Buffy begins her life as a college student, but soon finds herself overwhelmed by her new environment. Even her Slayer duties are too much when a group of vampires working the campus humiliate her into defeat.

Buffy's roommate Kathy is wearing on her nerves. However, the Scoobies attribute her change in attitude toward a demon encounter. A subsequent series of strange dreams lead to the possibility that Buffy has become possessed.

Buffy accepts a date with Parker and it doesn't take long for things to progress. However, her ideal return to dating doesn't hold up well soon after. To make things worse for Buffy, Spike has returned to town on the hunt for a legendary vampiric artefact, having also begun dating anew. Meanwhile, Anya has also returned to Sunnydale to examine the nature of she and Xander's relationship.

Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Oz visit a haunted house on campus for Halloween. Not only is the house truly haunted, but they soon find themselves trapped inside with each of their own fears manifesting into reality.

Still wounded from Parker's one-night stand, Buffy seeks solace from the company of four intellectual students who frequent the pub Xander has begun working in. Joining them in beer, Buffy soon drowns her sorrows, but finds herself in a devolved state while her new drinking buddies are thrown back even further down the evolutionary scale. In the meantime, Willow, noticing Oz's fixation on a female singer, decides to confront Parker.

A group of demons arrive in town and usher with them a blanket of silence from everyone in Sunnydale, becoming a troublesome obstacle as the Scoobies' struggle to develop and maintain their relationships. The inability for anyone to communicate becomes even more harrowing as the demons begin collecting human hearts.

Still dealing with each other's secret identities, Buffy and Riley group their respective resources to combat a set of demons gathering ingredients to bring on an apocalypse.

On Buffy's 19th birthday, Giles discovers how out of the loop he is. His dour mood shifts into a race against time when Ethan Rayne turns him into a demon. Unaware of his transformation, Buffy and Riley try to track him down while Giles tries not to disappear into the demon and reaches out to an unlikely ally to keep from being slain.

Buffy is introduced to the Initiative, which preoccupies her from her friends, leading Willow to begin spending more time with Tara. Buffy's introduction into the Initiative is not given a warm welcome by all with Professor Walsh seeing the Slayer as a threat.
Meanwhile, Spike is desperate to be rid of a tracer.

In the wake of Walsh's murder, cracks begin showing in Riley's worldview. Buffy and the Initiative scramble to find the demon responsible, unaware that the true murderer is the first step in a secret project Walsh herself was brewing up.
The Scoobies' hunt for Adam takes a hiccup when Faith wakes up from her coma. Reeling from the pain of her loss and Buffy's fast ability to move on, Faith is eager for vengeance. Meanwhile, when news of Faith's escape gets out, the Watchers Council sends out a special team to retrieve the rogue Slayer.
Having swapped bodies with Buffy, Faith sets out to cause mischief and bask in the spoils of being a good girl.
In the meantime, Buffy, trapped in Faith's body, tries to escape custody of the Watchers Council, as Adam begins gaining followers.
Jonathan is a superstar and renaissance man. A genius, uber-talented, and all around celebrity, there is nothing that Jonathan can fail at. However, a series of attacks by a demon has Buffy beginning to think that there is something amiss about he and his abilities.

Having patched up their rough spot, Buffy and Riley begin spending a good deal of intimate time together. Unbeknownst to them, their sexual activity in the fraternity house unleashes paranormal powers that is linked to its past.

Oz surprises Willow when he returns to Sunnydale, having controlled his werewolf nature. Assuming their relationship can pick up where they left it, Oz is unaware of Willow's relationship with Tara.
Riley's black-and-white vision of the world is further blurred, putting him in a compromising situation.
Adam approaches Spike to help him in exchange for removing his chip.
Spike initiates Adam's plan of isolating Buffy from her friends by planting the seeds of separation that has been brewing over the year.
Buffy's visit to L.A. worries Riley, especially when he learns about Angel's curse.
Adam reveals to Riley the plan Walsh had for the both of them. The last step involves Buffy, but Spike's plan backfires, leading the Slayer with friends in tow to break into the Initiative to stop Adam.
Weary from the enjoining spell they cast, Buffy, Xander, Willow, and Giles fall asleep in the Summers living room. Each are then plagued with strange dreams that peaks into their psyche, as well as their windows into their past and even future.
However, each find themselves being chased down by the primeval embodiment of the first Slayer.
