A series prequel spin-off, Ponderosa (which was an alternative name to the series), aired on PAX during the 2001-2002 season.

The majority of the episodes were sponsored by Chevrolet.

Bonanza was broadcast in color in order for RCA (who owned NBC) to increase sales of color television sets.
