The scene opens with Mayor Tom Kane sitting in a chair at a factor. Dr. Ella Harris meets with him and tells him that he has a degenerative disease and he has about 3-5 years left to live. A drug called “Eldopa” will possibly give him more years, but it is not certain. She tells him that he should talk to his family. He thanks Ella for meeting him out in a factory rather then her office. She tells him that she understands. Kane calls up someone and tells them that he is ready. In his car, he cries. He comes to a meeting and is meets his secretary, Lotty O’Neill waiting for him. Kane gives a speech to the public. He is speaking on behalf current Governor, McCall Cullen. He talks about how Chicago is a pioneer city and that Cullen is going to help continue that it is. Meanwhile, a crew is digging up a cemetery. They are told to dig up the land without disrupting the graves. ..
