Buffy is instructing Dawn on how to deal with creatures of the Hellmouth, as she’s about to attend her first day of Sunnydale High School, rebuilt on the very same ground the Scoobies attended years earlier. Buffy soon finds her fears justified as the manifested spirits of three individuals haunt the new school.
Meanwhile, Willow is in England being rehabilitated by Giles.
Buffy gets a premonition, warning: “From beneath you, it devours.” When Xander happens upon a woman whose dog was eaten by a giant, worm-like demon, Buffy is surprised when a suddenly sane and composed Spike offers to help.
Willow returns to Sunnydale, but can’t find Buffy, Xander, and Dawn. Meanwhile, Buffy, Xander, and Dawn await Willow’s return, but she never shows up. They fear the worst when a dead body is found flayed.
In Buffy’s first week as the school’s guidance counsellor, she encounters a student who believes she is going to die this Friday. When Buffy believes she’s precognitive, the Scoobies try to find out what maybe the cause and how to prevent it.
Anya finally gets back to her legendary vengeance ways by killing a room full of frat boys. While Willow and Xander try to reach out to help her, Buffy takes it as her duty to slay Anya.

Dawn falls in love with football player R.J., becoming totally obsessed. When Buffy tries to control the situation, she finds herself falling for R.J. as well. And the Summers aren’t the only girls that seem to be falling for the jock at first sight.
On the night of November 12, 2002, some of the Scoobies are visited by various different incarnations of the dead:
•Buffy is psychoanalysed by a vampire.
•Willow is given a message from Tara.
•Dawn believes her mother is trying to communicate to her.
•At the urging of Warren, Andrew has Jonathan help him unearth something unholy in the school basement.
Buffy has intense concern that Spike has begun killing, despite his chip. As she keeps tabs on him to find out, Spike begins recovering memories that lead him to doubt his innocence.
Buffy watches over Spike to try and figure out what’s been manipulating him to kill and for what reason. Meanwhile, Andrew is discovered to be back in town and Xander and Anya interrogate him to find out why.
Giles arrives with three potential Slayers to inform the Scoobies of the First Evil’s plan to eliminate the Slayer line. Buffy soon discovers a more immediate threat when she finds that the First has raised a powerful and ancient vampire, the Turok-Han.
As more potentials are gathered, Buffy hopes to get Spike back, but must first find a way of getting past the ubervamp.
Meanwhile, Anya and Giles seek out information on how to defeat the First Evil.
As Buffy begins training the potentials, Dawn finds herself cast to the side. However, she tries to prove herself when she finds she is the target of a spell of Willow’s used to locate a potential in Sunnydale.
Giles takes the potentials on a vision quest, except for Kennedy who fakes being sick so as to spend some time with Willow. However, their date comes to an abrupt end when Willow finds herself appearing as Warren.
Meanwhile, Spike’s chip has begun malfunctioning, leading he and Buffy to revisit the Initiative for answers. The remainder of the Scoobies get a phone call that causes them to ponder if Giles has been assumed by the First.
When Principal Wood invites Buffy to dinner, she accepts for the opportunity to better assess who he is and which side he’s fighting on. Coincidently, Xander meets a girl who he asks on a date for that same night.
Meanwhile, the First reaches out to Andrew to carry out another evil task.
With the First cutting deeper into the Scoobies’ army, Buffy gets fed up. After receiving from Wood a bag passed down to Slayers, Buffy reaches in for answers, but is instead made an offer.
With the high school experiencing a steady increase in violent and supernatural activity, Buffy and Wood figure out its connection to the Hellmouth seal. While Andrew is busy narrating and weaving stories, he must reveal the events that led him to the seal in the first place.
To discover the source of the trigger the First has been using on him, Spike recovers repressed memories of his vampiric relationship with his mother. While Giles continues to voice concern over the removal of Spike’s chip, Wood takes the opportunity for his help in taking revenge against what they both see as a threat.
Willow returns from L.A. with Faith in tow. Their arrival coincides with the surfacing of a powerful ally to the First.
While combing for clues about Caleb, Spike is sent with Andrew to investigate a lead. Buffy believes he and the First are distracting them from something else, but following the defeat at the hands of Caleb, everyone begins to question her leadership.
Cast out from the others, Buffy is left to wonder before Spike returns to reassure her. Back at the Summers home, the others finally coalesce to form a plan of attack against the First’s forces.
Having taken from Caleb a powerful, yet unknown weapon, Buffy reunites with the others to help discover the origin and power of the scythe. Rejuvenated by Buffy’s return, yet devastated by Faith’s failed plan, everyone preps for the upcoming battle that is almost here.
Discovering the source of the scythe, and having been given an amulet by Angel, Buffy devises a plan to defeat the First. Not only could it foil it’s plot, but could forever change the very destiny of the Slayer.
