After 8 seasons of the hit show, "The Practice", "Boston Legal" brings a whole new look at the legal system in Boston. Alan Shore (James Spader), Tara Wilson (Rhona Mitra), Sally Heep (Lake Bell) and Denny Crane (William Shatner) all appeared on the last season of "The Practice" and are all part of Crane, Poole, & Schmidt, the biggest firm in Boston. Welcome Brad Chase (Mark Valley) who has transferred from another CP&S firm. Also, there is Lori Colson (Monica Potter), one of the highly regarded lawyers at the firm, and Paul Lewiston (Rene Auberjonois), one of the Senior Partners. In the middle of the season Shirley Schmidt (Candice Bergen) comes to try and keep the chaos at a minimum at CP&S. She fires Sally within a week of her coming, and the firm seems to be settling down since her arrival.

Highlights from the first season include Edwin Poole entering a mental institution, Alan representing an ex-lover who wanted to kill him, a city banning of red meat because of Mad Cow Disease, the famous Milton Bombay wanting to be frozen, and Alan Shore heading to Texas to save a man wrongly accused of murder.

Notable guest stars include Kerry Washington, Chi McBride, Betty White, Leslie Jordan, Larry Miller, Freddie Prinze, Jr., Carl Reiner, Philip Baker Hall, and Elizabeth Mitchell.
