Paige interrupts Kevin with a question. She shows him her bag of
flour/pretend baby. It's a boy, they picked genders out of a hat. He has
a full name, and he's from Paraguay since Paige was in the Peace Corps
when she got pregnant. He's providing day care until he brings Joaquin
over to Sarah's to pick up where he leaves off. He needs to journal when
the baby is fed, diapered - everything. Very important. Paige runs to
catch her bus.
Rose wakes Tommy up with kisses. She wants some quiet time before he
heads out the door. They get started, when Nora interrupts. The alarm
was set to radio instead of buzzer. Nora shares about a woman whose
fantasy was to run in a nude marathon. Nora is joined by a Dr. Milton,
who believe people should act on their fantasies. Dr. Milton is from the
UK. They take calls, and the first one is from a man named Joe. He's
been thinking about looking up an old girlfriend.
Kevin brings Joaquin to Sarah. He stuffed little tissues in the hoody
sleeves so the baby could have arms. Sarah thinks Paige is way too
invested in this project. What good is a fake baby if it doesn't pee,
poop, vomit, and scream? Kevin turns on the radio, telling Sarah Nora's
been hearing from a lot of pervs this morning. Sarah flips around when
she hears Joe's voice. That's not Joe. That's Brody. And Sarah is the
"little birdy" that told him Nora talks about him all the time.
Tommy arrives carrying baked goods, and Kevin promptly spills the beans.
They tune back into the call and hear Brody sharing enough history for
Nora to realize it's him. Tommy doesn't know his job title, but it's
starting to feel way too much like "referee". He bows out, and Kevin
tries to follow suit. Sarah says no. He's right, Kevin is an innocent
bystander. Nora won't be able to take it out on him.
Back on the air, Joe asks for Nora's opinion. She tells him he's taking
way too much for granted. Sometimes these little birdies? They don't
know what the hell they're talking about. She advises him to slow way
down, and she's practically hysterical by the time she gets done giving
advice.
Kevin arrives at Sarah's, still carting the flour baby. She apologizes
to him for leaving him to take the heat with Nora, but he refuses to
accept it. The phone rings, and she answers by apologizing. Justin tells
her to save it for mom, since she was just on the phone shrieking about
what Sarah said to that Brody guy. Kevin's phone ring, and he coos
greetings to Nora. Sarah promptly whispers her conversation over with
Justin and listens in. Nora wants to know where Sarah is, and Tommy for
that matter. He's not answering his phone, either. Sarah tries to
wrestle the phone away from Kevin so she can hear what Nora is saying.
Nora starts honking because some horrible vehicle of a gas-guzzling
motor home is practically blocking her driveway. While she's talking,
she is frightened by a friendly collie making an appearance in her
window. She sees the Buccaneers bumper sticker while she's yelling at
the owner, and realizes it's Brody. Kevin's eyes go very wide when he
tells Sarah she is SO dead. Brody opens his trailer door and greets
Nora. "Hey, slugger".
As they enter bearing groceries together, Nora gives Brody a cheerful
earful about his unannounced arrival. He tells her it's not like he
climbed her downspout and knocked on her mother's window by accident.
This makes Nora laugh. Now it's Brody's turn to get serious. Where did
Sarah get the idea that Brody is her father? Nora blames the internet.
She also lies about her marriage. She and William had a wonderful
40-year run, without a speck of trouble. He congratulates her since he
couldn't manage ten years between two women. She tells him that's
because his priorities are all wrong. Wow, that didn't take long. Forty
years down the road, and she's till holding that against him.
She tells him not to flatter himself. She is thrilled with how her life
turned out. Brody is happy for her. Nora wants to know if he can say the
same. He tells her his life has had it's share of ups and downs, but
it's not over yet. The collie, Lily, barks to be admitted. Nora says not
for long, she has an appointment.
Justin is taking care of a wounded man who turns out to be a soldier.
He's going to need some stitches. He was jumped by a tree. His knuckles
tell another story.
Tommy is not happy to come home and find Sarah and Rose squabbling about
Brody. He told Sarah he didn't want to get involved, yet here she is at
his house. She tells him things are more complicated than they were
earlier, since Brody is at mom's. Rose reacts with wide-eyed alarm, and
Sarah says she has to go over there now and apologize. Kevin is already
there, scoping out the situation. Before Tommy walks out, Sarah lets him
know that she heard through the grapevine that he's not happy at work.
She figures she probably played a part in that. Tommy fills her in. He
just doesn't know the media business. He doesn't see a place for him
there. He thinks he and Rose should probably just move back to Seattle.
Rose thinks they should talk things through before any hasty decisions
are made.
Sarah tells them that Nora loves having them there. She wants to see
them settle down, maybe a couple of grandchildren - Rose interrupts.
That won't be happening anytime soon. She loves Seattle. Sarah won't
drop it, and Rose takes offense. Tommy yells at both of them. Enough
already. He hasn't made up his mind. He just wants to think about it.
Kevin arrives and falls in love with Lily. He misses having a dog. Ever
since Bingo was hit and killed in a car accident, they were never
allowed another dog. Nora tries to color it as William's heart being
broken, and Kevin yells (because Nora is out of immediate earshot) that
it didn't stop him from getting Holly a toy poodle. Brody asks if Holly
is one of the kids, and Nora claims she was an old maiden aunt whom
William loved very much. Kevin snidely adds "Oh yeah, I'll say." Brody
realizes that that there's more to the story, but Nora denies it. She
also claims Holly is dead.
Nora claims she has an appointment again, and Kevin protests that he
just got there. Brody figures he'll putter around on his motor home
while she's away. As he heads out the door, Kevin announces that he
likes him. Nora doesn't think so. She thinks Kevin just enjoys watching
her squirm. Kevin was a little surprised with the "Saint William"
pretense. Nora says it's none of Brody's business. She doesn't want him
standing around here, judging him. Nora finally admits she doesn't have
an appointment.
That evening Sarah finds Brody making dinner at mom's house. She objects
to his spontaneity in showing up here, but she sure didn't show any
restraint when she dropped in on him in his office. Nora arrives and
Brody steps out so she and Sarah can chat. Turns out Brody came down to
see Nora of his own accord. Paige interrupts, and Sarah lies about what
good care she took of Joaquin. She tells Nora she doesn't know where she
left Joaquin, but she thinks he may be at Tommy's.
Tommy and Kevin are at Scotty's talking about options. He doesn't think
moving back to Seattle is Tommy's only alternative. He should give this
place a chance. Maybe Tommy could go over and allay Nora's fears. She's
already pretty messed up over Brody's presence. He figures he has to go
over tomorrow anyway to return Joaquin. Currently, Joaquin is sleeping
in Tommy's car. Kevin is not amused.
Nora and Brody clean up after dinner. She tries to send leftovers with
him, but he refuses. She compliments his cooking. They chat a bit about
how his life is, now. Baseball is baseball, and he loves the game. They
reminisce, and she lets her guard down a little but it comes back up
when Brody gets too close. He tells her he's going to take the advice
she gave on the radio that morning. He doesn't have an agenda, and he
will respect her boundaries. They shake on it, and say good night.
Nora is sleeping when Brody shows up in her bedroom. Lily is sick, and
she's made herself at home on Nora's bed. She gives Nora a kiss. and
Nora says she can stay. But he can't. He and Lily have never been apart,
so he'll be downstairs on the couch. He says good night again.
Paige comes down in a state of high anxiety. This is not her baby. Sarah
can't tell her where her baby is, because she doesn't actually know.
They'll go pick the baby up after breakfast. Paige reminds her that she
has a soccer tournament in an hour, and Sarah is driving the car pool.
They'll just have to use the stand-in baby until they have time to
reunite Paige with Joaquin. Sarah tries to sell Paige on her white,
all-purpose flour being interchangeable with Joaquin. "FYI, Mom. As if
you CARED. Joaquin is whole wheat."
Justin checks in on the insured man, Zach. He doesn't think he should be
living in a park. He can't have anything from the VA, unless he has a
drug problem. But he doesn't. He's walking away from Justin, who won't
let it go. He rages at him, but Justin doesn't back down.
Tommy talks to Brody about Lily. She's the longest relationship Brody
ever had with a female. Tommy hears him. He is only allowed to talk to
his ex about when or where he can see his daughter. Brody asks if he's
thought about getting a dog, but since they're living at his sister's,
he doesn't know. They need to find a place of their own. That brings him
back to what he does for a living. Tommy doesn't honestly know.
Justin fills Sarah in on Zach. He thinks if he didn't have his family,
he might be in the same boat. Nora gets home and grumbles at Justin. She
knows he's not here to see her. Justin says she should see the motor
home, it's off the hook. Paige asks Nora to fill out Joaquin's baby book
before Paige gets back. Sarah is lusting over the muffin's Brody made,
and Justin has to agree. He's a really good cook. Nora tells them he's
leaving tomorrow.
Paige comes in with Lily and tells Sarah she really wants a dog. Tommy
comes in with Rose and says he has an announcement. Brody excuses
himself so he can feed Lily more rice for her sensitive tummy. Nora
reminds him that dinner is at 7:00. Tommy breaks the news. He's going to
be Brody's baseball team's business manager. The job is located in
Phoenix. The house erupts in pandemonium. That ends when Paige screams.
Joaquin was used to make muffins. She thinks she's going to be sick,
since she ate one. Justin is scared because he doesn't know what the
problem is with the muffins, and he ate four of them. Sarah tells him to
follow Paige, she'll explain.
Nora tries to explain to Tommy why this isn't a good idea. He says it's
not about Brody, but Nora says it is. She stops mid-sentence to tell
Sarah this is all her fault. Sarah return volleys that this is all
Nora's fault, because she lied about her wedding date to hide the fact
that she was 19 and knocked up before she was married. Paige and Justin
chose that moment to come back in. Paige says "Grandma, you got
pregnant?" and her face falls when Nora tries to explain. She runs from
the room with Sarah on her heels.
Nora tries to talk sense into Tommy but he won't listen so she exclaims
"Oh, GOD I can't let him do this again." She storms outside to confront
Brody but he's frantic. He needs Nora to drive them to the vet. He can't
wake Lily up. He thinks she's dying.
Tommy tries to explain to Rose. She wants him to be happy, but she
doesn't know what he wants. He wants her to come with him, but not if
she thinks it's a mistake. If she does that, they'll both be unhappy.
She says she'll try. He says she should do what she wants to. She
shouldn't do it for him. They say I love yous.
Justin joins Zach in the park. He says he's having a flashback, so Zach
should indulge him. If Zach can't figure out a way for Justin to help
him, then he's home for the duration.
Brody gets good news. Lily had a tumor on her spleen, but they removed
both the tumor and her spleen. Dogs can get along fine without their
spleens. Nora is very relieved, but Brody tells her she should go. He's
going to stay, and wait for her to wake up. Nora wants to wait with him.
Brody tells her he didn't cook up anything for Tommy's benefit. That
team really does need a good business manager. Nora says she just wants
him to be happy, he's been through so much. Brody says Tommy is a really
good guy, she did a great job with him. Nora can't figure out why he
keeps leaving, then. Brody says some of us just can't stay put.
Nora asks why he's here, and he tells her that when Sarah introduced
herself as Nora Walker's daughter, for a split-second he was afraid that
she was there to tell him that Nora had died. That moment brought home
all his regrets. All the times he meant to look her up, and didn't. He
realized he still had a chance.
Nora is surprised to hear Brody has regrets. His baseball career didn't
turn out as he'd hoped. But if he'd given up that dream and gotten
married, he would have made Nora's life miserable. He's happy Nora got
everything she ever wanted. She says yes. She got the family she wanted.
But William was not a good husband. Brody was right. He was a cheater.
William had multiple affairs including a long-term mistress. He lied,
and embezzled and hurt a lot of people, including Nora. She didn't tell
him because she didn't want him to know that she had regrets. Brody nods
and says "I never liked him." Nora laughs and says she knows. No two
people could have been more different than Brody and William. Brody
points out that now that William is dead, he likes his chances better.
Nora slides to the next chair over and says he's the same guy he was
before. He's just passing through, looking for the next game. Nora is
not the same little girl. Brody says sure she is! She's just older and
wiser. He's only managed half of that. But he's working on it. He helps
himself to her coffee and hands the cup back.
Nora explains how different things were, back when she got pregnant with
Sarah. Paige wonders if Nora wishes she'd used birth control. Nora finds
it hard to answer, because by not using birth control, she gave birth to
Sarah, and she loves Sarah very much. Paige says not to worry. She's not
even going to start her family until she's finished graduate school. She
excuses herself to finish her homework.
Tommy, Kevin and Justin are chatting about nothing specific, when Tommy
mentions nobody wanting anything to do with the muffins when they found
out the main ingredient was powdered Joaquin. Kevin promptly chokes on
his muffin. As Tommy and Kevin are heading out, Zach arrives. Justin
welcomes him and says he's just in time for breakfast.
Nora takes a look at the motor home, it's lovely. She and Brody say good
bye. She offers her hand to shake, and he takes it.
Sarah arrives at Nora's and notices it's so quiet with Brody gone. He's
kind of larger-than-life. Sarah brought her an apology bottle of wine.
Where did Nora and Brody leave their relationship? She said what
relationship? That's the thing about Brody. You never know when you're
going to see him again. The phone rings, and it's Brody. He wants to
know if they have tuna fish. She says yeah, sure and heads for the
pantry. It's for Lily. She's having bed rest at Nora's. Sarah teases her
about keeping his dog and claiming she has no idea when she'll ever see
him again. Nora tells her to shut up and open the tuna.
