This episode introduces us to another supernatural experience in the Buffyverse: Witches.
Young Amy Madison has been doing wrong, or so it seems...but it's actually her witchcraft-bound mother, in Amy's body, trying to relive her glory days as a cheerleader. Catherine Madison, mother to Amy (posing as Amy), will do anything to freshen her ranks as a cheerleader, including casting spells on the competition.
This episode is interesting because it taps into dark magic, and shows the dangers of it, which as the series progress, so do the actions of dark magic. it introduces us to the witchcraft theme, and allows us to see into another obstacle in the Buffyverse.
