Ezekiel Stone returns to Earth after fifteen years and must track down the first escaped soul: a demented priest who believes that killing children and “sending them to Heaven” is the only way to bring about the Apocalypse.
Stone leaves New York and heads to L.A., where he discovers his wife Rosalyn now lives. He also must track down another escapee, a woman who was raped and went to Hell for killing her attackers. Now she has the power to channel Hell's fire.
Stone is on the trail of a rapist, and discovers that it's his wife's attacker, Gilbert Jax. To complicate things, the Devil has added an additional condition on Stone sending Jax back to Hell... and hasn't told Ezekiel what it is.
Stone is sent to track down a World War II Nazi collaborator who escaped from Hell. However, despite a series of grisly murders in the vicinity, Ezekiel begins to wonder if the man he's after truly deserves to go back to Hell.
Stone is on the trail of a Chinese poet who kills young Chinese women, and leaves Chinese ideograms as clues to his ultimate plan.
An inmate turns vigilante, killing criminals with his electrical powers.
A Carthaginian warrior, Hasdrabul Skaras, tries to convert Stone to his cause. When Stone refuses, Skaras tries to force him by attacking the widows of police officers.
The most dangerous of the escaped inmates goes after religious buildings, burning them to the ground. Meanwhile, Stone becomes romantically involved with Detective Ash, but is reluctant to get to close without revealing his secret life.
Hell's inmate Paco comes back to find his girlfriend Jocelyn, and together they go on a crime spree.
Sally Ann McGee, the original Typhoid Mary, has escaped from hell and only wants to party. But her infection has grown stronger for her being in Hell, and now she poses a deadly threat to all of Los Angeles... and Stone when she infects him.
While tracking down an inmate, Ezekiel becomes involved with an abused boy who is more then what he seems.

It's Valentine's Day, which is particularly depressing for Ezekiel. Even more so when he discovers Rosalyn is dating a new man. And worse of all when Ezekiel discovers her new boyfriend is one of the Hell escapees.
