The Doll In The Derby - Recap

<-- Previous EpisodeNext Episode -->
The episode begins with two security guards talking a big game, but they quickly turn to screaming and shouting when they discover a horribly mutilated body and a giant pool of blood. Next, Bones and Booth are on their way to the crime scene when Booth says he is heading to the hospital. Bones offers help. But Booth tells her that this is his thing and he will be fine. Later, the two arrive on the scene. Cam tells them that there were rookies sent at the scene and one of them ended up rolling on the remains! Hodges states that he TOD is about eight hours ago. The victim is a female and she was put in a liquid, very caustic in nature; it burnt the skin off her. The murder weapon appears to be a cross cut saw to dismember the body.

The body is melting and so Cam decides to preserve the tissue by using water on it. Bones is against it as she could lose several fragments due to this. Back at the lab, Hodgins announces that it is Wendell's birthday. He is 29 and feeling awkward about it because he hasn't accomplished enough, apparently. So, of course, Hodgins teases him mercilessly. The victim's remains, meanwhile, show signs of domestic abuse. The victim is missing three front teeth and is using a bridge. Cam states that the serial number on the bridge could provide them with an id. Booth learns that the victim’s name is Melinda Perkins and she has a husband, Bradley Perkins. Booth wants Sweets to talk to her husband.

Angie tells Brenan that Melinda was wearing a high tech fancy watch which stopped at 12:29 a.m. and shows a high heart rate before death. Booth calls and Angie wants to know what is going on. But Brenan tells her that she cannot discuss it with her. Sweets interviews the woman's husband, who is a trauma surgeon. They've been separated for one year. Sweets tells him about the signs of physical abuse and the surgeon tells him that he doesn’t beat up ex-wives but instead look for new viable candidates for a new one. He says that he was at the hospital at the time of the murder. Booth and Bones track Melinda’s last position before her death by using the GPS in her watch. They discover a roller derby rink . About two dozen skate around the track, throwing hips and elbows.

The victim was on the team. They meet Nick Benet, the coach and Susan Carol, a teammate. They tell them that they played a match last night and the whole team is like family. So it is the repeated trauma from the roller blade sport that was interpreted as domestic abuse. Another player, Ivana, has also gone missing. Back the lab, Hodgins and Wendell theorize that the victim was beaten with a skate. The conversation turns to bucket lists -- it being Wendell's birthday and all -- and the intern accidentally lets it slip that he posed naked for artist Angela. Angela goes to Cam and asks about Booth, who went to the hospital for reasons nobody seems to know. Cam too doesn’t know what is happening with Booth.

Cam then finds plenty of drugs in the victim's system; party drugs. Booth brings in Ivana for questioning. Ivana tells Booth that Melinda lived a pretty wild life. she used to have a lot of drugs and guys. She had sex with this one guy in her ex-husband’s lawn! Booth, Brenan and Sweets discuss about hetting into the rink for evidence. But a warrant would be a viable option. So someone needs to get inside the rink. Angela volunteers. Posing as "Smackie Kennedy," she heads to tryouts for the Dirty Dolls team. A montage of skating, hitting, and falling later, Angie earns a spot on the roster. In the locker room, she starts examining skates with a black light looking for blood spatters. Unfortunately, there is blood on all the skates.

It's a violent game, after all. Susan tells her that she needs to be very careful about her valuables as they tend to go missing all the time. Later, Angela and Susan then go out for a drink. At the lab, Cam asks Brenan about Booth but Brenan tells her that she is not allowed to talk about it. She then goes to check the bones that Wendell has managed to isolate from the mixed remains. He tells Brenan that the murder weapon was a wood saw. Nick had told them that he built the wooden track himself. Cam deduced that the victim was stabbed before death. Meanwhile, Susan and Angie are having drinks and Booth arrives and Angela pretends they boyfriend and girlfriend. When Susan passes out from too many beers, Angela tells Booth that she has found out that Nicky was accused by the victim of skimming money from ticket sales.

Booth brings in Nicky for questioning. Nicky, in turn, accuses the victim of robbing the team. He then admits he was sleeping with the dead woman. They were at a bar a few nights before he death and ran into Perkins. She threw a drink at her ex-husband after trying to make him jealous. They called it off after that. Cam then heads to the hospital to inquire about Booth, but the doctor won't spill medical secrets. The doctor is a specialist who treats a genetic disorder that leads to brain tumors in children. Is Christine ill? Again, the doctor won't say. Back at the lab, Wendell tells Hodgins that his brother had bet on the fact that when Wendell would be 29, he would still be a loser.

He then tells Hodgins that the victim was carved up with a wood saw. It also appears that the victim was given what appears to CPR after death. Bones determines that the chest compressions were performed to pump blood out of the severed arteries. Only someone with knowledge of anatomy could possibly know about this. Melinda’s husband was a surgeon. So, Booth brings in Burns for a few more questions. He denies any involvement in his ex-wife's death; and then requests a lawyer. Back at the lab, Hodgins and Wendell find fluid on the victim's shirt consistent with eyeball fluid. So the dead woman was stabbed in the eyes. And additional materials reveal it was done with keys. Burns has no keys; his house is equipped with touch pads.

So Booth and Brenan go to the rink and collect keys from all the coach and all the ladies to check for blood. Ivana's keys are a match. As a physical therapist, she knew a bit of anatomy. She admits that she killed her teammate for stealing from the team. Everyone is shocked. Case closed. Later, Hodgins and Angela take Wendell out for drinks for his birthday. He brings the nude painting of himself; with boxer shorts drawn over his unmentionables. Everybody has a good laugh. Next, we learn that Booth was at the hospital because he was organizing a carnival for all of the children with the genetic condition. Brenan brings Cam to the carnival. So Christine isn't sick. Booth was just doing a good deed and didn't want anybody to know. The episode ends.
