The origin of Ukitake's quote in episode 9 about the two kinds of fights, the fight for life and the fight for pride, is featured in this episode. We find out who finally said and what was happening.

We finally see Ukitake Jyuushiro's mysterous diease.

The hollow in this episode had two different types of abilities. One is when you touch it, you lose your zanpaku-to. And the other is merging with a spirit type body, and eating them from the inside.

We finally learn why there is 12 Vice Captains (remember Ichigo and Renji's 2nd battle). It is because Kaien was turned into a hollow.

Sentarou: Corny!
Kiyone: Oh my, you're so cool, Kaien-sama!

Kaien: Kiyone! Sentarou! You two were off getting drunk on you own again, weren't you?

Kaien: How many Death gods have you eaten so far?
Hollow: Well now, how many. Sorry, but I don't remember the number.
Kaien: Have you regretted it even once?
Hollow: That's a stupid question, my boy. I have a heart just like you people. There hasn't been a night I haven't regretted after eating Death gods. Even now, I do regret I didn't manipulate that woman Death god more before eating her.

Kaien slices the Hollow's tentacles and grabs one of them.
Hollow: You're fast. But...you touched it.
