The scene opens with a man walking through the streets. He walks into a store and gives the owner cans and the owner gives him a beer and a bagel. He walks out and walks by a club. Inside the club, three men are celebrating and taking shots. The homeless man, from earlier, is sitting and looking at a start medal. He is having flashbacks from the war when the three men exit the club. They look at the homeless man and start to harass him. He says that he doesn’t want any problems. One of the men asks about the star medal and tells that the medal doesn’t belong to him. They hit him and one of the men hit the homeless man in the head with a bat. A homeless girl is watching the entire thing. The three men run off laughing.

The next day, Danny and Curatola arrive on scene and asks who the man was. Danny walks up to the victim and sees a Marine tattoo. The guy is a Marine with dog tags that say James Phelps. However, the victim is not James Phelps because James died in Afghanistan. Frank and Henry are having morning coffee when Erin walks in. She says that she is going to ride in with Frank. She shows a clipping from Ray Cursten saying that Frank is running for Mayor. Erin says that the Mayor is behind this. She says that he shouldn’t do anything. She asks that he is not that type of person and asks what he is going to do, but Frank is not going to say. At the station, Curatola is having trouble finding the identity of the victim. The man who found the homeless man comes in and says that a homeless woman also stays in the alley and he works with a sketch artist to give the identity of Sissy, the homeless woman. They get an ID on the victim. Michael Oats is an ex-marine. Kimberly Lane is his emergency contact.
Danny visits Kimberly and she says that Michael was in and out of therapy for PDSD. She shows his medals and says that only one he kept was a Silver Star medal. She says that he would have never let that go. She tells that James Phelps was Michael’s friend who died in the war. Baker tells Frank that the press secretary is on vacation and Frank says that he needs 5 minutes. Frank calls Danny and asks how he is holding up with the case. He says that he is fine and Frank says that if he gets too involved, he needs to spend time with his wife and kids. He agrees. Jamie and Renzulli post up pictures of Sissy up around town and Jamie says that he was in Europe when he was in his Junior Year. Meanwhile, Curatola and Danny go to the club and the bar tender tells that there was a party for the Cassidy Group. Ian Seroy is the VP of Communications and one of the men that were there when Michael was killed. They go to the build site and ask for Ian. Mark Faylen turns around and says that he didn’t show up today. They ask for his address and Mark reaches for it. Danny sees his hand wrapped up and asks what happened. Mark says that he got dinged. However, Danny doesn’t believe his story at all. They go to the address and find Ian trying to leave.

They take him down to the station and swab for his DNA. Danny calls Ian a killer and Ian cracks under the pressure and tells that Mark and Troy Cassidy. He says that everything went out of control and that he didn’t mean to kill anyone. Frank goes into a restaurant and sits down with Ray and says that he is going to guess and he tells him to nod if he is right. Frank guesses that it was the Mayor’s new Press Secretary. Danny and Curatola go to the building site and takes Troy into custody. Danny sits down with him in the interview room and says that he is going to be put into jail for a long time. Troy is not worried. His lawyers get there and Danny puts Troy in lockup. However, Erin says that she needs more if she is going to be able to try Troy for the murder of Michael. She says that he has a day. Danny and Curatola drive and see Mark in a car. Mark takes off and Danny chases after him. They take him to the station and say that they found DNA at the crime scene and Mark says that Michael was begging them and Ian started punching him. He joined in. Mark says that Troy wasn’t even there.
Curatola comes in and says that they have DNA on Mark, but none on Troy. Danny sees phone records between Mark and Troy and says that they were trying to get their stories strait. However, it is not enough. The Sergeant comes in and says that there have been numerous assault complaints against Troy, but all of them were dropped. Meanwhile, Frank meets with Sue Conners again and tells that he knows about how the Mayor is trying to make himself look better with the announcement of Frank running for Mayor and tells that they are going to need to make sure that people know that it is not true. Later that night, Jamie finds Sissy on the streets and tells her to come with him. They escort her to the station and she points out the three men in the alley and tells that they had a baseball bat that Troy hit Michael with them still. However, on the stand, Sissy is going to be torn apart.
At dinner, Erin says that she is going to go against Troy’s lawyers and all of them are former prosecutors. Henry comes in with Cheesecake and Danny says that it is a tough case to shake when his wife asks if things are alright. His kids ask if he is going to catch the bad guys and Danny tells that he is going. He walks off and Frank says that when you see yourself in a victim, it eats away. Later that night, Danny tells his wife that he had a sprained ankle when he was in Iraq and another soldier went on a run instead. A sniper killed him and Danny says that could have been him. The next day, Danny tells that he doesn’t have a badge or gun on and pushes Troy. Police officers come up and hold Danny back. Frank and Henry talk to Danny and say that he is lucky that the cops were old school. Frank tells that if Danny can’t keep his emotions in check, he will sit him down. Danny goes back to the station and goes through some evidence. He sees that there is a Taxi receipt inside. He runs off to talk to the Taxi Company.

Later that day, Sue tells what is going to happen and Frank tells that the Mayor is going to tell the press about the lie that he made about Frank. The Mayor says that he is not going to do that and reminds Frank on who he works for and that Commissioner is an appointed position. Danny and Curatola meet with the Taxi Company and one of the men says that Troy dumped a bag in the dumpster. Inside it, Danny finds Troy’s jacket with blood on it and the Silver Start that belonged to Michael. He goes up to where Troy is and shows his evidence. He tries to arrest him, but Troy fights back. Danny almost loses, but recovers in the end and almost kills Troy. Curatola arrests Troy. At Michael’s funeral, Kimberly and Sissy watch and Danny and Frank watch from a distance. Danny tells that if he didn’t have his family, that would have been him.
