Show FAQ
How many souls escaped from Hell? How many are left?
113 souls escaped from Hell. Over the course of the series, Stone sent at least 11 souls back. Martin Benedict, in "Repentance," may or may not have returned to Hell as he sacrificed himself to save Stone from failure on his mission, and the effect that accompanies his departure is different than the other souls. Out of 13 episodes, Stone sends back two souls in one episode, and no souls in two episodes.

What do the tattoos on Stone's body represent?
Each one represents one of the 113 escaped souls. The name of the soul is written in "the Devil's own tongue." When a soul is sent back to Hell, the tattoo disappears in a brief and painful burst of smoke.

How can one send a soul back to Hell?
By destroying the eyes, the "windows to the soul." Bullets can be used, but any sharp object will suffice.

What the significance of $36.27 in Stone's pocket?
When a soul is killed, it returns to Earth only with what it possessed at the moment of its death. However, the personal possessions are renewed each day. Since Stone only had $36.27 in his pockets when he died, each day he starts with $36.27.

As an in-joke, Ezekiel 36:27 says the following: "And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgements, and do them." Thus summing up the Devil's instructions to Stone.

Presumably Stone' s gun also regenerated bullets each day, to the amount he had when he died. This has never been clearly demonstrated or described, however.

Stone's clothing doesn't appear to regenerate, since the rip in his coat caused during the events of "Poem" doesn't regenerate itself.

Can a soul on Earth be harmed?
Not by any natural Earthly force. A soul can harm another soul, however. They can do so directly with their bare hands, or by wielding a weapon, even a long-range one. The one exception is that even a mortal can destroy an escaped soul's eyes and send them back to Hell.

Why is the Devil dressed in white and helping Stone in "It's a Helluva Life"?
That isn't the Devil, it's an Angel. As the Angel notes, humans and human souls see their first divine being, and all subsequent ones they meet appear to look the same. Since Stone saw the Devil first, any angel, demon or other divine being he meets will look like the Devil.

Why do all the souls have superpowers except for Stone?
As the Devil notes, the longer a soul is in the Hell, the more of its power they absorb. Stone was only in Hell 15 years, and gathered very little power. The willingness of the soul to embrace Hell's power also seems to make a difference: Gilbert Jax was in Hell only a little longer than Stone but had much more power.

Haven't I seen that "destroy the eyes and send them back to Hell" thing somewhere else?
Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris, the creators of Brimstone, also wrote Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight (1995). In that movie, demons could be sent back to Hell by destroying their eyes. The idea of a suave charismatic Devil is found in both materials. And Tim DeZarn played Homer in Demon Knight, and also appeared in "Executioner."

I'm confused? How did Stone end up in Hell? How long was he there?
Stone's wife Rosalyn was raped by Gilbert Jax in 1983. Stone made it appear that Jax died in a drug overdose.

Two months later, Stone was shot and killed in an (apparently) unrelated incident. He went to Hell for murdering a criminal who had only committed rape.

He was in Hell for 15 years, until 1998, when the escape occurred and the Devil chose Stone to return the prisoners.

So why doesn't the Devil bring the souls back himself?
The Devil (and presumably God) have no direct power on Earth. They can talk to individuals on Earth, they can try to influence them, they can even project illusions (as the Devil does with Stone in "It's a Helluva Life"), but they cannot take any direct physical action against a human or a soul.

If souls can harm each other, can they harm the Devil?
Souls on Earth have no ability to harm the Devil, or presumably angels as well. Stone attempts to shoot the Devil in "It's a Helluva Life" and at best it temporarily inconveniences the Prince of Darkness.

Who engineered the prisoners' escape from Hell?
Ashur Badaktu, a priestess of the pagan goddess Asherah The Serpent Queen. She was killed in 2002 B.C. by worshipers of Yahweh and condemned to Hell. Although she remained faithful to her Goddess, she was judged by Yahweh's rules. It is suggested that she was romantically involved with the Devil and took advantage of his weakness to engineer the escape.

Why does Rosalyn look different in the first episode?
As is often the case, the pilot was filmed months before the series proper goes into production. Genevieve Langlois played the character in the pilot, which was filmed in New York. When filming moved to Los Angeles for the series, Stacy Haiduk was recast in the role.
