal sense of justice. The extent of his honor and respect is such that Yoruichi Shihouin leaves Rukia Kuchiki, Hanatarō Yamada, and Ganju Shiba behind when she rescues Ichigo Kurosaki from Byakuya Kuchiki, knowing that Jūshirō would not let any harm come to the three. Like Kaien, Jūshirō does not give up when he believes something is wrong and will break the rules if he must. He has been close friends with 8th Division captain Shunsui Kyōraku since his youth, and the two frequently work together.

Before the demise of Kaien Shiba, Jūshirō often left the daily operations of the 13th Division to Kaien because of his illness; this responsibility is now taken care of by his two current 3rd Seat officers, Kiyone Kotetsu and Sentarō Kotsubaki. To Jūshirō's chagrin, the two constantly compete over which is the better assistant. Jūshirō is the only captain who currently has no lieutenant.

Despite his illness, it is implied that Jūshirō is a powerful fighter. He is, along with Kyōraku, considered to be the one of strongest captains beside Yamamoto and Aizen. However, he is limited by his illness to fighting only for short periods of time; excessive action triggers fits of bloody coughing (another classic symptom of tuberculosis). The true extent of his abilities has not been seen in the series; however, he and Kyōraku both held their own against General Yamamoto for a prolonged period, and Yamamoto states that Jūshirō and Shunsui, both of whom he trained himself, possess "greater powers on the battlefield than any younger generation, or old."


Zanpakutō: Sōgyo no Kotowari
Jūshirō's zanpakutō is Sōgyo no Kotowari (双魚の理, lit. Truth of Pisces, Viz: Law of the Twin Fish). It is one of only two zanpakutō in Soul Society that exists as a pair, the other being Shunsui Kyōraku's Katen Kyōkotsu. Unlike Shunsui's zanpakutō, however, Sōgyo no Kotowari only splits into two swords when released, while Shunsui's zanpakutō constantly exists as a pair. Its shikai command is "every wave be my shield, every thunder become my blade" (波悉く我が盾となれ雷悉く我が刃となれ, nami kotogotoku waga tate to nare, ikazuchi kotogotoku waga yaiba to nare, Viz: "Wave, become my shield. Thunder, become my blade").

Shikai: In its shikai, Sōgyo no Kotowari splits into two thin blades resembling fishing javelins with a reversed prong-blade on the dull end. The two swords are connected by a cord, which is lined with several small charms. While Sōgyo no Kotowari's abilities go unseen in the series, they are depicted in a number of Bleach video games. In Bleach GC: Tasogare Ni Mamieru Shinigami, Sōgyo no Kotowari uses lightning and thunder-based abilities. In Bleach: The Blade of Fate, its special attacks involve water, light beams, and lightning orbs. In Bleach: Heat the Soul 3 and Bleach: Shattered Blade, Sōgyo no Kotowari uses similar combinations of water and electricity.

History: He was nameless, because he was born into the #80 district of the North Alley of Rukongai, which is the worst of the worst places in the Soul Society. Zaraki was the name of the district, so that is how he got his name. Also Kenpachi is the best swordsman, and that is how he got the other part of his name. He kept getting into fights, and one day he met his future Vice Captain Yachiru Kusajishi, he gave her the name of the of the district, Kusajishi, since she was nameless too.

Some time after that, they went to try out to become Shinigami's, and got in without taking the entrance exam. He later battled the 11th Division Captain, and killed him or her, took the robe and became the captain of that division.

Name: Kūkaku Shiba

History: Kūkaku is part of the former noble clan Shiba. Prior to the storyline, a hollow fused with her older brother Kaien, which forced Rukia Kuchiki to kill him.

Synopsis: Kūkaku is an ill-tempered fireworks expert who is particularly known for her ridiculously-themed houses and large breasts. During the Bount arc of the anime, she states that she is the same age as Kisuke Urahara. She wears a prosthetic right arm in the anime, which is at odds with her scenes in the manga, where she is illustrated with just a stump. She assists Ichigo and company by launching them via her special Kakaku Cannon so they can enter Seireitei.

Zanpukato: She does not seem to be a shinigami, but she knows high level kidō, and she carries a short-bladed sword on her back.

History: Komamura is very large in size, towering over all of the other captains. His head appears to be that of a canine, though there is some confusion to whether it is that of a wolf or a fox; He has been called a "bastard wolf" on occasion by Kenpachi Zaraki, but he has red fur like a fox, so further clarification is required.

Komamura was initially very self-conscious regarding his appearance. He hid his spiritual pressure whenever possible so that others wouldn't pay attention to his appearance. He often wears gloves and a form of covering for his head - cloth headwear in his early days, and a bamboo helm in his captain position. After his fight with Kenpachi Zaraki later in midst of the drifter invasion of Soul Society, he gained enough confidence to remove the helm. Komamura has a close friendship with Tōsen, and was very shocked when the latter chose to side with Sōsuke Aizen, feeling that his friend had abandoned his morals. Komamura later decides to awaken Tōsen with his own hands.

Zanpakutō: Komamura's zanpakutō is Tenken (天譴, lit. Heaven's Sword, Viz: Sword of Heavenly Retribution). Its shikai command is "roar" (轟け, todoroke). In its shikai, Tenken creates various body parts of a giant to copy whatever body part Komamura moves; for example, should Komamura swing his sword, a gigantic disembodied arm wielding a sword appears and does the same thing. Tenken's bankai, Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō (黒縄天譴明王, lit. Heavenly Punishment of Kokujō's King, Viz: Divine Retribution, Black Ropes of Ruination) brings forth the entire giant. Like in the shikai, the giant copies every movement made by Komamura.

History: Hitsugaya comes from Junrinan, District 1 of Rukongai. There he lived with his grandmother and Momo Hinamori. He was also a friend of Jidanbō, the West Gate Keeper, who taught him the "city rules." Shortly after Hinamori left to become a shinigami, Hitsugaya ran into Rangiku Matsumoto, who recognized his potential and convinced him to become a shinigami.

As a child, Hitsugaya was a bit of a brat who liked to eat watermelons and poke fun at Hinamori. She would call him "Shiro-chan" (Lil' Shiro in the English dub) and he would retort by calling her "Bed-wetter Momo." The two were close friends and Hitsugaya, despite being younger and much shorter than his friend, always felt that he needed to protect her.

With Hitsugaya's natural talent, he quickly entered the shinigami institute shortly after Hinamori, despite his age. She continued to call him "Shiro-chan" out of habit and felt she needed to protect him. Because of a promise she had made, she only began to call him "Hitsugaya-kun" after he had achieved his zanpakutō's shikai and was recognized as a shinigami. Highly capable and knowledgeable, he quickly became the youngest of the captains within the Gotei 13

Zanpakutō: Hyōrinmaru
Hitsugaya's zanpakutō is Hyōrinmaru (氷輪丸, lit. "Ice Ring", idiomatically "Full Moon"). When sealed, Hyōrinmaru looks almost exactly like a normal zanpakutō with the exception of the guard, which is in the shape of a four-pointed star. The hilt is light-blue while the sheath is a deep blue, which matches Hyōrinmaru's abilities. Hyōrinmaru's shikai command is "sit upon the frosted heavens" (霜天に坐せ, sōten ni zase, Viz: "reign over the frosted heavens," English TV: "reign over the frosted frozen sky"). Hyōrinmaru is the strongest of all water-ice element zanpakutō in Soul Society.

Hitsugaya is the only shinigami that carries his zanpakutō on his back aside from Ichigo Kurosaki, whose zanpakutō necessitates such a style. Hitsugaya's short stature and the blade's length may explain the similar style. His sheath dissolves whenever he draws his sword. Hitsugaya is also one of the three shinigami whose zanpakutō spirit has been seen. Hyōrinmaru's spirit is a large, winged, Chinese dragon.

Shikai: In its shikai, Hyōrinmaru itself remains the same, but gains a crescent-shaped blade attached to the hilt by a chain. Hyōrinmaru allows Hitsugaya to control water and ice. The slashes created by Hyōrinmaru gives off an immense amount of spirit power which overflows from the tip of the blade, creating a flow of ice vaguely shaped like Hyōrinmaru's dragon spirit. The dragon flies at opponents and instantly freezes anything it touches. The chain-blade also freezes anything Hitsugaya traps with it.

Bankai: Daiguren Hyōrinmaru

Hyōrinmaru's bankai, named Daiguren Hyōrinmaru (大紅蓮氷輪丸, lit. Great Crimson Lotus (Mahāpadma) Ice Ring, Viz: Great Roaring Coldly Shining Moon), causes ice to flow from Hyōrinmaru onto Hitsugaya, forming into two large wings and a tail. Ice also forms into a dragon's head around his sword hand, encasing it up to the hilt; which is in the shape of an eight-pointed star. His left arm is covered fully until the wrist where it then spans into claws, leaving his hand and fingers free. Hitsugaya's feet are encased in ice in a similar manner to his left hand. Additionally, his wings are capable of folding around him to serve as ice shields. In various Bleach games, as well as in the anime, the wings can be used by Hitsugaya to fly. Three "flowers" of ice, shaped similarly to the lotus shaped guard of his zanpakutō, are also created behind Hitsugaya with four petals each, which melt away as Hitsugaya attacks.

Hyōrinmaru's bankai has two known special techniques. The first is "dragon hail flower" (竜霰花, ryūsenka), which freezes any enemy Hitsugaya stabs, locking them into a cocoon of ice and freezing them to the core. Once frozen, Hitsugaya can shatter his opponent. The second is "thousand years ice prison" (千年氷牢, sennen hyōrō), which forms a multitude of ice pillars using the moisture in the atmosphere. These pillars then envelop the enemy.
