Brief Encounter - Recap

Sarah is on the phone with Diane and tells her she wishes she could help
her, but there are none left. Paige is all excited about Luc’s launch
party, because there are going to be tons of celebrities there. Kevin
calls and says he needs two more tickets, but Sarah gives him the same
answer she gave Diane. Kitty calls, and Sarah LOVES her for not knowing
“that thing” is tonight.

Kitty reminds Sarah that mom keeps disappearing for hours, and when she
reappears she’s all cagey about where she’s been. So 5:00 this morning,
she goes past mom’s room. The bed is made, and Kitty is wondering if
Nora slept in it at all. Sarah asks if Kitty thinks Nora is having a
secret affair, and Kitty said it did cross her mind. Sarah says no,
there must be another explanation, but she has to end the call, because
Kevin is beeping in again. He’s desperate for a ticket. Paige takes a
call from the boy she’s crushed on, Andrew Simms. She starts to ask Luc
if he can get one more ticket, and Sarah interrupts to say absolutely not.

Scotty calls Luc at the same time as Kevin calls Sarah. She grabs the
phone from Luc and talks on both at the same time, telling Scotty to
tell Kevin that no means no. Paige is telling a friend that her mom is
ruining her life because she won’t let Andrew Simms have a ticket for
the launch party. Sarah takes the phone away from her and tells Monique
and Ashley (on hold) and Kevin goodbye, and hangs up on everybody.

Nora walks in bearing flowers, and chats with Justin about the rut that
Kitty is in. She suggests he go house hunting with her. Kitty walks in
and asks Nora why she was out so early. Nora says she went to the gym,
and Kitty asks since when is she a member. Nora says she needs to bring
Saul some of her crab soup and bolts out the door. Kitty says that was
weird, but Justin says “Mom’s always weird”. When Justin calls Kitty on
her Nora fixation, she switches it to him. He says he’s going to
Holly’s. Kitty says maybe she’ll remember him, but Justin sort of hopes
she doesn’t because then at least one member of that family won’t hate
him. Kitty wishes him luck.

Nora arrives at Saul’s, on the phone with her boss. She tells her she
was at the flower market at 5:00 a.m. and she picked up every single
orchid that they had. She says the launch party isn’t until 6:00
tonight, and her boss is going to have to trust her on how she’s
handling this.

She calls out to Saul and Scotty, but nobody answers. She hears a
strange noise and grabs a knife. She and Mateo both come up screaming
and waving a knife at each other.

Kevin and Scotty confront Mateo about why he’s there. Kevin and Mateo go
back and forth about whether him attempting to pry open the cash
register is a felony or a misdemeanor, based on whether it’s a business
or residence. Mateo says he’s only 14 as a way to trump the
conversation. Nora waves Kevin off to discuss Mateo’s situation with
him. She tells him Mateo lost his mother when he was seven, and he’s
never had a strong maternal figure in his life. Kevin gets that she’s
gone into nurturing mode, and so he asks her to step away from the kid,
get back in her car and drive home. She looks at Kevin, turns around and
announces “I found him, so I will be responsible for him.” She says they
need to go talk to his father, tell him what Mateo did, and decide how
to handle it. Scotty says he’s going along for her protection. Kevin
protests but Scotty knows Nora’s mind is made up. They start walking
out, and Kevin says he’ll drive.

Luc is doing crunches, but the noise is very distracting. Sarah asks him
to tone it down, and they banter a bit. Paige’s friend Agatha calls, and
Sarah answers because she likes Aggie. But it’s not her, it’s her mom
and she’s reporting on Paige. Sarah says she’ll talk to her.

Holly and Justin are chatting. He tells her he’s there to talk to her
and David about Rebecca. She has some pictures that she looks at as
therapy. She doesn’t remember Rebecca. He thinks he should be in the
pictures but it turns out he’s not. David says he wants to talk to
Justin alone, but Holly gets upset because she has a right to be there.
Holly’s not going anywhere, so Justin starts talking. He says he let
Rebecca down. David counters that Justin ran out on her. Justin says no;
he had to go. He couldn’t help himself, or Rebecca or anybody after the
accident. He says he told her he loved her before he left, and now he
needs their help to find her so he can save his marriage. Holly is
confused, and she thinks that it’s her fault that they aren’t together
anymore, that it’s something she did. David tries to reassure her at the
same time as he blames Justin for all the pain he’s caused their family.

Everybody arrives at Mateo’s house. His dad isn’t home, so Nora wants to
leave a note. The place is a dump. Mateo goes to check Dad’s room for
paper, and goes out the window.

Nora comes in talking on the phone. Evan and Kitty were going house
hunting, and she invites Nora to join them. She won’t tell Kitty what
happened, She hangs up on a cell phone call, and her boss calls right
back on the house phone. Mrs. Powell is crying because Nora was supposed
to be there at 3:00. However, Nora thought she was supposed to be there
at 6:00. She tells her boss she’ll be there in 15 minutes. Kitty is
eavesdropping when Nora says “I thought you understood me wanting to
keep this private.” She’s referring to the fact that she has a job,
while Kitty thinks it’s an affair. She heads out the door. Kitty follows
her.

Sarah is confronting Paige about no longer speaking to Aggie. She also
called her stupid, and while she didn’t say it to her face, it did get
back to her. Paige says Agatha is a baby, she wears a Hello Kitty
backpack and just wants to make friendship bracelets all day. Sarah says
Paige shouldn’t get to go to the party, but Luc intercedes. If Paige
apologizes to Agatha, then she can go to the party. Sarah says that’s an
excellent idea, and there’s no time like the present.

Nora arrives at her floral job. Kitty assumes her mother is a lesbian,
and calls Kevin to share the news. He’s not home, so she leaves a
message on the voice mail.

It’s time for the launch party, and Sarah and Paige arrive. Luc kisses
them hello. Paige thinks she sees Paris Hilton and she and Luc go to
check it out while Sarah waits for the rest of the family.

Kevin tells Kitty it’s not possible. Anybody else, even her; but mom is
NOT a lesbian. Scotty reminds Kevin that it’s not unusual for women to
have lesbian conversions later in life. Kitty says it’s true, but Kevin
disagrees. Scotty uses Kevin’s phone to look up senior citizen lesbians,
but accidentally downloads senior citizen lesbian porn. Kitty is trying
to help him close the site when Justin walks up. Kevin gets a call from
the police.

Sarah greets Nora. Paige bring by her new friend, Laila. Sarah wants the
family to see Paige’s beautiful dress, but Paige wants to introduce her
new friend to Luc. Laila grabs a drink off the bar and shares it with Paige.

David is showing Holly the wedding photo album. She recognizes and
remembers Justin. She’s tired. She says Rebecca and Justin are gone, and
David is her family. He’s hoping she will develop a sense of what kind
of person her daughter is. She tells him she can’t feel something that
she doesn’t feel.

The police were calling about Mateo. He told them that Kevin was his
attorney. Kitty tells Nora she thought maybe she’d bring a date. Nora
says don’t be ridiculous, she’s not interested in men whatsoever. Sarah
told Nora that they all know her secret, and they are all okay with it.
Except the men all say they don’t like it. They finally set the record
straight. She works at Zoey’s flowers. Paige comes and grabs Sarah,
because she’s been drinking and she doesn’t feel so good.

Paige is in the ladies room and won’t let Sarah in. Kitty and Nora are
discussing why she didn’t tell them she had a job. Sarah tells Justin he
should go meet one of those beautiful women at the party. Kevin says
Mateo is fine, he’s going to spend the night in jail. Nora finally snaps
and tells the whole family she’s sick of them. She asks Kevin when he
became so jaded that he’d leave a 14 year-old boy in jail overnight. She
says they both know it’s not about the money; Mateo doesn’t have anybody
to take care of him. As for Justin, he needs to act like a husband. A
good husband, who will take care of his wife’s family even when she can’t.

Kitty says Nora might want to take it down a notch, but Nora disagrees
and points out that living in limbo is a life unlived. She needs to take
the first steps, even if they are small and in no particular direction.
Sarah says she nailed Kitty. So Nora points out that she is Paige’s
mother, not her friend, and she had no business bringing her to this
party. Now she needs to tell Paige to unlock the damn door so she can
bring her home.

A man at the bar tells Nora what she did was really impressive. He’s
putting together a talk radio advice show and he thinks Nora would be
perfect. He gives her his card. She says she’s speechless, but that
would never happen on the radio because that would be bad.

Luc comes home, he feels badly about what happened to Paige. Sarah says
she made the wrong decision letting Paige go to the party, and she
thinks she did it because she’s jealous of his relationship with Paige.
Luc blames himself. But Sarah reiterates that she’s her mother, and it’s
up to her to set up the boundaries.

Kevin and Mateo are sparring over why Mateo had them call him. Because
he did nothing wrong, he doesn’t need a lawyer. His dad should have been
called, but he asked for Kevin. Kevin asks if Mateo is scared of his
dad, and he responds “Only when he’s around.” Kevin says if he needs
help, all he has to do is ask. Mateo says Kevin is not the easiest
person to ask, as he is kind of cranky. Mateo asks for help and Kevin
says he will do everything he can, but Mateo has to trust him, and he
has to be able to trust Mateo. So no more jumping out of windows. Mateo
agrees. As they are leaving, Kevin apologizes for being late getting
there tonight, as he got a little lost on the way.

Justin arrives and David lets him in. They both attempt to apologize,
and Justin says he’s there to help Holly. She doesn’t really remember
him, but she’s comfortable with him.

Nora talks to Kitty about hearing her own music and stepping to her own
inner beat. Kitty shows Nora that she found a place she’s renting for a
few months. It’s in Ojai. Nora says she loves the symmetry of that.
Kitty says it’s scary because she hasn’t lived alone for a very, very
long time. She’s afraid of being lonely. Nora says if it gets too bad,
she’ll let Kitty borrow Justin.

Paige tells Sarah she’s already promised like 100 times that she’ll
never do it again. Sarah tells her that she’s not the only daughter who
disappointed her mom that night. Paige and Agatha made Sarah a
friendship bracelet, and Sarah loves it.

Scotty and Kevin are bringing Mateo to his grandmother. He hasn’t seen
her since his mom died. She’s very excited that he is coming; she
thought she lost him forever. They hug.

Holly and Justin are talking about how much he loves Rebecca. He tells
her all the good things he remembers about her. Holly likes hearing
about Rebecca from Justin.
